Actually, the tripods screw goes into the base of the grip.JOHN R : yes it does and works perfectlyBRAD R : The Piston grip, I imagine you are asking about the "handle" part above the ball head that is at the base? You really give no reference as to what you mean by "ball head". So I am just assuming you mean the part under the Piston Grip, and it's the Ball Head that screws into the tripod. The piston grip can then be rotated when you squeeze the trigger. The top part of the Piston Grip has a "Quick Release" attachment that hooks to the camera. Shopper : Will this head fit my sunpak tripod ?DOUG T : Only if it takes a 3/8 inch nut; that's how I measured it. Go to Lowes and ask for a 3/8 nut and see if it fits your existing tripod. If not then that answers your question.JACK M : Yes, BUT, one needs a 1/4' TO 3/8" adapter or adapter screw bushings. I purchased an adapter plate unit with a larger base that fit the Dolica base better. The Dolica has a 3/8" receptacle and the sunpak has a1/4" male screw mount.

Awkard to use on the camera

I like the flexibility of the mount, BUT the base that fits under the camera stick out at 90 degrees from the camera. Since I leave this on most of the time it is a nuisance.

More then I thought

I use the pistol grip when I was out shooting birds and butterflies. It was awesome. I used a Nikon 200-500 lens on it and it was quick and easy movement. when you squeeze the handle you follow the subject and then release the lens locks in. you will have a little bounce with big lens but it stop quickly.it will add up to 6 inches on your tri pod or mono pod.

Works Great!

Purchased this one after a less expensive one failed me completely. This one is sturdy and appears to be durable. Great choice for under ($)

Good, but not perfect

I've only used it a handful of times now, but overall I'm pleased. My complaints are that mine didn't come with the allen wrench needed to loosen and tighten the ball head, so I had to go out and buy one the first day when it loosened up too much after a few hours of use. Just make sure you have one on hand when you're out using the grip
