This may be one of the best tutorial DVDs on the market for using off camera flash. David's teaching method is easy to understand and entertaining. He walks you through many different lighting setups, discussing each one while he's shooting them and gives a brief conclusion with lighting diagrams (sketches) at the end of each session. This set of DVDs are absolutely worth every penney!

This is close to having Hobby at your shoulder while on a shoot. It would difficult to watch this end to end, but when dealing with a particular problem Hobby explains all his considerations and is an excellent teacher.

I've been following David Hobby's Strobist Blog for quite a while now and it is no exaggeration, and I told him so when I met him on The Flashbus Tour, that what I've learned from him has changed my life! These videos reinforce his blog lessons and I simply can't say enough good about the material in it and his approach.

Worth every penny. This is a great resource by the well known Strobist blogger Dave Hobby. This vid makes it clear that he takes his craft seriously and that he's a good teacher. You're essentially a fly-on-the wall as he does photo-shoots but he knows you're there and explaines everything he's doing and why he's doing it. If you're a novice, your knowledge will jump exponentially; and I believe even a seasoned pro would learn from this vid. Don't let the slightly high price put you off, this video is full of info, its fun, and it's informative.

If you are just starting out with flashes, this is a good buy. Information is repeated a lot, so everybody should be able to follow. But then again - information is repeated A LOT. You can't please everybody, but he tries. That comes across as though this guy loves the sound of his own voice, and want's us all to know that he is really skilled, which makes him seem amateuristic. If you are good and skilled, the pictures will tell the story. Don't start explaining to me why your technique is good. All in all this is a let down. I think his pictures has improved since the older strobist site images, so that's good. But i only liked about 20 minutes of this 7 hour series (we see David throwing a dart with fishing line a couple of times?? Why?? Can't you just say - i used a dart with a fishingline to get this line over that lamp??)

The approach David takes and the techniques he teaches resonate with me in a way that it is not an exaggeration to say that he has changed my life. My goal in this digital world is to make my work stand out in the crown and I am making progress toward that goal every day using what I've learned from David in this series, on his STROBIST blog and in person on the FlashBus Tour.

Have been listening to #7 DVD on my tablet ALL the time!!!! David's authenticity about his messages comes thru and it is such a welcoming "flavor" in the new wave of acquiring info then tranforming that to useful knowledge to create my own images vs. Coping others! Bravo!

Great example of speedlight use in manual mode and as counterpoint to Joe McNally's 'Language of Light'

David Hobby is very knowledgeable and I trust his experience. I am always on his site, and have bought several SB-28 and Lumopros. The DVD was great when he was actually photographing people. But it was difficult to listen to when he was just sitting in the classroom talking. Also he answered questions that I was unable to hear on the video. I had to play those parts over and over again. Sorry maybe its my ADD. His gear review was also awesome.

Outstanding! David Hobby has long been a great educator but now he has outdone himself. Not only do you get to see how he sets up the lighting for the various shoots but how he works with the subjects to get the shot he wants. And how he solves the problems that inevitably come up. The BIG bonus is that he spends a lot of time discussing the business side of things and his current business model. Worth every penny!!

Strobist Lighting in Layers DVD Review

This set of DVDs are absolutely worth every penney!
Photographer David Hobby of Strobist.com follows up his Lighting Seminar DVD Set (May 2008) with Lighting in Layers, a series of real-world, behind-the-scenes assignments lit entirely with small flashes.
The 7-DVD, 9-hour boxed set includes six extended, detailed location shoots, paired with related lighting diagrams, which include walk-throughs and immersive discussions.
In addition, there is a running set of discussions on other topics. Those include finding your compass point as a photographer, gaining access to the people and things you want to photograph, adding value to your community and building a sustainable business model in the age of the web.
As a 20-year staff newspaper photojournalist -- and more recently, a widely-read blogger at Strobist -- Hobby also explains in detail how he combines those skills to create a unique ecosystem in which he can thrive as a self-directed photographer
The first six DVDs are standard discs which are meant to play in any standard DVD player. The seventh disc is a DVD-ROM which contains compressed files of all of the content from the first six discs. They are formatted be dragged (in whole or part) to a portable media player such as an iPod touch or iPhone or Android devices via iTunes or other similar software. The portable media files are formatted as h.264, for minimum size and maximum compatibility with other portable devices, such as Android phones.
