Questions & Answers

Diana A : Will this ring flash fit with my 580ex ii and canon 7d? I do not see the 7d listed in the title.THOMAS G : The Canon 580 EX attached to a Canon 7D will fit the RAC-170 model ring flash. The Canon 7D with 580EX-II flash requires the RAC-170-2 (per the manufacturer's web site).Andrew F : It's not just an issue if it fits the flash. The ring flash has to be the right size to fit the flash and the lensAndrew F : I don't believe so. If the camera has a different body shape then the 5D, it won't fit because the ring flash isn't adjustable, so its fitted to the specific camera body and flash comboTIMOTHY F : I put it on the 580EX. It fit great, I don't know if they are the same size.
Shopper : I have both the Canon D5 and the Canon T3i, will this flash ring work with both or just the D5? Thank you CesarTHOMAS G : Contact the manufacturer or check the manufacturer's web site for compatibility information. For the same flash unit, the compatibility is solely based on the distance between the hotshoe connection (measured at the plane where the flash slides into the shoe) and the center of the lens mount. If you change from one model flash to another, e.g. Canon 580 EX and 580 EX-II, the distance from the center axis of the flash output to the center axis of the lens port is different and thus changes the distance the ring is aligned to the center axis of the lens port. Therefore, there usually will be an incompatibility issue using the ring flash adapter on different flash models. So, always consider the same ring flash adapter and flash unit when determining if 2 models of the same brand camera will be compatible. The web site information of Ray ring flash adapter should answer this question.Andrew F : I believe with just the 5D. The reason is that the ring flash mounts directly on the Canon 580ex when the flash is attached to the Camera's hotshoe. There is no way to adjust the length on the ringflash, so only cameras which have approximately the same distance from the mounted flash to the lens will be compatible.TIMOTHY F : It should work for both, if you are putting it on the 580EX flash.RICHARD D : Unsure. I used it on the 5D. I do know it would not work on my 7D.

Good but with some limitations

The ray flash is great as a fill flash device indoors and out and it does deliver on the ring flash look without sacrificing too much output. There are a couple major issues I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere: 1. Red Eye can be a problem, the ring blocks the red eye reduction and it isn't wide enough of a diffuser to eliminate red eye in some situations, especially low light for light eye colors. 2. AF: Again in low light the camera will struggle to focus because the ring flash blocks the infrared focus assist. I use the ray flash on the 580EX2 with the 5d Mark 2 and the 7d.

Pleasing Soft Images

Great device for portraits - soft shadowless images when you have to use direct on camera flash, better than bounces and diffused devices to soften the harshness of the flash. Reasonably process, not too bulky to use. Seems to be well engineered for the purposes it was intended. Easy access to vital camera and lens controls.

I have used it for over a year

For on camera flash it is better than any other device that I have used in 40 years as a photographer. I think I have tried them all at some point. The light is diffused well and the catchlight is great. Have shot portraits, weddings and even some macro work with excellent results in every one. I also should mention that it also works on the Sigma DG 500 Super that is my backup flash on my backup 5D camera. Even though it isn't listed as working on it. I just wish I hadn't bought it when it was [$] but then I wouldn't have gotten those great shots last year.

cool gadget but not too durable

Just got the product today and it broke on the first testing. there is a locking device on the thing but it is not marked which way is locked and off. when I thought i had it unlocked and tried pulling the flash unit out the thing came apart. I will have to use some black gorrilla duct tape to hold it together and I haven't even got a shot off with it yet. Pretty disapointing in that respect. It does seem like a great little gadget though, but expected a little more durability from such a pricey thing.

cheap and nice option

It is a nice option if you do not have the enough money to buy a pro ringflash. The problem came when you make a vertical shot, the effect it is diferent to a real ringflash, it make you a deep shadow when you have a long distance between a wall. It is amazing in the snapshots, or something casual, it seems like a 40´s paparatzzi shot. I recomend this product for the people who want lightweight in his back and a cool experience with a little money invertion.

It is OK, but not fantistic

I tested a few shots immediately right after I received it. The light is certainly softer than direct flash from 580EX. For close up shots, I still get best results by bouncing the light from 580EX. I think the ring size could still be bigger. As it is, the light source direction is still too closed to the camera lens. This ring light is best probably for portrait as an additional fill-in light.

The Ray Flash is a unique adapter for your hot-shoe flash unit designed to replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The Ray Flash is portable and lightweight, and has been designed to take advantage of a camera's TTL metering capabilities. Because the Ray Flash relieson the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables.

The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens.

The Ray Flash creates a unique ring flash lighting effect: a three-dimensional shadow-wrapped look around the subject. Because ring flash light originates from a circle around the lens, it produces a virtually shadowless look on the front of your subject, while producing a soft even shadow around the edges. The versatile Ray Flash is ideally suited for fashion, wedding, portrait, journalistand macro photography as either a main or fill-in light.

Exposure control:
All TTL functions operate normally when using the Ray Flash. As with standard flash use, manual exposure control requires the use of a light meter or test-shots.

The Ray Flash is designed to fit the Canon 580EX (MKI & MKII) and Nikon SB800 and SB900 flash units. Weighing about 16 oz, the Ray Flash is lightweight and is easily supported by hot-shoe mounted flash units. The 4 1/8" internal diameter of the Ray Flash is large enough to accept almost all professional lenses from Nikon & Canon.

Light output:
The Ray Flash results in only one stop of light loss from your flash's standard output. The Ray Flash does not change a flash's color temperature.

How to fit the Ring Flash Adapter:
Mount the Ray Flash to the front of a portable flash unit by sliding the Ray Flash over the front of the flash unit. Then turn the lock on top of the Ray Flash to hold the Ray Flash firmly in place. The Ray Flash requires no modifications to your flash unit to mount.
