Great Ring Light

I have owned this light since it was first released. It provides beautiful flat lighting. I use it on my Kowa Super 66 with a 110mm macro lens. This unit is sturdy enough for me and easy to use. The lighting is totally predictable. I'm a happy camper.

Not for heavy use

Purchased this light and when it arrived found it to be very light weight plastic, almost toy like. Not for heavy usage and lightwill flash whil ein your hand and in the off position. I will say the lights are extremely bright. This light is note worth the listed price. More of a under 100 dollars type pruchase

Nice for Macro

Outstanding for macro photography. Can be left on for fill lighting as well. It's not flimsy but due to it's light weight design you need to take care of it.

An awkward ring light

By

from Fremont, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this ring light thinking it would be a versatile light for my macro photography. Though it reads like it's compatible with every camera, I couldn't use the hot shoe on my Sony a55 with this light so had to use the light on always. Good output but batteries run down fast. Another quirk is the mounting ring. It turns independent of the lighting unit and after attaching it to my lens (which took a bit to do, the lens also had a UV filter attached) I couldnt remove the ring light from the filter and barely got it off my lens. The UV filter is still attached and short of breaking the glass, I'm hoping a filter wrench (on order) will do the trick. For the price, if I had paid not too much more, I could of had a macro ring light by Sigma or Canon that would have fit great and would work with my camera's flash system.

Very useful for hand held macro work.

By

from Boston, MA  -  Semi-Professional

I use this hand held to document modifications and documentation errors on computer equipment. The continuous mode provide enough illumination to focus in tight spaces and stop down to f8 or f11. For this kind of work it is much quicker and easier to use than a ring flash. Note: The other equipment used is Nikon D3, 105VR Macro, and sometimes a Kenko AF 12mm extension tube. Annoyances; 1. The flash rotates freely on its adapter ring. This means that the battery compartment is always down. I often have to hold it to the side to get clearance. I'm sure that I could fix this by cutting down a bayonet lens hood and gluing it to the flash. 2. The battery compartment gets warm with extended use. Not enough to melt, but probably enough to age the plastic faster than normal.
