Does what it promises

I bought this so I could use my SB-600 with my tele lenses while photographing birds in poor lighting. It is very consistent when used with my 300mm, with or without a tele converter. The normal issues with using a flash applies, of course, but this product definitely does what it promises. With my 80-400mm zoom it is a less predictable, and even though results can be good at any focal length, it is completely hit-and-miss. Not worth the price.

Poorly constructed and over-rated. I prefer to use a strong flash.

Light weight, works well

By

from Los gatos, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Really helpful when using long lenses for wildlife/bird photography. Adds that little sparkle or catchlight when lighting isn't optimal.

very good for specific purposes

use it with the sb-600 set at 1/16 power to freeze the wings of hummingbirds. Could probably used for other small birds.

Gets the light to the subject

By

from Ft. Thomas, KY  -  Photo Enthusiast

Positives: 1) Gets the light to the subject in the 400-500mm range, 2) works best with flash controls set to manual, 3) light weight on camera flash head, 4) packs easily 5)protective case for fresnal screen. Negative: 1) somewhat flimsy on the flash head - hard to avoid becasue of design that makes it light weight and packable. Better used on a tripod than handheld. I have used it with good results on wildlife at night and during day with wildlife in shadows.

An important device for bird photos

By

from Green Valley, AZ  -  Pro Photographer

For bird/animal photos this fills in shadows from a distance. It can also be used for distant photos at weddings.

Better Beamer Results

By

from Aiken SC  -  Photo Enthusiast

Functionally it works great. It enables much faster shutter speeds, with smaller apertures, at greater distances. The result is sharper photographs. My best example is a photograph of the preacher holding a Bible facing the congregation. The photograph was taken hand held from the very back of the church with the pastor hand holding the Bible and moving it for the congregation to see it. The photograph is so sharp that you can almost read the text. I used a Nikon D80 with an 18-200 zoom lens (resulting in effectively 300 mm) at max zoom and an SB 800 flash. I like the way it disassembles to store in my camera bag. However, the Velcro attachment system to the flash, while it works, is not very elegant. This is sthe difficult to use part.

Must have item

By

from Clover, SC  -  Photo Enthusiast

This thing work great! With my Nikon D-90 (with 630mm lens) and Nikon SB-600 flash it is perfect. The range is fantastic. The TTL of the camera/flash work automatic. Truly lights up the subject. Must have for nature photography. For the price you cann't go wrong.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
DAVID L  I was headed for Africa and felt it would help in night game drives. It worked well and did extend the light for the night shots of animals. It's meant for long focal lengths (I used it on an 80-400) and of course you would not use it when an animal is only a few yards away. You have to position it carefully and aim it, but with a digital, you can confirm the accuracy of your aim pretty quickly and then adjust as needed.
Shopper  I have the SB900, will this work with that?
Helen O  For the SB-900 you will need the FX-6 model. The FX-6 can be found here: http://www.adorama.com/KIRFX6.html
Shopper  How about the SB 700 Nikon flash?
BENNETT F  The FX-3 fits the SB700.
