I use multiple Nikon SB 800's and 900's in lieu of bigger monobloc lights when shooting portraits. Typical set up is one medium softbox, and one umbrella or two umbrellas as main and secondary lights. I use a Speedlight equipped with the Honl Grid on a boom set a few feet above and slightly behind the head of my subject. The grid permits me to carefully place a hair light to bring out highlights in my subject and add depth as well. My Speedlights allow great portability and, as importantly, quality. The Honl Grid is really useful for managing one of the important lights in my set up. Highly recommended.

Use to create a natural vignette on the person or on the background.

I use these on my SB-800's and I really like them. It is very sturdy and looks nice. Clients seem to have more confidence when you do not pull out a home-made honeycomb grid.

This grid spot is very well made, but it is a little on the expensive side. You can make your own with some black drink straws, but this is very nicely made. The only down side is that it is a bit of a challenge to attach to the strobe. I use Nikon SB-800s and it attaches with Velcro (hook and loop) and it works, but it seems like there could be a better mounting system. The Velcro that wraps around your speedlight is not included, so you'll need to order that separately.

Used the grid to control light stand mounted SB-800, using strobist techniques. Produced some great controlled light placement.
