She's no "M" but work as hard as it does

If you don't have one of these units, sorry! It's discountinued. However, the bonus is it comes in an updated "M" package. Which is great for the location photographers out there! I own both models (620A(2) & (1)620M). I am pleased to report back to you all they work (very well). Profoto they are not! But, you're allowed to keep possession of your limbs and child(ren) after purchasing these strobes. Besides, does your camera care whether it captures Elinchrome, Profoto or Flashpoint? Nope, just feed it light and it will still respest you in the morning! The Flashpoints are rugged, easy to use, affordable, reliable, have a great selection of accessories and most important to me accurate color output/reproduction. As stated above, I own three (3) of these strobes and will be purchasing a 1220A (600WS) and 1820A (900WS) units soon. Get the "M" model today and spead light (should that be "love"? However,do both!) all over the world.

Another gem

I have 2 of these units and they work fantastic! I use them both in studio and on location and they produce excellent results everytime!I'm not very gentle with my equipment and these have taken a beating and still take more abuse! I have had one under dripping water and one fell thanks to a gust of wind and an umbrella to fall about 6 feet. Broke the handle on the back but the light still works!!All in all I'm surprised at how well this light has held up for the price. [...]

Tough and versatile

Been holding up for 2 yrs shooting 1000 portraits/wk. Recycles quickly, but sometimes starts beeping. What does this mean? Turn it off and next day it works fine? Modeling light needs to be unscrewed everytime you pack up, a pain. Especially when it is hot! But I'd buy it again, great value.

PRO

The only thing I dont like about this strobe is the slave sensor. It simply wont work with the umbrella attached, and the modeling light is on! This is my first monolight so I cant fairly compare it to others, but, So far I am very pleased with its performance.

very practical for begginer

I've had this light going on a month and put it through roughly 100+ flashes. everything works as advertised. Seems very bright for indoor portraiture. Only flaw is before i recieved my RF-602 wireless triggers, i used the optical sensor which is very sensitive. so much so that it picks up the light from the modeling lamp and cant pick up the command flash. everytime i used the modeling lamp higher than roughly 1/8 power it wouldn't fire. till i placed my hand between the sensor and the light head. work 100%. to remedy this i used a thin strip of electrical tape on the side the faces the light or umbrella (if used) and works flawlessly now. so far i have developed alot of faith and cant wait for more reasons to use this monolight!

Great bang for the buck

I bought two of these to supplement my Speedatron Force 5 monoblocs. I use one of the Flashpoints for hair/edge light, and the other for background light. They run wonderfully. The fans are very quiet. You have great control over the power of the lights. They are lightweight and easy to set up. I've shot with them for two serious, day-long studio shoots with models. They recycle just as fast as the Speedatrons and I have no problem with quickly firing off many shots in rapid fire succession. Add a set of barndoors to one with color filters and on a white background I instantly have a custom color -- depending upon the power setting of the light that I set. If you want some very inexpensive lights for you home studio you cannot beat these for the price.

Very nice unit

This strobe has performed perfectly in the short time I've used it. The color balance and exposure are very consistent shot to shot and day to day. I've run the unit for several hours at a time and it didn't even get warm let alone over heat.

I would buy this product again

The lights work beautifully although I had a modeling lamp burn out on the first shoot. These lamps are [$] apiece so I'm hoping they will last longer than that one. I also bought the wireless remote triggering system and I find that I do often get misfires, but that is not a fault of the lights.

Monolight

Bought these to do some indoor portraits. They were inexpensive and worked like a charm. Plenty of power and I really like having the modeling light to help set up. I am not using them every day but expect to use them more in the future. If you don't want to have to spent a lot of money this may be a good choice.

great for the price

The kit came with two 620a monolights and they work great for the price I paid. I would rate these lights an 8 out of 10. I bought these to set up a small studio in my house mainly for animal portraits. I recommend buying a third light of equal or lesser power for a hair light[...]

Awesome Buy

Great Buy! Do not hesitate buy these. There are many on the market that are more expensive and have you guessing whether or not they are better. I have shot with more expensive but anything under $2K is pretty much the same. These have a pretty fair amount of light and they go down to 1/16. The accessories are not outrageous. I will be buying another of these.

Solid light at a great price

This is my first monolight. I researched for months and decided on the 620A. This light is fantastic. Very solid feel. Switches, body and connections are solid. The 620a has Auto dump and goes down to 1/16th. These features are not mentioned in the specs. Also it comes with the correct cover to protect the modeling bulb. Optical sensor works perfectly.Recycle time is fast enough. This light should last for many years. I use the 620A with an SB900 and SB600.I plan on buying 2 more 620a's. Flashpoint is coming out with a 21 inch beauty dish and grid that I am waiting for. I would buy this again. You can't beat them for the price. The flashpoint remote trigger works perfectly and fires every time.

Decent Product

The first one I got would not work. The second one works as it should though. The light works as described. Keep in mind this is my first monolight, so I have nothing to compare to. I personaly think that the stand that comes with it is too flimsy. The umbrella is a little dinky too, but works as advertised. My biggest problem with the stand is that it is flimsy, and will not tighten up tight enough to keep the light from rotating. (God forbid you use it outdoors!) Considering price, its decent. Im not going to say wonderful things about it like I did for my new Nikon 70-200 VR

I'm glad I bought this

I did a lot of research B-4 buying my 1st set of strobes. I found a lot of great reviews about these strobes. They are right. This is a great value. I bought the wedding kit, it's is an even better value.

Great strobe for the cash

I use this for both interior portraits and interior architectural work. It performs well, recharges quickly, and gives consistent light color. Sensors are very sensitive and work predictably. Power adjustment is very good allowing very small adjustments to get the effect you are looking for. Accessories attached quickly and securely. I'm very happy with the lights.

Great Value and Good Quality Lighting.

I really like the lights, the quality is very nice and the price is pretty good. The accessories are a little hard to assemble, for example the soft boxes that attach to them can be painful to assemble the first time you do it.

good value

I chose the flashpoints based on value and accesories for the price. So far it has performed well and is very powerful. The proportional modeling light and self-dumping as well as fan cooling are nice features at this price point. I couldn't tell from the photo how an umbrella mounted. The image on the web has the reflector upside down! I'm sukrprised Adorama doesn't correct this. The umbrella slides thru the hole in the reflector and into a clip underneath. A little hard to get in but holds securely once it is. The web site is a bit confusing on accesories, they are hard to find, but I highly recommend the barn doors, snoot and 40 degree grid. The softboxes are another story. The egg-crate grid does not mount on the 24x24 as advertised, though you can modify it with velcroe to make it work. Good flash and accesories for an entry level price. Time will tell how durable they are.

Really, really good!

The 2 light kit is very, very good. I picked up two softboxes along with the kit. I used them at a wedding a few weeks ago and everything worked perfectly! I am using pocket wizards to trigger the lights. The kit is just such a nice setup! Everything fits in the case (not softboxes obviously). I plan to buy more!!

Studio (and field) Strobe

I bought this strobe after having difficulty lighting some squirrelly subjects. This light is almost too much for my tiny studio, but since it is adjustable down to 1/8 power I am finding it useful. When I need fast shutter speeds, I have sufficient light. I have used it in the field only once, in a gym with harsh mercury vapor lights and ugly, cluttered walls. I erected a backdrop and turned up the power on the strobe to blow over the room lights (turning them off was not an option). I used a custom white-balance set in-camera using a gray card, and the color was perfect. I recommend this strobe. It is a great value for the money.

Extremely satisfied

I'm a serious amateur photographer since the late 70's, mostly landscape & nature. Low/moderate experience with portrait / studio shooting with continuous lighting & umbrellas. I've had my eye on these Flashpoints for several years. I decided to help a little to stimulate the economy (not much stimulus since these are so reasonably priced) and finally jumped on those wishes. I regret waiting so long. I love them! I bought the 1220 studio set. I liked them so much I bought a set of the 620's right away. Both are nearly identical in every perceivable respect except for flash output intensity & modeling light wattage. Took them out of the boxes, set them up and all worked perfectly. They are sturdy, have a solid feel and perform extremely well. Recycle time is not even an issue. I enjoy the infinite variability of the flash & modeling light. The entire exterior body especially the entire front attachment assembly is metal and the built-in handle is very nice. The main body's metal housing is thick and doesn't feel cheap, thin or have a "tinny" echo. In fact there's no echo, just that hard metal feel on the knuckles. The matching remote infrared trigger Adorama sells works wonderfully. The flash / slave sensors on the moonlights work flawlessly, never missing a shot. They lived up to my expectations and am delighted. I've read many reviews of troublesome assemblies of softboxes of many different manufactures. I assembled each the accompanying softboxes in under 2 minutes. Easy. COST CONSIDERATION: I considered those units costing many hundreds / thousands more, until one adds up everything. It's not justifiable unless you own a full-time business where they are used daily or you can turn a profit over years / lifetime (or are a wall street banker w/ those great bonuses). In a narrow respect, the flash tubes basically put out the same light as a monolight costing far more, and these have the same features on the back of most of those expensive models. Realistically in the end, one will achieve the identical photographic image from one brand to the next. That's where your skills come in. True, I haven't personally owned the expensive high-end brand name to compare on an extremely intimate level, but I've been around them and others who use them and had limited usage; they really do the same exact thing. If you are even contemplating buying / trying a studio light / set like I was, these are the best value for your money, plus you likely will love them. You really can't go wrong with the 620's or 1220's. I wish I had jumped long ago. My continuous lights will feel neglected from less (or little) use. I felt kinda bad spending the money as I placed the orders, not knowing if I made a smart decision in these troubled financial times. Well, after testing them out, it was worth it and I actually feel good about it (and especially knowing I saved hundreds / thousands the other brands could have cost me).One thing I'd like to see, a variety of honeycombed grid attachments for the units themselves to narrow the light spread for rear subject highlighting.

Works great

By fotographx

I have now two of these lights. I think they are great for what I use them for. I lug them around to take pictures of my family. I guess that just means I'm serious about taking pictures of my family. I'm not really to fond of the idea of having to take the modeling light out so I can put on the safety cover when I transport the lights around. I suppose its a small price to pay. I like the step less power change. I think these lights are very good. I don't expect them to perform like ...
