Questions & Answers

KEVIN H : Do I need 3 batteries for this? One in the body and 2 in the grip?JULIO Q : Nope, you just need 2, the grip will take the place of the battery in the camera body.STEVEN D : Just one, the vertical rise of the grip slides into battery spot of the camera. Two batteries in the grip. The grip will operate camera with only one battery in it while one is charging.MAURICIO S : Only 2 batteries, both on the gripDEREK V : With this grip you can use either 1 or 2 batteries. The slot in they body where you would normaly put the battery is occupied by part of the grip.Herbert L : No just 2 the grip has a shaped piece that fits up into the camera body slot. New Nikon's won't allow u to use 2 aftermarket batteries firmware blocks that u can use 1 after as long as other is a Nikon specific battery. They have to make money camera business is vy hard now with cell phone camera competitionJONATHAN N : No, just one OR two batteries is needed. The grip fills the space where the battery normally goes and it will run with just one or two batteries if desired.ACCOUNTS P : You only need two batteries. Both go in the grip. The grip plugs in the battery openingMARC R : HI! no, you only need two, because the arm of the grip goes where the original battery goes.ROBERT J : No, you only need 2 batteries and they go in the grip. The grip mates to the battery compartment of your camera. You must remove the battery compartment door to insert the grip. BTW, my grip only worked intermittently with my NIKON D5100 and didn't work at all with the D5200.ARMAND R : No, just two batteries in the grip.
WILLIAM P : Do I need to purchase more batteries to go inside this unit and how many do I need ?.DESMOND C : The unit takes 2 batteries. You can use the existing camera battery, so you will have to buy 1 extra battery. I recommend a generic less expensive brand. It is recommended that you install the original battery first as some batteries do not have a recognition chip and you could get a default reading. This is a great unit and with extended battery life you can shoot for a very long time.JAMES W : Yes i did. I would not recommend this product. The door was flimsy and broke. The tripod socket stripped and didn't operate properly. vertical trigger did not fire without perturbing cable attached.BARDIA G : The Flashpoint grip can take up to two batteries. But it will work with just one battery. The unit I purchased did not come with an extra battery.DONNY G : This unit holds 2 batteries. I used my stock battery + one new battery.WILLIAM F : I have 2 for times I'm going to take a lot of still and some video. So far 1-fully charged battery is enough. I just wanted to be sure I always had enough.RAYMOND R : You can use it with 1 battery but it has space for 2, is always good to have a backup battery but so far no problemCHARLES B : This unit is designed to hold two Nikon EN-EL 14 batteries but, I believe, it can work with just a single one. However, I've not tried to do this.Be sure to use two batteries of the same manufacturer. Non-OEM batteries may be less expensive but I've found that you get what you pay for - especially in terms of holding their charge(s)ANTHONY J : No need to have additional batteries, it will work fine with a single battery. It can hold two batteries, though, to extend your shooting time.ROBERT E : it takes two batteries. So, if you have one, you will have to buy another.
ROGER M : will this work with the new D5300?GEORGE P : No, The battery grip for D5100 is MB DIO The flash grip for the D5300 is MB D12 I really think the people work at Adorama would know much more about this than I would. They are great people to deal with. Thanks GRPFRANK U : Don't know. I only own the D5100.JEFF B : I use one on a D5100 and can't speak directly to your question about the D5300, but the battery connections don't send battery life/charge % data to the camera and can cause "battery error" which requires battery removal to reset.DESMOND C : sorry can't help you with that.CHARLES B : Since I do not own the D5300, I cannot answer this question. If Adorama is unable to answer your question, perhaps Nikon can if you inquire whether the Professional Grip you are using with your D5200 will lso work on the D5300.

Okay but not perfect

I wanted a grip for my Nikon D5200 so I can double my video shooting duration from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. It does that job okay. If you want to use the grip for taking portrait pictures using the shutter switch on it, then you will encounter some clumsy situations since that button will not work unless you attach a piece of wire (included) from the side of the camera to the side of the grip. The top of the grip doesn't align perfectly with the base of the camera but this can only be seen when you look very closely. Apart from these, everything works okay.

not up to Nikon standarss.

It will not easily connect, the camera door is in the way. I am just not too impressed, but for the price? I guess it isn't too bad for the rare times I need the extra battery power.

Works well with D5200

Wanted the extended shooting power that a battery pack provides. This unit provides what I was seeking at a very reasonable price. The only minus is that to operate, a short external cable connection between the unit and the camera is required.

Vertical grip

Not to happy with the external cable required to connect to the camera. Cable is too long and gets caught and you can't close the dust cover over the other connecting ports.

Does what it is supposed to do

I bought this grip for the same reason most people buy these grips. Nikon did not make one for my D5100. The extra cable to activate the vertical shutter release was ackward. I just decided not to use it. The door latch is so flemsy that I fear it's going to pop open at any time during a shoot. The tripod socket mount pertrudes so badly that I never get a good grip when I try to mount it on my tripod. I tried another brand but it did not power on at all so I sent it back. This one at least powers on. That's the best thing I could say about it.

Update after two weeks

After two weeks of light use, the grip is basically not functional. The clips that hold the batteries in place are not doing their job. They need to hold the batteries lightly in place and they aren't doing that. The camera will not function with the grip connected. I had hi hopes for this but was let down.

Not Bad at All!

Pretty good value for the price. Everything lined up well and the fit and finish is pretty good. Very light weight. A lot lighter then I would have guessed. Functions well with either one or two batteries. The only function on the grip is the shutter release. It will not control any other camera functions.

Works great; no issues

I was concerned about getting a "knock off" battery grip. I read horrible things; the grip didn't attach well, didn't match construction of the camera, even a report of the wheel you twist to attach the grip to the camera breaking and becoming lodged in the camera base. I still figured I'd give one a try. Figured I could always send it back. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. The grip felt solid and matched my D300. The construction was solid; no loose parts. The fit to the body was snug.

Handy addition

Nice addition to D330s. Do not have to put battery in the original chamber, instead two batteries fit in the holder. Don't have to remove to change battery. Wish there are build-in dial controls like the Nikon original.
