I haven't tried this as a light yet. But out of the box, the mounting mechanism is different that the one shown in the picture. The plastic used for the mount is cheap & seems brittle. The tightening screws are cheap too, & the mount wobbles in my hot shoe. Neither of my Sony batteries stay in the battery holder because they slip out of the latching mechanism. I'll have to use tape to keep them from falling out. Maybe the led light will be worth all the hassles: at least the thing turns on & provides light.

Bright light - lightweight -low cost - easy to use - like the dimmer. Flimsy mount construction = batteries go down quickly - cannot store with batteries - worth what you pay for it - use it regulary

Use is for lightpainting. Works great. Only concern was 6 alkaline batteries went bad after first use. I thought switch was off and it still happened but not sure and don't want to "test" it again with batteries, so I remove them after use.

To provide lighting in low light situations for interviews, parties, weddings...that tyoe of environment. Quick, bright light...uses SONY NPF batteries or 6AA...I like the sony rechargable batteries because i don't have to keep on buying AA batteries. On the down side plastic housing and plastic tighteners which you need to constantly tighten

The light is mostly what I expected at this price point. What I did not expect was the fact that you have to remove the batteries before you put the light away. If you leave the batteries in it the batteries will be dead the next time you try to use the light. Yes, the unit drains batteries even while it is turned off.

I like this a lot. For the price it adds that extra bit of fil light that I need. I film uisng my iTouch mounted on the mCAM which has a 1/4"20 screw thread on top. This light also comes with a 1/4 20" thread. My challenge was to get a connector with 1/4" 20 on both ends to mount this light on top of the mCAM. Luckily I have a husband who is handy. He took a 1/4"20 rod and cut it down in size using a hack saw so that the light fits flush on top of the mCAM. I like this light so much that I might buy another to mount off-camera on a tripod. Another thing I like about this light is that it is dimmable.

The day his arrived in the mail, we immediately pulled it from the packaging, screwed the base into the threaded top of a light stand, put batteries into it, turned it on, and shot a cooking how-to with fantastic results. The unit is very easy to use. It does feel light and cheap, but its lightness allowed us to quickly and easily reposition the light stand as necessary as we moved from stovetop to countertop to table. And the fact that it runs off of internally mounted batteries made mobility even easier. The unit provides good, useable light for about five feet. Beyond that, you really lose a lot. Though the unit feels cheap, I don't have the impression that I will break it by glaring at it, as seemed to be expressed in other reviews. It feels like cheap toy plastic. I ordered two, and it will likely order another couple.

This light is very powerful and provides suprisingly warm light for an LED. That said, it is really poorly built. The battery compartment is poorly designed so that the batteries often come loose from their contacts and the device will not work. Further, when not in use the light still drains power from the batteries, so, if you leave your batteries in, you may come back to a drained set after a couple of hours. Neither problem exists in the more expensive unit I have from another vendor. That said, if you can deal with the annoying construction issues, the light output for the price is hard to beat...

Like any LED light, this won't compete with the sun or light up the night for a large area, but given the price, it does very well. Of special note is its ability to use camcorder batteries, which last longer than rechargeable AA batteries. You could buy 2, 3, or 4 of these and put together a bank of light for a group shot - 3 = 480 LEDs, compare to 500 LED lights and you'll find this is better. Dimming ability is a bonus for exacting control when up close!

You see the CN160 everywhere. They are excellent and very versatile lights, but the 1st generation had a HUGE drawback -- the plastic shoe mount was flimsy and would break off easily, making them instantly virtually useless. This version has an upgraded metal shoe mount, with 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole. I can't express enough what a difference this makes. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some newer 3rd generation versions have shoe mounts on all 4 sides, which lets you bank several together. You can accomplish something similar with a cold shoe extension bar, but it's an extra expense and doesn't let you stack vertically. Still, the 3rd generation are much more expensive, and this one is a great value.

I use this product for music videos on location and it works well in low light situations. In studio when I have a controlled lighting, I may sometime still have this on camera to help with shadows. I did not think this little unit would help me much but I find myself using all the time.

This was a great alternative to a more expensive name brand light. For a lot less money, the salesman recommended this and I was very happy with the results. It throws a little extra light on your subject which helps a ton in low light situations.

I use it mostly off camera as a hand held to light things that are close. Eats batteries even when off, so I remove batteries when not in use. Works fine for how I use it.

Battery compartment does not hold batteries. They just fall right out and when they are in, they don't make contact correctly. I am going to have to rig up a transformer and use this off the camera. Not worth the money.

Good bright LED light. The color is on the cool side, as it's LED, but I have only used the included translucent colorless filter, not either of the other filters included. Metal screw threads means it should hold out well, unlike some plastic alternatives.

The unit is great for indoor use, but it's quite poorly created. The plastic shoe feels flimsy and poorly constructed.

Although I already own a portable video light with a diffusion filter, I thought that this might be a good addition for shooting video and stills in low-light conditions. I am amazed by the intensity of the light - and really like the dimming capability. This will make my job of doing machine safety surveys, job-safety analyses, and accident forensics a lot easier - and will help provide more defined digital photos for inclusion into reports.

Some talk about it being flimsy, but what do you expect when it's about 5 times cheaper than a LitePanels and it probably puts out as much light.

Very lightweight for transport w/o batteries. Light Dimmer works great. Light output impressive. Light stand / Hot Shoe mount works yet could be sturdier. An intelligent way to light your video without the heat of studio lights or still photos without a flash. Suggest a bundle of the alternate rechargable camcorder battery with the light vice 6 AA batteries. Promote Green.
