Not quite

I've had this diffuser since last October. It kept falling off the Canon 580EX speedlite during the first wedding I used it at....not good. The "teeth", it grips with, should be longer to cover more of the flash. I had to tape it onto the flash. The next wedding, I had problems with my flash firing and was very upset at some of the shots I missed. Later I realized that the hotfoot was separating due to the heavy weight of the diffuser on the flash. It eventually pulled away completely, leaving me without a hotfoot mount. Needless to say, I believe it should be redesigned to be lighter and a better fit on the flash. Other than that, it does give a ton of light if you direct it properly and use it under the circumstances given in the tutorial dvd.

Fillup the whole room

Very nice design diffuser dome. Fill the whole room with light and greatly reduce shadow behind subject. Excellent buy.

Great diffuser

It works as described. I have no experience with any other diffuser, but here's my experience with this one. It greatly improves indoor shots, and also works well for outdoor fill lighting. I use it whenever I use my flash. The diffuser cone is a flexible plastic, which makes it nigh invincible, and it also serves as a nice added pad in my photo bag. Attaching the diffuser isn't instant, since you have to stretch it a little bit over the flash head, but it's pretty easy, and much better this way than having the diffuser fall off of the head because it's too loose. The only other downside I can think of is that the flash becomes more distracting with this diffuser, because the lighting now goes in all directions, rather than mostly in front of me. That's also why this diffuser works so well, though. The DVD that came with the flash was cheesy, but informative and useful.

The only flash accessory you need.

I shoot weddings, industrial images, and do some photojournalism. (I shoot for the local paper on weekends.) Without a doubt, the lightsphere is the best on-flash diffuser I have ever used. It takes a day or two of experimentation to really 'get it' - ut when you do, you will wonder how you eber got along without it. I have both the original and the cloud and I use them all the time. I used to carry 3 flashes and an IR transmitter in my bag. Now I carry one flash and the two lightspheres. Comes with an instructional DVD that gets you up and running quickly.

Gary Fong's Lightsphere Cloud - The BEST

I’ve been using the Lightsphere for a while now and have owned seven Lightsphere units in various versions since the Lightsphere II came out. Of the seven, I still have three for use with my Nikon SB-800’s and Vivitar 283’s. Currently, I’m using the Lightsphere Cloud on the SB-800’s (with and without the Inverted Dome) and it’s been working out great. For many weddings now, I had been using the Cloud without the Inverted dome unless I needed to do some fill flash work in which case I put the Inverted dome on and face it forward. But recently, I’ve also found that the Cloud and Inverted Dome does wonders when working with 25 feet high ceilings too! At a recent wedding, I put on my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens on my Nikon D200 camera and used the Lightsphere Cloud with the Inverted Dome pointed straight up to the 25 foot ceiling and got incredible candid shots of people at the reception. I shot this “sniper-style” from far away and the light from the Nikon SB-800 and Lightsphere Cloud / Dome combination could not be beat! The quality of the light is pretty amazing considering the height of the ceiling and the distance I was shooting from. I’m still a fan of the Lightsphere and use it exclusively whenever I use a flash. I’ve tried everything out there, and to me… the Lightsphere Cloud is the best of the bunch!

Studio Quality Lighting on the Run

I have used Gary Fong's Lightsphere Inverted Dome System since it came out. I use it for ALL of my lighting situations. We shoot Weddings full time and the Lightsphere is used at over 50 Weddings per year. It works wonderfully in intimate settings as well as giving great light output in dark reception halls. This item truly gives you studio quality lighting "on the run". I recommend this product to anyone and have actually purchased the Lightsphere for all my assistants as well as family members.

A bare-tube flash is just like any other flash--except that it has no reflector behind the flash tube. It sends light relatively evenly in all directions (except directly down).

About Gary Fong P4 Clear Lightsphere II, Dome Flash Diff Sys

This is a flexible, totally CLEAR VINYL diffuser with an internal snap on dome. Designed to fit a select group of flashes (see list of flashes below)
The inside of the Lightsphere is completely textured to make the light dispersion even more "soft" than it would be otherwise!

Clear vinyl cuts down on light loss and also gives it a more sleek professional appearance while still delivering the soft diffuse light you demand. This version is designed for fast action, tight spaces and crowds. The new vinyl construction ensures a snug fit on a wide range of flash heads without the need for adaptors. Everything you asked for is finally here!

The inverted dome allows you to softly diffuse direct light with a large, soft source without creating flare on the front of your lens.

The P4 Lightsphere II fits the following flashes

• Canon 580EX,& 430EZ
• Sony HVL-F32X
• Vivitar 730AF

The LightSphere System is also available in non see through Cloud Version
What are the differences between the Lightsphere CLEAR and CLOUD? Which one is better for my situation? Which Lightsphere is best for any given setting is as much a matter of photographer preference and loyalty as anything. Many pros carry both styles in their gear bag for varying lighting situations.

Both Lightspheres provide excellent diffusion and studio quality light from your on-camera flash. Both are made of flexible, premium grade vinyl and inclu de the inverted dome made of hard, translucent plastic.

The Lightsphere-Photojournalist (PJ) is made of soft, transparent vinyl, and currently comes in two colors - CLEAR and CLOUD. The light quality transmitted through the CLEAR is somewhat cooler and a little more contrasty when compared to the CLOUD. The Lightsphere-CLEAR maximizes diffusion while minimizing light loss, allowing it to be used at greater distances. The CLEAR is highly recommended for photojournalistic assignments and general purpose photography.

The Lightsphere-CLOUD creates a more diffuse, softer, and somewhat warmer light. For this reason, it is well suited for "portrait style" lighting situations, where skin tones and flattering light are the primary focus.

Gary recommends, "Choose the CLEAR version for fast action, large groups and dimly lit scenes. Switch to the new CLOUD for the softest, warmest light yet. Great for close-ups, portraits, couples and intimate group shots."

Hint... Gary is IN LOVE with the light he achieves from the CLOUD, it really suits his current lighting style.
