Questions & Answers

DARIN M : How much space does this bag have vs the LowePro Vertex 300?BARRY S : I own 3 of these Farace Backpacks and use them all of the time. I keep my Canon speedlites and Quantum QFlash system in them. Room enough for the flashes themselves plus lots of accessories, including the Ultimate LightBox system of modifiers, RadioPoppers, etc. I don't have a 16" notebook, nor a 100-400mm lens, nor a LowePro Vertex 300 to compare in answer to the specific question.TERRY H : The Adorama Joe Farace Reporter II can carry a lot of equipment for its size compared to other backpacks of similar size. However, it is a lighter duty backpack and does not have the heavy duty construction of a Lowe bag. I like this bag because it holds so much and is light weight as I only need to carry it for short distances of less than a 0.5 mile and the price is right. If you are going to do serious hiking or traveling via an air line or want a bag that will hold up to heavy duty use, I would suggest going with a Lowe or Pelican or other brand name backpack.CAROLE J : Hi, I like this bag but it doesn't have wheels, which I would have liked as a woman. It holds a 17" laptop which is what I have so that is great and holds a lot of camera stuff. So for a man it would be a good bag to buy for the price.RICHARD M : Not familiar with the Vertex 300 but the Farace bag holds: My Canon 7D with 100-400 attached plus my 70-200mm lens, my 10-22mmCanon wide angle, my Canon 24-05mm plus a420ex flash AND my13" MacBook Pro. Now I sure can't carry all this very far for sure but it's nice to be able to transport everything in one backpack. Another (minor) feature: the zippers work the smoothest of anything I've ever owned. I recommend the Reporter II!NITO ( : I am not sure comparatively but it is very large. I wish the handle and shoulder straps were more reinforced but besides that, it is great.DALE B : I know nothing about the Vertex 300. But here's what I store and carry in my Joe Farace Reporter II: My SONY Alpha 350 DSLR with 18-70 mm lens mounted A 70-300 mm zoom lens Battery charger with extra battery A pair of Bushnell binoclulars A Garmin Etrex GPS Everything I need to keep my camera and lenses clean A USB cable for downloading photos A 16' remote release cable (some day I'll go wireless) Several cards A mini tripod (And this uses only five of the 13 compartments I've got in my divider arrangement) And when I travel, I take my 16" Toshiba laptop, in the rear compartment, plus a mouse, mouse pad, USB cables, power cord, etc, in some of the spare compartments inside. That leaves room in the larger, zippered, front compartment for notebooks, calculator, extra pens, etc., with much space left over. I'm still trying to find stuff to carry in the other front pocket. And, oh yes, I forgot the mesh pocket on the inside, where I carry my camera's manual, some extra lens caps, and other small stuff. Do I use this bag? Everywhere I go and every chance I get. Do I like it? It's the best buy I've ever made.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?CARLTON D : I love this backpack ! It holds everything ! Plenty of room and pockets.DALE B : The size and price were right. Its flexible interior makes it convenient. I needed one bag for my photgraphic equipment and 16" laptop, and this fit the bill.

Love it

I bought one of these after I bought a new 4x5 field camera. I've now had it for a year, and I would recommend it. I do a lot of site work in places that are occasionally difficult to get to (old power plants, historic houses, old factories, etc.), and both its light weight and ruggedness have done wonders. It carries the camera, three lenses, associated small gear (loupe, filters, notebook, tape measure), meters, bag bellows, black cloth, and a few film holders with ease. My only caveat is a certain degree of limited flexibility in rearranging the interior space. I was able to position the spacers around the camera very nicely; I couldn't make the area around the small loose stuff fit quite as snugly. That, however, is a minor quibble; otherwise, it has been wonderful.

This is an excellent bag for my purposes

I travel to several meetings a month of my various military organizations. I normally shoot RAW + JPEG and like to do a little tweaking before giving the pictures to the member that publishes the monthly bulletin. This bag allows me to conveniently carry my laptop along with my other gear.

Short Lived

I traveled alot and used this bag for both my photography equipment and a 17" laptop. After a month, one of the shoulder straps began to rip at the seam that connects it to the bottom of the bag. I went to a tailor and had it sewn back on. A week later the other strap was also off, except this time the bag ripped and now there is a hole on the bottom of the bag. The fact that I could carry both my camera gear and laptop made it a great bag, but unfortunately the material could not hold the weight of two cameras, four lenses, a flash and a laptop. After less then two months worth of use I had to replace it.

Great for travel, but not field

It is great to take all my photo gear and a laptop in one pack, with room to spare for a few toiletries, and perhaps a change of wrinkle free clothes. Well padded for protection, and also a pocket for a a few office supplies, such as clipboard, pens, stapler, business cards, a few brochures, etc. Very configurable. Comfortable as a backpack through airports, etc. Too heavy for a field pack unless only carrying a few items, and then it would be bulky with all the empty space. Wish it had a side handle in addition to the top handle, so it could be carried like a regular suitcase. Wheels and a handle might work on smooth floors. Again, this is not for the field unless you are stronger that this old bag of worn out bones.

Great Value

Large and very well padded. Plenty of room for camera, 3 flashes, accessories, and several lenses. Laptop and power brick have their separate padded pocket. And there is another pocket for office supplies. Shoulder strap adjustment buckles tended to slip under load. Thanks go to previous poster who rethreaded the straps. He cured my problem. Too big and heavy for backpacking in the field, but great for travel to site. Too soon to know if strap stitching will hold, but expect to use suitcase handle more often. Wish it had a side handle and/or wheels.

Great for travel

I have a couple of camera cases, and a camera backpack that I hate and will be unlikely to use...I "won" on [...]. I am VERY happy with the Farace Backpack. Spaces inside are easliy adjusted for lenses, etc. I am on my way back to Costa Rica for a short trip and will be travelling light, but this is perfect for my 50D, 4 lenses, including a 70-200 f 2.8, a strobe and an underwater digital camera and periferals. The laptop fits in very nicely. If, as I hope, it fits under the seat on the plane ( an earlier reviewer says it does) then I will be totally satisfied.

Well Designed Bag

I own 3 of these backpacks. The new larger sized ones are perfect for holding lighting gear. One holds all of my Canon Speedlites, auxiliary battery packs, RadioPopper wireless transmitter/receivers, Ultimate Light Box modifiers, stand adaptors, plus the odds and ends accessories. The second bag holds my Qflash gear, 3 flash heads, 3 Turbo batteries, 3 sets of Ultimate Light Box modifiers, the Pilot transmitter, stand adaptors, and extra stuff.

Great bag for the $$

Bought this bag to replace an undersized hard case. It does a great job of holding all I need for location shooting. I haven't used the backpack straps... I wonder about the strength, but the top handle is a great way to move it around. Plenty of room for many lenses, camera bodies and flashes plus more. No regrets in buying this one.

Great for Digital, MF and Large Format

I have two of these bags and use them for both Digital and Large Format photography. Quality for the price is excellent. I have no problem taking my 4X5 View Camera and my DSLR + lenses into the field or as carry on. This is all the photo backpack you will need. Its completely adjustable and can be tailored to any fit shape. Highly Recommended

Poor Backpack Design

Though the overall construction of the case was well planned out, the seams where the shoulder straps meet and attach to the case body tore open upon repeated use as a backpack. This occured a few months past the warranty and I am considering bringing the pack to a shoe repair service to reinforce the seams.

Zippers are too small Cheap

Looks great and very roomy. It is just the right size for me. The zippers appear to be weak and cheap. The strap and shoulder attachments appear to be sewn on in a weak way. I got what I ordered...an [$] bag. Not a $300.00 bag. I got exactly what I ordered a cheap bag. I should not complain. Remember...the price tells everything.

Great Camera suitcase

I love it! I need something large enough to carry all my photo gear when I travel. This suitcase fits the bill perfectly! I use a Lowepro Sling 200W to do field work, but it can't carry everything. I've got plenty of room to expand my inventory of lens and camera bodies (and everything else I need.)

Poor Man's Think Tank Airport backpack

I needed an airline carry-on backpack that can handle a 15" MacBook Pro on a rigid sleeve, this is perfect for that. There's even an outside pocket for a water bottle. It's much roomier than my LowePro MiniTrekker. For the poster that is missing the rain cover, there is one at the bottom of the pack inside a pocket held closed by velcro My only nit so far is that the adjustment straps for the shoulder pads were threaded on backwards in the ladderlock buckles making the strap loosen under load. Easy enough to fix by rethreading the strap so that the ends were on the outside where they are easy to adjust instead of being next to your body.

Good for Large Format

I shoot Large Format 4X5 and its great for hauling field cameras, extra lens, and spot meter. I use the laptop compartment to haul 21 4x5 film holders. The front compartment has plenty of room for other accessories. Comfortable on the back when loaded. I also use this for digital SLR and its got plenty of room.

Getting ready to buy a second one...

I've been using this pack for 2 and a half years now, tons of traveling, crammed to the gills with camera bodies, lenses, flashes, hard drives and a laptop. It's stood up to everything I can throw at it... except for the time I left one of the straps lying on top of a very hot halogen light embedded into the floor of the W Hotel in Union Square. (Burned almost all the way through the strap, the hole the size of a bullet.)Not always the most ergonomic choice, but I'll gladly give that away for the fact it stows neatly under most airline seats. I do wish Adorama would take their name off the handle... I like having as little to advertise the fact I'm carrying camera equipment as possible.

Good design, lame stitching

I've been using the original Reporter for about 6 months. Wanted something lighter than my big Tenba but still able to hold a lot of gear. The Reporter does that. Only gripe is that after two months the stitching on top near the laptop pocket and over the accessories pocket started disappearing, so I'm leery of the straps, etc. Good bag for short hikes and for working out of the car, but not as good for serious hiking. I like it well enough that I will get the Reporter II, but I AM worried about the stitching.

Needs Better Zipper

Overall I like the pack. It holds, protects, and makes transport easy of all I need it to. I have had two occassions when one of the main compartment zippers separated. The second time it opened far enough to spill some equipment. Luckily, other than dents and scraps, nothing was rendered inoperable, but I now secure the pack with a strap to prevent this happening again. This slows access to equipment. Weak zippers is a serious design flaw in what would otherwise be the ideal equipment backpack. I would defintely recommend this backpack but caution the user to not rely on the zippers provided. I almost lost a video camera.

Poor Construction

I purchased this bag with high hopes only to be dashed on my second excursion with it. The backpack straps have ripped away from the main unit. After using the top handle instead, the internal stiffener has started to push through the top of the bag. In addition, several seams are starting to show signs of unraveling. This bag is a nightmare after only a couple of uses.

Nice price but mine was poorly made

Everything about this backpack was what I wanted and needed. The size was right and price was unbelievable. I was very happy with this pack until coming home from a wedding and one of the shoulder straps ripped out of the bottom causing everthing to crash to the floor. I would suggest checking the strength of the stitching before loading $5000 worth of equipment into it. I guess the saying "You get what you pay for" would apply here. [...]

Sub $100 Laptop/Camera for two bodies

I enjoyed this. I considered the Tamrac, and Lowepro, but short of dropping [$] or more didn't have any mainstay options. This is a great value, and feels well balanced on my back when I'm lugging a D200 with grip, D70s, 4 batteries, and accessories.

nice and a good value

easily accomodates 2 bodies,2 zooms(including a 100-400 canon),speedlight, image bank(epson p2000),a point and shoot(panasonic LX2),and other odds and ends. My 15.4" laptop fits well and the outside zip compartment holds cords, manuals, cf cards, batteries, recharging units, etc. I do wish it had a better a way to attach a tripod but overall it is a fine day bag for travel and light hiking.

Good backpack for the price

I have used this camera backpack in the field several times now and it is comfortable to wear, holds all my gear including a widescreen laptop, 100-400mm lens, another lens, and two camera bodies. It appears well made, but I have noticed some loose threads so I am now questioning just how well made it is. All the pieces of the pack are still together but some of these threads are very long. They had to come from somewhere.

Quality problems

I purchased the backpack in April 2007 and used the backpack while traveling to Singapore, Australia and Alaska. The adjustable pockets are good for large lens, small DVD cameras, DSLRs, filters, cables and flash units. With a full load of camera gear, the backpack can place a heavy load on your shoulders. My laptop computer fit snug in the back of the pack and was well protected. In Australia, Qantas airline required me to weight the backpack and declared it overweight for its size. I had to remove the laptop to fall within the right weight limit.During my September trip to Alaska the top part of the left shoulder strap connected to the pack began shredding apart leaving only the nylon webbing to hold the strap. [...]. I will look for a better quality camera backpack when I replace this one.

nice, but too small

This pack seems to be well built, with lots of storage. My complaint is that it will NOT hold my new HP notebook with a 17" screen. The top 1.5 inches sticks out of the back, making it impossible to close. I wasted my money.

LOOKS LIKE A REGULAR BACKPACK

By Janr4719

I searched for a backpack style case that would meet all my needs without success until I found this one. I wanted one that would hold all my cameras. I have my Mini-DVD Camcorder, my small 5 mp camera, my large 8 mg camera and all the lenses, flashes, lights, cords, and all the other extra equipment that goes with them. I fell in love with the fact that this looks like a standard packpack and doesn't advertise the fact that it has expensive equipment inside it. I also like the back strap th...

"A photographers dream backpack"

By The s.

I can carry my camera, equipment and laptop safely to my next photo session. It opens up easy so I can find what photo equipment that I am looking for. It gives you confidence that everything will work because of the well padded compartments that protect your equipment.

The Joe Farace II bag is now LARGER! It's rear compartment will hold a 17" laptop. (not the oversized 17" Powerbook) Lightweight yet durable, it will hold a lot of gear. The flexible dividers allow customizing the interior to accommodate your equipment.
