Questions & Answers

Curtis J : I do ALL real estate photos. Is this a good tool for me? I like to have my whites white and the paint on the walls a true color. Would I have to take a shot of this in every room I shoot? Thanks!!STEVEN C : If the lighting is different in each room yes its best to shoot it in each room. i.e. one Room's light is sunshine another is incandescent. If they are close or same type of light shoot the passport is enough. Then sync the color across all images in your editor. Test it under the average situation until you are happy with the method and results.JONATHAN B : Yes you would for ultimate accuracy, if the lighting in each room is different. For that matter, if one part of the room is in daylight balance and another is in warm/incandescent lighting you should balance each part separately. The Passport software does offer a dual-lighting option for generating your profiles in those cases (but you'd need a separate dual profile for each house/room with mixed lighting). However since the typical end-user is looking at the pictures on an uncalibrated monitor, getting perfect colour in the images you provide may be overkill. Then, too, the buyer's probably going to repaint anyhow.MARK B : This is a good tool for establishing the correct white balance, but you would need to include it in the first shot of each change in lighting conditions. This is is much designed for creating specific camera profiles and storing those in the camera, but you would still need to shoot the gray or white card when starting and whenever you see a change in lighting. I would suggest you would be happier with an Expoimaging Expodisc 2.0 (see link below). This device is used to set a custom white balance in the camera and using whatever procedure is right for your equipment to set that white balance. I shoot a lot of architecture and interiors and have been very happy with the Expodisc and would highly recommend that. The Expodisc covers the entire front of the lens (can be ordered in whatever size is appropriate for you.)
Shopper : How long is the color accuracy guaranteed?MARK B : I do not think there is a guaranteed length of time, but if you take care of it and keep the case closed up when not in use it should last years.JOEL F : The photo that you take of the Color Checker Passport with the light in your scene. The photo is read by the associated computer software, and a camera profile is made. That profile is used by Photoshop to create a color match across the color space, not just at the grey value. Following that, the color accuracy should last as long as your monitor remains calibrated. If you go to some other area or light situation, you will need to take another photo of the passport and make another camera profile.JIM M : You calibrate once per lighting situation and camera combo. You create a profile for each situation from a photo of the color checker with that camera and that profile applies to all shots under those same conditions. That profile will always, and exclusively, apply to that exact light and camera combination. What exactly were you hoping to have guaranteed??Steven S : X-rite says 2 tears but ive been using mine over 3 and its still very accurate. As long as you dont leave it laying in the light it wont fade.
Shopper : Is the color checker software compatible with Apple Mountain Lion OS ?Scott O : I think so, but to be sure give the manufacturer a call.MARK B : Yes. See X-Rite's site but does work will all Mac OS after 10.0JIM M : yesJAMES F : I cannot answer that. You will need to check manufacturing specs of softwareKEN F : I'm running it on Mac OS 10.8.3. I can't confirm but I believe I first used it on 10.7 Lion and have updated OS since and it still works.

Color checker

I use the Zone system and an external spot meter to only shoot in manual mode. As I don't rely on the camera's auto metering setting, the color checker is my main point of reference for neutral grey. I expose for zones in B&W and the colors fall in line.

Accurate color, minimal space

So far, so good with these. They fold small enough to slide virtually anywhere in your go-bag.

nice card, poor software

The colorchecker passport is a handy tool for color correction, but the software creates inaccurate profiles. For most people this is hard to detect, but one of my applications is to photograph my paintings so I can tell if the color is off. If you do buy this thing I'd suggest using the Adobe DNG profile editor to create proper profiles.

Buy This Right Now!

How did I even process RAW images before having this? I put off buying one of these for so long, and I'm here to tell you to not make the same mistake. Save yourself the headache of having to make manual adjustments for every shot. The ColorChecker Passport is a must have for any digital photographer's work flow. Flawless color and white balance every time.

Color Control

Made to last, the passport brings color / exposure control across the capturing / processing spectrum. Consistent / reproducible results. Do more . . . . work less. Well worth the effort!

Great system

I love this system because it assures genuine color reproduction, based on standards in photography, and adds a little color pop to the displayed colors without going overboard. Great!

Great Product

This is absolutely necessary for correct color and white balance. Light Room can automatically generate a profile, and apply it to all your photos. I use a Nikon D810 and notice that my camera tends to change blues...making them a bit lighter...greens are affected but not much, and sometimes the camera casts a yellowish color on things. You wouldn't know this if you didn't use the Passport...you'd just think "my pictures look great." Knowing this, I can decide whether I need to do the color correction or not...sometimes the images look better just using the Adobe Color setting in LR...sometimes, I need the blues to pop or the yellow shading needs to be removed. You can also adjust the white balance. Basically, you take a picture of the Passport, then use the eye dropper tool and click on different patches...if you're using different lights (and i use a combination of flash, LED, a pocket flashlight, and an Ikea lamp) this is highly useful. There's not much of a learning curve to this...maybe a few days to find an online tutorial and then a day to tinker around in LR. I would say that if you're going to get this you need to get Xrite's screen calibrating device...there's no sense in having color corrected images that are then displayed improperly on your computer screen. Invest in both and you won't regret it.

Useful accessory

Color checker is especially useful with multiple light sources. I use lots of mixed lighting with my macro studio -- either types of light or gels. Good product for portraits, as well. Not so much for my landscapes.

Advantage of Keep to Basics

Though this item maybe described as a professional item, it still calls us back to basic white balance. Over time we can become lazy or pick up bad habits and wait until post to fix. Stay true to your craft ladies and gentleman, do it right the first time, WB, WB, and WB!

Extremely simple to use -- Extremely useful!

Small, compact and folds into a hard shell protective case which opens to self-stand. Creating color profiles for camera/light source combinations is very simple using the included software. Just take a picture of the ColorChecker, put it in the software, add the generated profile to LightRoom and you will achieve greatly enhanced colors in all of your images with just one click. Additionally, the neutral grey squares are perfect for one click adjusting color balance using the eyedropper tool. (If these squares are too small, the protective case can be opened to a much larger neutral grey source.) Just stand the ColorChecker in the image, take a shot, remove it and take a second shot. In LightRoom color balance the including shot and then sync that correction to the shot w/o it. (Or, the whole device is small enough that it can often be removed simply by using the spot remover tool.) Yes, I would recommend this item to a friend!

Does the trick

By DAVID M.

There are time when color accuracy matters. A bride knows the color of her lipstick, her bridesmaid's dresses, etc... It has simplified my post-processing workflow and taken out alot of guesswork in trying to get accurate colors when it matters.
