Be careful. This head slips and slips with I have my D810 w/ 70-200 Nikon lens. Not pleased. Gitzo states that it should hold 30lbs. Not quite. The ball slips.... and I can not use it in landscape. It just droops. I tighten it, and tighten until it hurts the hand! Ouch. This company site, will not let me put in one "star", it defaults to 2 stars. Cheap.

Gitzo is known for their tripods, not so much for their ballheads. I got this one because of a $100 rebate for buying a Gitzo tripod and ballhead combo. The only problem I had was some lube leaking out. Otherwise it's strong, easy to use, and has levels all around it, making perfect setup a breeze.

This is a very nice complete package for the enthusiast/prosumer. Price-performance is very attractive and this ball head is very feature-rich. The quick-release is a bit different, compared to Arca, RRS, or Kirk, but seems to hold medium-weight systems rather securely. The built-in safety features are very good for preventing accidental drops. Nice to have many spirit levels, 3 on the QR assembly and one in the ball column. Panning is very solid and smooth, and ball lock is good. Build quality and smoothness of operation are good, but not quite like higher end ball heads like Arca B1, Z1, Kirk BH-1, RRS BH-55, but that is what I expected. Not so hot on the QR lever, sometimes awkward to operate. Overall, great package and will do nicely for light to moderate weight systems on a medium weight tripod, like GT2540.

This head is light. Controls are easy to use. There is some drag adjustment to the main knob but I have not used it. Overall this head is great compared to the studio head I have been carrying for the last couple years. I did have a bit of trouble getting the QR plate attached to the bottom of the camera tightly enough. A quarter or a wide flat bladed screwdriver is needed to get it tight enough. The rubber on the QR plate is very stiff. I was using a Canon 5d with 24-70 in portrait orientation when I noticed the droop.

Very well designed and works well with Gitzo tripod GT2531. Very easy to move/adjust directions.
Gitzo GH2780QR is the new generation of Gitzo center ball heads, engineered to be the perfect match to the tripods. These heads are designed to be an extremely balanced product, that not only guarantee a high max load, but that also maximize other key features, too often overlooked by the end users. These features include smoothness, minimized drift angle, lightweight, low gravity center, grater tilt angles, compactness, ergonomics and safety.
This is achieved by means of unique and exclusive technical solutions, such as the hollow "Bubble Ball", the "Spring Assisted Double Lock" (SADL) and the new leveling system. Gitzo center ball heads now feature two newly developed materials for discs and quick release plates that substitute the traditional cork plates. Discs now feature Safe Lock - a special techno polymer that maximises locking torque, eliminates micro movements and cuts vibration.
It is also used on Gitzo tripod upper discs for a better fit between tripod and head. Quick release plates now feature Safe Grip, a high grip material that holds your equipment safely and prevents it from moving or slipping.
