Gitzo GT3542LS

I'm in agreement with the other reviewers and can't add many more kudos for this great tripod. I'll give it 4.5 stars rounded to 5.0. I'm coming from a Benro C2970 carbon tripod with a center column looking for a steadier solution and it looks like this one is a huge improvement in that regard. I'm a little disappointed in the quality of the carry bag supplied for photography equipment of this caliber, akin to a softer version of the rip stop mailer envelopes. Another surprise for me was noticing when picking up the tripod to move it a short distance, the legs moved beyond vertical and continued in the opposite direction under the camera mount. This happened while birding with my 7DMKll, 400mm and Induro gimbal in four feet tall grasses as the legs would be snarling in the grasses. Not a good thing but fortunately I had a good hold on the legs and after a few "choice words" under my breath, managed to reset the legs. I'm assuming that all "flat top" tripods with out columns do this. My Benro's legs pivot much tighter and contact the column and prevented any further travel. I checked this by removing the column and it also moves beyond vertical, although not nearly as far as the Gitzo. Also I tried to tighten the pivot screws on the legs but couldn't as I find them already at maximum torque. Other than not being able to snug up the leg pivots, it does function extremely well.

Gitzo 3542LS Systematic CT Tripod review

I spent alot of time deciding which tripod was best for my new 500f4IS, finally realizing that I must protect my investment and not take chances with my older gear that was risky tripod support. I needed sturdy, tall enough, and lightweight, knowing that is hard to come by. I bit the bullet and chose over another competitor because I knew Gitzo was always considered the best, and it weighed a half lb. less than the other. Weight is a deciding factor for me. The Gitzo beauty arrived 10 days later, and I admired the precision I never had on my old gear. The leg locks design is brilliant. I was a little disappointed that is was about 1 lb. heavier than what I read. And it does fold up rather clumsily, because Gitzo has improved the sturdiness of the leg attachment to the head, making it now larger than the older models at the head base. Folding the legs in is a slight difference than before. I would have preferred the smaller head plate, but I may get used to it. The quality makes up for these two factors, though, so it's growing on me. Now a triangle rather than circular base. Another factor for me was will it fit in my carry on suitcase? YES! At 23 inches. Very important, no way would I pack this beauty in a checked suitcase. My old tripod did not fit and I had to carry a smaller tripod on trips, which just did not work well for my older 500f4IS weight. The height is perfect. I am 5'7 and worried it was too short, but I'd say it is perfect for anyone under 5'10. If you need an extra inch but don't want the weight of the taller tripod like the XLS, just add a panorama level and a tall ballhead to this one, giving you 5 more inches. The legs are sturdy, and so far set up is a breeze, I also bought the Induro BHL2 ballhead to go with it, which is outstanding also. I feel like I finally have the right stuff, and have made photog life easier, with precision up a notch.

Gitzo Series 3 6x Systematic GT3542LS Carbon Tripod adds the maximum sturdiness since the ball head is mounted directly on top of the tripod legs and maintains the light weight. By having 4-section legs, it is more compact when collapsed.

Gitzo GT3542L Features

  • Hook: This built-in accessory allows you to hang a stabilizing weight (e.g. a full camera bag or a sand/water bag) from the bottom of the tripod centre column. Useful with long/heavy lenses, on uneven ground or in windy conditions
  • Leg Ends: Removable rubber feet. This feature allows you to easily change worn out rubber feet or to fit other accessories, such as spiked feet or snow/sand shoes
  • Ocean-Lock: The Ocean-Lock is a special version of Gitzo G-Lock of which it maintains the same outstanding locking performances. Thanks to two special seals derived form the automation industry, it minimizes the amount of water and debris that may enter tubes and locking mechanisms
  • ALR: Gitzo has introduced a new Anti Leg Rotation system, which means the tripod can be opened in less than 15 seconds. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually
  • Ratchet Locking Lever: Allows you to easily and securely engage and disengage the top plate or other systematic accessories
