Questions & Answers

Thakur Dalip S : All reviewers say this card reader is faster than USB 2.0 because it is USB 3.0. I want to know if this card reader is fast because of USB 3.0on computer and reader ? or, it is fast because of its special technology and uniqueness? Is this card reader faster than other USB 3.0 card readers, like Sandisc, Lexar etc?Thomas B S : As with any device, it will only be as fast as the USB port on the computer. If you use a USB 3 device on a USB 2 port on a computer, it will run at USB 2 speeds. If you have an older computer with USB 2 ports, you can sometimes upgrade with an internal card or on Mac with a Thunderbolt adapter to get USB 3 ports.JOAN A : In order to get the benefit of any 3.0 card reader you will need a computer that has a 3.0 port. It will only run as fast as the port allows. I have no knowledge of comparison between the various 3.0 readers. The Hoodman 3.0 made a huge difference in read speed. Hope that helps.JOHN K : This card reader is about the same speed as USB 3 readers from SanDisk and Lexar. It is a little more expensive than those readers because it's better built (IMO).THOMAS W : If BOTH the reader and your computer are USB 3, this card reader will operate at it maximum transfer speed (USB 3.) If your computer is USB 2, it will operate at the slower (USB 2) speed. Other than that, it is just another USB 3 capable device.BRUCE B : USB 3.0 is a technical specification. Any USB 3.0 card reader should be faster than a USB 2.0 reader. Read speeds are very dependent on the brand of card and the specs on the card. Many discounted cards have slow read speeds. Typically, the faster cards are double or triple the price of the slow cards. I am a professional videographer. I travel two to three times a week on jobs. My Hoodman card reader always travels wih me. The build quality on these readers exceeds anything else I've seen on the market. I do not worry about them working. Super solid, can take a tremendous amount of abuse in a bag and not miss a beat. I won't buy anything else. I won't recommend anything other than a Hoodman card reader. I own two; one sits in the shop, one travels with me on every job. Expensive? Yes. Best value? Absolutely.
Shopper : will this read 64 GB flash cards into a mac? many readers do not do this. and i have 64GB cardsDavid T : Sorry, I don't use a Mac either.GREGORY P : Do not know. I use mine on a PC with a 32 and 16gb CF and it works well.ANN B : I am not sure about a mac, it does fine for a pc..NICHOLAS B : Not 100% sure, the highest card I have is 16 GB and it reads the cards into my mac fine. HAROLD M : Sorry, but I cannot help. I have never tried a 64GB card, I would ask Hooddman.JEFFREY B : We have used this reader with 64GB CF cards and Macs without a problem.CLYDE HARRIS J : YesPETER D : It never has worked consistently reading my 16 GB flash cards into Aperture on my iMac. I've reverted to using a cord from camera to USB port on the computer.
Shopper : I have an iMac purchased in 2011. How can I tell if it has a USB 3.0 interface?SAMUEL B : The 2011 iMac did not have USB 3.0. I believe the 2012 Mac Pros were the first to have USB 3.0 installed. In any case, you can go to the Apple menu in the top left corner and select About this Mac... and then click on More Info in the dialog box that appears. From there, you can select USB under Hardware and you MIGHT be able to determine the flavor of USB you have. However, there are some sites, including Apple, most likely, that will tell you which flavor you have. In any case, the Hoodman card reader will still work, as it's backward compatible with USB 2.0, and I'm using it on my 2010 iMac without a problem. Hope this helps.STEPHEN L : I believe that iMacs from 2011 have USB 2.0, not USB 3.0. iMacs started having USB 3 in 2012. You can confirm by clicking in the Apple menu, select About This Mac, then select More Info, and in the System Report click USB. It will tell you USB 2 or USB 3 for your iMac. The HoodMan USB 3.0 UDMA Card Reader works fine with USB 2 as well as with USB 3. When used with a computer that has USB 3, transfer rates can be 5-10 times faster than with USB 2.KENNETH N : I can guarantee that you do NOT have USB 3.0 on your iMac. Only recently has Apple embraced the USB 3.0 interface. As such, the card reader will work fine, just in USB 2.0 mode, so you won't see the higher speeds, but will top out between about 24-29MB/s. Sorry for the bad news, but it's still an excellent card reader.BRUCE B : USB 3.0 ports have a medium blue interior and an "SS" on top of the USB logo (for super speed). USB 2.0 ports have a black interior. If you look into the port and you see blue, USB 3.0. If you look into the USB port and see black - USB 1.0 or 2.0. Most Macs are either Thunderbolt or USB 2.0.JOHN K : You don't. USB3 wasn't included on the iMac line until 2012. The interface looks exactly the same and Hoodman card reader will work at USB2 speeds.MARK S : Apple menu> about this mac> more info> look for the USB port specsJEFFREY B : Your iMac will not support USB 3.0. But I believe the Hoodman drive comes with a USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 cable that will allow it to be used with your computer, however you won't get the speed associated with USB 3.0.

Solid performer with fast image download

For quickly downloading large numbers of Raw images, this robust flash card reader does the job using USB 3.0 technology for both compact flash and SD memory cards. With no moving parts except to the internal dust flap in the compact flash entry pathway, this camera memory card reader should hold up to years of downloading.

Need a Fast Card Reader?

I was looking to get a faster CF Card Reader and the Hoodman USB 3.0 RAW Steel UDMA Reader was the one. The RAW files produced by the Nikon D800 need a card reader of this caliber, unless you like waiting around for your files to be transferred to your computer. By no means is this a scientific test, but the transfer rate is almost double(1.68x)than my USB 2.0 CF Card Reader. Here is how I tested. Two RAW files taken with my D800 Total file size: 149 MB CF Card was an SanDisk Ultra 30MB/s 8GB Transfer Utility: ViewNX 2 v2.7.1 64-bit Transfer Time with Hoodman USB 3.0: 4.1 Seconds Transfer Time with SanDisk Extreme USB 2.0: 6.9 Seconds. A great feature is the built in Pin Guard, it takes a little getting used to but it's nice that the pins are not exposed. This reader is rugged, it's all metal case is stout! Another feature that sold me on this was the ability to upgrade the device firmware. Hoodman released firmware about 6 months ago to add UDMA 7 support. So you don't have to go out and get a new card reader to support the faster cards, just update the firmware!

Enjoy time saving 5 Gbps data transfers of CompactFlash or SD cards with the new ruggedized RAW STEEL SuperSpeed USB 3.0 UDMA card reader from Hoodman. Hoodman built the new reader into a ruggedized metal housing and added a new concept to readers called "Pin Guard".

Pin Guard is an innovative drop down door that keeps reader pins protected until a CompactFlash card is inserted into the reader. The well thought out detachable 36-inch USB 3.0 cable is plenty long enough to reach behind towers and still find a home on a desktop. Reinforced cable inputs, metal housing and "Pin Guard" all work together to yield the most durable card reader made.
