Questions & Answers

Shopper : I have the 7d 100-400L 77mm Ring 11-16mm Tokina 77mm Ring 50mm 1.2 L with 74 ring I want to buy a 82mm Heliopan Vari ND. The idea is that I one day may buy the 16-35 L which is a 82mm ring. Maybe I dont and keep my 7d and continue with the 7d. I assume one day I will buy a Full Format. I am really worried to go crazy with 82mm is that a mistake to plan so far ahead? I just can never buy another filter this expensive...JOHN D : So I think I am going to go with the 82mm even though I have (2) 77mm and corrected (1) 72mm filter size. I could decide on the 35 prime and just keep my 7d (avoiding the 16-35mm). The thing that I was not being clear on is my need for video (photo interest 1st still) and getting my shutter at 50fps during bright daylight. I should say that my worry and big question is will stepping down to 77mm or 72mm impact the image and make it silly to consider. Maybe its to bulky, causes blur, or is just to far to get to 72 on my best prime lens. If the 82mm with step down to 72mm is trivial and not an issue for the image I would be very happy. That is what I would like to hear. Thank you guys for your responses!JEFFREY H : I have 3x 7ds, 5dmk3, and a 1dx and used the 82mm Heliopan for my 16-35mm. This is a great filter. It is very clean and doesn't seem to cause any degradation to the shots that I take. It is quite pricy but to me it was well worth the money. I also have the 100-400mm 11-16mm and the 50mm. You may be able to buy a stop down ring so that the 82mm will fit the 77mm. I don't think they are too expensive. Hopefully this helped you out. I am a professional underwater photographer and I also do topside photography.DOUG O : Well, only you can answer your question. However, I think you will be making mistake if you buy a filter that doesn't fit your current lens lineup. You can always buy a step down ring to make it fit but I would worry more about getting the 16-35 than the filter. For now. ALFRED W : The Heliopan 82mm Variable ND filter is expensive, but it also a great product. It does not soften the image, and is very well constructed. You can buy inexpensive step-up rings to also use with your 77, 72, & 67mm lenses. I use it for photo and video, and it is equally good on both. Please note that It will vignette just a bit on the corners at 82mm. Nothing major though.
Shopper : I'm looking for one of these with front threads. Anyone have an idea ?THOMAS F : This filter has front threadsDICK P : They come with front threads. Specify sizeERIC T : Don't know if another manufacturer makes one with front threads. I put other filters in front of it. Also made sure it fit the largest lens diameter I have and used step up adapter if that combo was needed.Larry M : I have this filter. What exactly are you trying to do?CHRIS N : Yeah, no front threads. Sort of annoying because you can't use a cap, but for image quality it can't be beat. That's the trade off I suppose. If you need threads look at the Fader Variable ND. I have one for my 16-35. Definitely not in the same range of quality as the Heliopan, but it gets the job done. Also, why do you need front threads? If you are attaching other filters to it, you should probably just get a filter system like the LEE... if you can get your hands on it.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?GERARDO P : Considered to be the best without color shift issues.JAMES W : quality !DAVID H : this one had good reviews, and i wanted a filter of good quality

Does it’s job. Does it clean and well.

More expensive than many CPL’s. Worth it. When one uses this CPl, you do not necessarily see the sky (for example) turn a super-dark blue/Black as with other less expensive CPL’s I’ve used in past. The filter is certainly doing it polarization as designed, but seems to do it with more of a light touch, a little more finesse. And, you see it in the results.

Shooting wide open in bright light.

I chose this Heliopan variable neutral Density filter for my Summicron 75 mounted on an M10 for wide open (f2) shooting in bright light. The 75 Summicron is known to flare in bright light conditions and the M10 is known to be slightly biased toward overexposure. Enter the Heliopan variable neutral Density filter set between 3 and 6 and the problem is solved. A great piece of gear that is very well made.

Amazing quality

This lens filter is the real deal. It makes shooting in the harshest of sun a dream. I can't believe I have waited so long to purchase it. I will be ordering the 77mm as well. Thanks to Adorama TV for sharing the video about this piece of equipment.

Easy to use ND filter

This is way easier to use than a fixed ND filter. Spin the dial out to the minimum and frame your picture, then spin it in to reach your desired shutter speed. Easy as pie. It's also a useful polarizing filter when dialed out to the lightest setting. I did, on some of my test shots, get alternating light and dark quadrants (Nikon D90 with 35mm f/2 lens) when the filter was dialed in to maximum, That may have been a fluke of lining up the polarisers with the sensor grid. Though backing off from the maximum a millimetre prevented that effect. The filter also doesn't have any threads on the front, so you'll have to pop off the filter before putting your lens cap back on. I found that when the filter was dialed in towards the dark end, I had to use Manual exposure mode and trial-and-error to set the exposure on both my D90 and D7000. In short, though, a very useful and handy filter to have -- and definitely worth the price

A necessity for video

Best glass in the variable ND filters out there. Expensive, but good quality. It doesn't change color unless you push it to the limit.

Probably the best Variable ND Filter available.

Probably the best Variable ND Filter available. All the other Variable ND filter change the color/hue and destroy the sharpness. There really isn't any comparision. I got the 58mm size because all mys lenses have 58mm and smaller front threads. I keep 58mm stepup-rings and screw-on caps on at all times, as all my filters are 58mm as well. My only complaint is that it does not have front threads. The case is also pretty useless because it is not dust proof. And since this filter is extra thick it is hard to find a case for it. As I mentioned it does not have front threads so stack caps are also out of the quesiton.

This is indeed the best Variable ND Filter available

This is indeed the best Variable ND Filter available. I purchased this 52mm size at first because I didn't want to spend all the money on a 77mm since I was using mostly 46mm, 49mm, and 52mm filter thread lenses anyway. As time went on I began acquiring lenses that were 55mm, 58mm, and 77mm.. I then purchased the Heliopan 77mm Variable ND Filter. Why? Because this is the BEST one out there! If I would have known from the beginning, I would have spent the money on a 77mm never looked back. It's one of the best investments I've ever made. Camera bodies and lenses come and go...but this filter is forever.
