Refurbished Cabon EOS 40D

I'm a rookie and needed a fast frame rate to catch my kids hurdling/jumping etc at track meets as well as good action on soccer fields. The camera is fast enough for me, feels good in my hands, and is laid out well for the functions I use. The refurb unit didn't have a scratch or spec of dust and I'm 100% satisfied. Photo quality is excellent. Battery life is excellent.

Love the 40D

4 today (05-2011) 5 when it first came out. This was my first SLR camera. Bought it because I wanted the higher frame rate to take kid sports pictures such as waterskiing and soccor. With it I've captured kids in motion that I never really saw with my eyes just watching. I watched prices and bought the Canon Refurbished 40D with the 28-135 lens package from Adorama. Search 'Canon Refurbished' to see what is in-stock. Took the first year to really get the hang of Apeture - Shutter Speed - ISO, but that would be true of any SLR. Now trying to learn uses flashes, reflectors, scrims or gobos, etc. I absolutely love this camera. Size is nice for bigger hands (6'2"). Focus with the USM lenses is fast. High frame rate is great for kids in sports. Colors are beautiful. Plenty of on-camera adjustments for those more advanced. Has two wheels, one by trigger on top and one on back that really add to the speed of adjusting settings for a shot. Also has a nice screen on top for quick adjustments of commonly changed things. Viewfinder is very clear to my eye. Menu is easy to use once you learn Canon and SLR terminology. Adorama TV is very helpful if starting out and learning. Seems pretty rugged. I have taken this camera on boats, to the beach, on rough Boy Scout hikes including SeaBase Out-Island Adventure, through rain, dirt, etc. I do use a little raincoat and put it away if the rain really pours. Later to get wider I bought the 17-55 2.8 IS USM and to get longer the first version of the 70-200 2.8 IS USM, both fantastic lenses paired with this camera. I would also highly recommend image stabilized lenses. I have turned the feature off to see, and it definately helps me keep from adding unintentional photographer motion blur. My son has taken some very nice Macro shots, and together we did a senior portrait shoot for a graduating HS relative that turned out very nice. I would highly recommend the 40D to anyone as a higher performance more featured starter camera or as an upgrade from a Rebel, and also as an excellent second body if you want to have fast access to both a long lens and a wider lens at the same time without having to change lenses. This camera is a bit dated, and now outclassed by the 7D with video, better low light performance, etc for a lot more money.

Great kit, especially for beginners!

I have had this camera and lens for about 2 years now. The 40D is great and I even got a back up body that was also a 40D. It is a great camera and I couldn't have asked for a better starter lens then the 28-135! It did far enough away I could do nature photography, macro, I could do events, portraiture, sporting events, and it traveled many places with me. Now I have some better lenses so will not be used as much, but a better all around I don't think exists!

As good as new.

I am an amateur photographer and most interested in wildlife. With a long view lens, this camera has allowed me to get some of the birds I couldn't get with my other camera.

Good bargain. [...]

I upgraded from a Rebel XTI, and what a difference. This camera is in a different class for a reason. The overall build quality was well worth upgrading for by itself. I am mostly enjoying/appreciating the incredible frames per shot speed, 6.5! The kit lens, 28-135mm USM lens included are GREAT lens for the price. It is also a great walk around kit lens to start off with, though it may not be wide enough for serious landscape photographers. It's quiet and fast with decent range.

Love this rig!

If you are on a budget this is a great way to go. I could not be happier with this set up. I upgraded from a 20D. I love the increased LCD size and the same solid Canon design and ergonomics. I sometimes take paying assignments but mostly shoot for pleasure, and with the 40D shooting is indeed a pleasure. You will get pro results at a reasonable price. I have already recommended this same rig to friends and highly recommend it to you.

Impressed

This is SO much better than I was expecting! It's easy to get used to, produces some seriously amazing results like immediately out of the box, and they only get better and better. I would recommend this camera to anyone who needs to bridge the gap between full frame and point and shoots. It's a nicely weighted, well-balanced camera that impresses at every turn.

I got one of the Lemons.....

Great camera kit at a great price..... but as some have noted before me, you can get a lemon from time to time. Just sent the kit back for replacement the other day. The camera was writing "bad" images to the CF card, so when I went to view the pictures in playback, the camera said "cannot play back image."Also, the 28-135 lens was locking up randomly, not allowing me to take a picture.Very strange..... [...] I look forward to getting my replacement kit soon. Hopefully I don't get another lemon!!

Excellent Camera, lens has good range

It's not the easiest to learn for someone just upgrading to a DSLR. But I watched a video that showed me how to use it, and now use it w/ ease. My only real complaint is that the lcd could show a little more detail. The USM lens has superfast & quiet autofocus. While the camera is not light, it feels well weighted especially with big lenses like the 70-200 2.8L. After taking 2,000 pictures with it in Costa Rica, I am in love.

Great Deal on a Perfect Camera

I majored in photography at SIU back in the seventies. I used Nikons so I know what a quality camera is supposed to be. This camera is absolutely a high quality camera. This is the best deal on this camera you are going to find. Adorama did an excellent job for me. The camera is flawless. Can't tell it is refurbished. I ordered it Tuesday and got it on Thursday. So far it works perfectly. Thank you Adorama. The money I saved will go for another lens from Adorama.

Definitely worth it!!!

I'm really loving this camera. I previously bought a Rebel XT refurbished and it is still in great working order. There are only two things that bother me about the camera. One is the weight, but that is simply because it's a better built camera than the Xt. I will just have to get used to it. The other is the size of the handgrip. I do have small hands, so I can't quite get my hand around the grip while maintaining a good hold on the camera. Both issues are solved with a handstrap. This is a great step up for those who are looking for more in their camera.

Looks like new

The refurbished 40D is my entry to the world of DSLR. For my hands, the size of the body and layout of the controls feel great. Based on the great condition of the camera I received, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend refurbished/recertified Canon products to my friends.

Just like new

Bought this camera about a month ago and have already shot 2000+ photo's with it. Even though it's a refurbish, you can't tell and I would defenitely buy a refurb again. Love the camera. Image Quality is great, low light performance is good too.

Pinch Me, I'm Dreaming!!! Awesome Kit!!

I'm a serious amateur photographer and absolutely love this camera and lens. This kit was everything I expected from Adorama and more. The 40D has a great feel in the hand. It's solidly constructed, rugged, and durable. It has terrific flexibility to help you get that perfect shot in almost any lighting condition. A lot of "bang for the buck" with this kit. There are better lens choices in the Canon family, but the 28-135 give you a good foundation to start from. I tried out the Rebel series but they always felt like they were missing something and didn't feel that great in my hand. I have shot film SLRs for years and have been waiting for the DSlRs to come into my price range. This kit fits my wallet just right! I have experience with buying refurb computers and I would not hesitate to buy a Canon refurb again from Adaorama. I seriously could not tell that it was a refurb. It looked brand new. Stop thinking about it, just buy it!! Now to save up for that 70-200, f2.8!!

great deal, but they have some lemons

I've bought 2 refurbished or "recertified" 40d w/ 28-135 IS USM lens kits from Adorama so far. The first one had dust particles on the inner element of the lens so I always needed to do a lot of spot correction on my photos, plus the camera had pixels that misfired in low light. Any good software will detect this and automatically correct it when you upload your photos though. But it's an annoyance so i replaced it with another kit. The second package seems to be better, no more pixel misfires and the lens has no dust. but the built in flash seems to be stuck and won't pop up. It's pretty much a worthless flash anyway if you have a speedlight. but just be prepared to examine your camera and lens closely when you get it to make sure it doesn't have any issues. Adorama does have a nice warranty on these so it's worth the risk.

decent slr

I am a new guy in slr world but the 40D makes it easy to start with. I take good pictures as soon as I got the camera. After a long time with my point and shoot, slr quite a big and heavy in your hands but its worth to hold it, if you really want to play with the slr. The refurb price is good too.

Excellent Combination

The 40D is very well made and has great low light photo capability. It is well suited for almost all applications and the lens and camera are both made in Japan which is still considered one of the finest Countries for precision assembly. Many competitive products are made elsewhere and do not share the Canon's reliability record. The lens focuses very quickly and has excellent sharpness, contrast and is pretty free of distortions at the limits of its range. The camera has 3 custom memories great flexibility and the Canon line has a very comprehensive set of available lenses.

Just like New!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought this for bird photography and sports. This is my first DSLR. I chose the referbished over a Canon XSI due to the price was only slightly more and this camera is much better built. You cannot see the difference in pixals between the two. This camera has exceeded my expectations. I have not found anything I don't like!

Very nice!

This was an upgrade from the xti. Although much the same with regards to functions, there are some advantages. Not sure if it was worth the extra money, but little manipulation in CS4. Biggest con is that I always seem to get errors when transferring of images to my brand new computer. It must take 30 minutes to transfer 10 images! Hopefully this is a Vista 64-bit thing.

Better than expected

I won't comment on the features since I'm assuming most people have done their homework on this camera. I mainly wanted to comment on the refurbished quality...I honestly can't tell the camera is refurbished! Looks and works like new. Both my wife and I got one and both are what you'd expect from a "new" box. I've had it for a week, used every function and taken over 400 photos without a glitch. I'd recommend to a friend wanting to save a few hundred $$$'s.Note: These cameras come straight from Canon (to Adorama). [...]

Perfect Condition

I'm a semi pro and absolutely love this camera. Very customizable through the CF settings. It's solid and noticeably larger than the digital rebels. The auto white balance is actually not bad most of the time, although I always set custom when on location making money with it. My camera had under 200 actuations on it when I received it. That being said, it was flawless!! I would not hesitate to buy a canon refurb, I seriously think they are better than new! Think about it, I would suspect that most new camera's come off an assembly line and are not checked. Only on occasion do they pull one off for quality control, but these camera's are gone over thoroughly by a tech to ensure that every part is in perfect working order and calibrated properly. The lens was the same deal, perfect!! Don't think any longer, just buy it!!

I'll review the "Refurbished" part of this sale since there are plenty of reviews for the camera elsewhere. This was received in official Canon packaging, and arrived in the exact condition as if it were brand new, with the small exception that the box was a different Canon box and had a 'refurbished' sticker on it. Otherwise, the camera and lens were SPOTLESS. I immediately reformatted a card in it and took a picture- it was numbered 0020 - so this camera had no more use on it than a brand ...
