High quality images, large enough for 30x45" wall prints

I bought this camera a couple of years ago to replace my 5D mark II. I like the 50 MP images, I can shoot with a wide prime and crop later in photoshop if need be. A definite improvement over the older 5D I had. The only negative on this camera is if using it to shoot video it auto shuts off after 15-20 minutes, shoots 1080 P not 4K but the built in mic does pretty good.

Awesome camera

I brought my 5dsr last November 2020 . It functions flawlessly for still photos and action shots with great detail.

Great pictures

I've used Canons for 50 years and this camera exceeded my expectations. Great picture quality. And the price is outstanding for the resolution. Fast focusing. the ISO is limited and could be higher, but I bought this camera mainly for landscapes, so that isn't a real concern for me.

Best use is landscape photography, portraits and large-scale printing

Years ago this camera was in the top tier for performance and advanced technology. However, Canon has failed to keep the camera updated and it has now fallen behind current innovation and has become technically obsolete for following action photography or high-resolution video. However, due to the camera’s ability for high level resolution still photography, the camera is still well suited for such use as landscape photography, portraits and large-scale printing.

Amazed by canon

I have another camera but buying this one really made me happy. I took it on a hike to see how the photos would come out and man. I cant even put into words how happy I am with the outcome. I took some landscape and also I brought with me a macron lens that realty took out all the details of the flowers and bugs I saw so yeah I don’t have anything bad to say about this camera. I know a photographer had said this was meant for studio photography but I think you can make this word for any occasion with the right lighting. Also the portraits were amazing. I use it to work and for play.

Game Changer

I have been working with this body since it's release about five years ago and I am very happy with it. I bought it while working as a portrait photographer and have been very pleased with it's abilities. I had been shooting professionally for 20 years using the 5d and the 5d mk2 but this upgrade allows you so much more options in post with the many different crops that can give one image two looks, A full wide shot and a beautifully detailed cropping of the same image. Add the ability to record simultaneously record to two cards and you can say goodbye to image loss fears.

The Best of the Best!

I bought my 5DS-R when they first came out and though I use a 6D for regular work, when I'm doing serious photo-work, I take out the 5DS-R and you can tell. The photos are a few steps-above, most likely because of the Anti-alias cancelling. I'm thinking about getting a second 5DS-R before they stop producing this masterpiece!

Dynamic range

I bought 5dsr and tested in the field. If you are looking to shoot sunset, sunrise or night photography, this is not the best camera. When you open shadow, it is almost unusable noise. Best for details but too bad, I can't recommend. Don't buy it, until they improve noise quality.

Simply Amazing

I bought this a few weeks ago and I love it like I loved the 5D2. I have had the 5D2, 5D3, and now the 5Ds. I love the extra pixels for cropping to frame images. Most of my images I could show at 100% with clarity. The quality is even rather good at ISO 3200. While at that ISO I cannot crop to 100%, the full or nearly full image is nice.

The EOS 5DS R & Canon’s 24mm Tilt Shift Lens - Architectural Rig

The EOS 5DS R when coupled to Canon’s excellent 24 mm Tilt Shift lens makes a perfect architectural photography camera kit. We print poster size and larger prints for trade shows. The detail that the EOS 5DS R sensor provides are truly breathtaking.

Exceptional Camera

I've been eyeing this camera ever since it came out in 2015. It has gotten more affordable in recent months so I splurged and I've been very pleased with its performance. I do quite a bit of copy artworks in a studio environment. The 50.6 mp enables me to capture details in the artworks like never before without further resizing. I am also into birding photography and am excited that with the generous cropping allowed, I am able to capture images of birds with such sharpness, detail and clarity. I am sold.

20,000+ shots and counting

Been using the 5DS R for over three years. Paired with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM for portraits, landscape, solar eclipse and sports shots. On the fly AF adjustments, ISO, f-stop and shutter speed for sports have been incredibly simple and I can do it all from the eyepiece. The resulting sharpness of the photos is stunning. Not the best body for indoor sports photography (drive speed, upper ISO but for everything else I think it is extremely hard to beat. 8,000+ of my shots are indoor sports and with the f/2.8 lenses I am more than satisfied because the resolution is nothing short of amazing. I have printed photos up to 24" x 36" with great results. I only use manual mode, so I can't really comment on the Av/Tv/P modes.

I really like the High Resolution.

I bought this because of the high resolution it provided, I already own the Canon 1DX and 5D Mark III. I have been using the 5D SR exclusively since I bought it. I am not concerned about what people say about the noise at high ISO levels, I have been using it at 500 ISO and haven't needed to go any higher yet. This is a fantastic camera.

5DSis a joy to photograph with

This is my 4th Canon SLR and my favorite of the bunch. Fast response, lightweight, and so much more data per frame. Wish it was WiFi capable and had GPS. That would make this model perfect for my use.

It could be a perfect DSLR, but it's disappointing

I've been a Canon user for the past decade, I've switched a lot of bodies and finally I've sold my back-up 6D (because of its rubbish AF system which I bought almost 5 years ago and only kept the 5Ds which I bought 3 years ago. After using it for 3 years as my main camera for advertising, fashion and event photography, with only L glass (16-35 f4L IS, 24-70 f2.8L II and a 70-200 f2.8L IS), I've a few pros and cons. Although it was launched in 2015, it still is the highest megapixel count full-frame camera on the market. It is absolutely amazing to have such a high megapixel count, it really helps a lot if you work in the advertising industry. It has a huge potential to crop or for huge prints. After using my 6D for almost 2 years I decided to buy the 5Ds and after that the 6D's 20 megapixels looked like a joke. The 5Ds began to open the door to endless possibilities. It has great build quality, it feels really solid in hand and it's comfortable to hold (I've big hands). I also dropped it once on concrete about a year ago and besides a small scuff, there was noting else, it works perfectly fine. I haven't tested it much in rain, but I'm confident to shoot with it in bad conditions. The AF system is decent (not so good, not so bad). It struggles in low light and sometimes it also struggles in harsh daylight when I'm trying to focus continuously on a model's face. The 6D is much better in low light due to its -3EV central AF point. Some cheaper modern mirrorless systems do a far better job in keeping continuos AF. Video recording is a huge disappointment. It only records 1080/30p maximum, although it could've had at least 1080/60p... Also the headphone jack has been removed, although it was on the 5D mark 3 which the 5Ds is based (why Canon?). It could've had a lot of potential to shoot video, but Canon decided to cripple its functions because it would have affected the sales of its more expensive cameras. It would love to shoot photo & video with the same camera, but I can't. Dynamic range is also a joke when you compare it with a Nikon/Sony camera. ISO performance is decent enough, I usually shoot with 6400 max at events and the results are usable. One drawback to the 50mpx sensor is the file size. One raw file is about 60-70MB. I usually go through a whole 64GB CF card in a full day of shoot. You need a powerful workstation to process those files and a lot of storage. Also if you plan to shoot small raw files (12mpx) to save up some space, that's highly inefficient, beucase the file size is about 30MB (goes up to 35MB in some cases), which is also A LOT (1/2 size for only 1/4 of the resolution). One full raw file from my 6D (20mpx) was about 30MB too, and there isn't much improvement in raw quality (dynamic range and color bit) on the 5Ds, compared to the 6D. I honestly don't understand why 12mpx raw files are so big. One final dissatisfaction is that the 5Ds hasn't had any major firmware updates in the last 3 years. My camera works absolutely the same since I got it. Fuji cameras get a lot of firmware updates for example, which highly enhance the potential of the camera. When I purchased the 5Ds, I was really hoping that I could get a firmware update that could at least boost my video fps recording to 1080/60fps.

Camera has a lot of great options for astrophotography

I recommend it for astro. I have been doing astro for four years and would call myself an intermediate practitioner. The best use I have found with this device is for star scapes or star fields. The full frame capability allows for a much wider FOV when imaging deep sky objects or even just star fields. I was pleasantly surprised to note that it also does in camera timelapse movies! The wide variety of setting one can use is handy. I expect timelapse movies to be easier than the old Photoshop hassle, but we'll see.

A GREAT camera

I love my 5D SR camera. IT yields stunning images. My only ccomplaint is that it does not handle noise all that well at high ISO settings, but for studio or daylight work that is not an issue anyway.

Great body for me.

I purchased this body as a back up to my 5Dm4, which I also love. But I wanted to get something with slightly different capabilities. I'm really glad I did. While the Mark 4 is great all around, this one gives me more information to work with in post. The image starts out larger, and more detailed so I love starting with more information. I can always crop or subtract. It's understandably a bit slower. I almost always shoot off the tripod at lower ISO's with this body. If I'm going to hand shoot, or need higher ISO I'll use the Mark 4. For me that makes the 5DSR my go to especially for landscape. And both bodies back each other up regardless of what I'm doing. Hope this is helpful.

Completely Blown Away !!

I purchased the camera in January 2018. I have the 1dx, 1dx mark 2, 5d mark 4 and now the 5dsr. I purchased it with the intent as option for shooing senior portraits. It has now become my primary camera for portraits and weddings. The clarity and detail of the camera blowns me away as well as my clients. From a portrait photographer stand point I can not recommend a better camera.

Comprehensive review of a great versatile camera

Lenses matter with this camera. 50 mpix is unforgiving. I have used a wide range of Canon's best and it shows what lenses you have if you pixel peep (however, all your lenses will still perform better on this camera than any other Canon DSLR. Handling: Coming from the 5DII/5DIII you will find this camera body very familiar – all the way down to the battery. Its a big camera even for a DSLR, but not excessive. I upgraded from a 5D. this camera has better color rendition and sharpness. I can set the camera on TV, ISO 6400, shutter speed 1/8000 and stop a hummingbird wings. The detail is amazing. I shoot primarily landscape and wildlife. I am ok with the iso. I really like the megapixels. For my type of photograpy, this camera in perfect.

Canon 5Ds DSLR
Both the Canon 5Ds DSLR and Canon 5DS R feature a newly-designed 50.6MP resolution 35mm CMOS sensor along with dual Digic 6 processors allows for some of the sharpest images ever captured by a digital SLR. The difference between the two cameras is that the 5DS R has a low-pass filter effect cancellation, which effectively improves the sensor's sensitivity. On the surface, the Canon 5DS and 5DS-R appear to be identical to the existing Canon flagship model, Canon 5D Mark III. Both models borrow the advanced programmable auto-ISO sensitivity from the 7D Mark II providing increased control over ISO sensitivity before having to stop down. With its built-in intervalometer, create time-lapses and long exposures to capture everything from an incoming storm to light trails from cars on night-time cityscape.

The Canon 5Ds is optimized for photographers where workflow time is crucial. If getting your images off of your computer and into your clients hands is most important, your needs will probably be best met by the Canon 5DS. No matter which camp you fall under, both offerings are truly representative of what we’ve come to expect from a flagship model with the Canon name on it.

Canon 5DS Key Features:

  • Full-frame 35mm 50.6MP CMOS sensor
  • EOS Scene Detection System
  • 252-zone TTL metering

  • ISO range 100-6400
  • User-selectable shutter release lag time

More In-Depth:

Here's hands-on look at the Canon 5DS:

Let's take a closer look at Canon 5DS.

Canon 5DS lens view

50.6 Megapixels, Superior Performance

The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R cameras offer the highest resolution capture in the history of EOS: a Canon designed and manufactured, full-frame 50.6 Megapixel CMOS sensor. It captures 8712 x 5813 effective pixels, delivering images with wide dynamic range and an incredible level of realism perfect for large-scale printing, fine art, significant crops and any number of other high-end applications. A new Picture Style setting, called Fine Detail, helps emphasize fine edges, patterns and textures. Thanks to the dual DIGIC 6 sensors, photographs and HD movies are captured and processed with remarkable speed.

Canon 5DS vs. Canon 5DS R

For most users, professional and advanced enthusiasts alike, the EOS 5DS will be the ideal choice, and is suited for a wide range of applications, including studio, landscape, gallery and fine-art photography, and more. The EOS 5DS R is a specialized version and is intended for photographers looking to capture the maximum amount of detail possible, and is best suited for landscape, commercial work, or other specialized types of applications. Since the EOS 5DS R offers the LPF cancellation effect, the possibility of moiré and color artifacts is greater than with the EOS 5DS.

Standard on every EOS SLR (with the exception of the Canon EOS 5DS R) the low-pass filter eliminates false colors and moiré patterns that can be recorded by the camera’s sensor. While the LPF's purpose is to minimize the moiré and false color artifacting inherent in digital imaging, it does reduce resolving power of the sensor. The EOS 5DS R camera's LPF cancellation effect delivers greater sharpness and finer detail, useful in specialized situations, but the possibility of moiré and color artifacting is greater however. Fortunately, there are methods to help eliminate these effects while capturing and during post-processing.

Canon 5DS Rear View

Anti-Flickers

Anti-Flicker, which first debuted in the advanced consumer level 7D Mark II, compensates for flickering/cycling light to deliver consistent exposure and color when you're in continuous shooting mode. 1.3x and 1.6x crop shooting lets you shoot as if you were shooting with an APS-H (1.3x) sensor at 30.5MP, or APS-C (1.6x) at 19.6MP. A useful way to effectively extend the range of long lenses, the viewfinder shows a masked or overlaid view with an outline showing the cropped area when shooting in this mode. You can also change aspect ratios.

From the Manufacturer
Marking a new standard in high-resolution digital SLR photography, the Canon EOS 5DS camera shatters the status quo with a new 50.6 Megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor. Perfect for commercial and fine art photography, or any other application that calls for extremely high-resolution, the EOS 5DS is the ultimate combination of EOS performance and ultra-high megapixel capture. It features an advanced, 61-point High Density Reticular AF system that includes 41 cross-type AF points and EOS iTR AF for precise AF in numerous situations. An anti-flicker function helps provide consistent exposure and color during continuous shooting under certain lighting conditions, while a built-in bulb timer and intervalometer expands creative opportunities without the need for an additional remote control. A refined mirror control mechanism reduces vibration and a Time Release Lag setting minimizes camera shake for sharp image capture when using mirror lock-up. With EOS performance and 50.6 Megapixel Capture, the EOS 5DS revolutionizes high-resolution photography!

New 50.6 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS sensor
The EOS 5DS camera features Canon's newest full-frame CMOS sensor. At 50.6 Megapixels, it's the highest resolution sensor in the history of EOS. It captures 8712 x 5813 effective pixels, delivering images with an unprecedented level of realism perfect for large-scale commercial printing, fine art, significant crops and any number of other high-end applications. Thanks to this amazing sensor, engineered to work in concert with dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, the EOS 5DS is a remarkable, high-resolution camera with impressive performance.

New Fine Detail mode in Picture Style
Taking advantage of its sensor's high-resolution capturing power, the EOS 5DS camera has a new Picture Style called Fine Detail mode. Fine Detail emphasizes fine edges and patterns or textures by setting the camera's Sharpness sub-settings, fineness and threshold to their minimum and by lowering contrast settings as well. Prioritizing minute details in the image allows for better gradations, more detailed textures and fine edges for smoother, more polished photographs.

EOS Scene Detection System with RGB+IR Metering Sensor
The EOS 5DS camera has an amazing iSA Intelligent Scene Analysis system that employs an independent RGB+IR light sensor with approximately 150, 000-pixel resolution. This sensor enables Canon's Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system (iTR AF) that detects and tracks subjects, automatically switching the AF point to optimize tracking. With new tracking algorithms tailored to recognize faces and colors, this system serves as a brilliant foundation to the EOS 5DS's AF system.

61-point High Density Reticular AF
For fast, precise AF with sophisticated tracking performance, the EOS 5DS camera has an advanced, 61-point High Density Reticular AF system with up to 41 cross-type AF points. The EOS 5DS's AF system is incredibly sensitive to changes in composition, making adjustments quickly to help ensure consistent, sharp AF. A new RGB+IR AF (with approximately 150, 000 pixels) sensor monitors subject motion and Canon's iTR Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system synchronizes the active AF point with the subject's motion, helping to ensure that AF precision is maintained. With focus modes dedicated to the particulars of the shooting environment, the EOS 5DS realizes a level of focus accuracy befitting its 50.6 Megapixel sensor.

Advanced Mirror control mechanism and shutter release time lag
The camera shake that occurs from the impact of an SLR's mirror can leave blurred details in the recorded image. This effect is magnified when working with a super high-resolution sensor like the one found in the EOS 5DS camera. To counter the effects of conventional, spring-driven SLR mirrors, the EOS 5DS features a newly developed Mirror Vibration Control system. The camera's mirror is not controlled by springs but instead is driven by a small motor and cams. This system suppresses the impact typical of the camera's mirror, significantly reducing impact and its effects on the image. A new Time Release Lag setting, easily accessed on the EOS 5DS's menu system, offers added protection against camera shake by setting the shutter release time intentionally longer so the camera does not begin the exposure until after the impact of the camera's mirror has diffused.

1.3x and 1.6x crop shooting
For still photography, the EOS 5DS camera features the flexibility of a cropping feature that extends the shooting effect 1.3x and 1.6x. With 50.6 Megapixel capture, cropped shots are possible with plenty of resolution to spare. Images recorded at 1.3x (APS-H) are approximately 30.5 Megapixels (6768 x 4512) Large/Fine JPEG, while images recorded at 1.6x (APS-C) are approximately 19.6 Megapixels (5424 x 3616) Large/Fine JPEG. Particularly useful in extending the range of telephoto lenses, the crop function also improves the EOS 5DS's subject tracking capability with almost the entire frame covered with AF points. Image cropping can be displayed in the viewfinder either masked or overlaid with an outline showing the cropped area and in Live View shooting the image is cropped by the effect chosen. Aspect ratios can also be defined, with the EOS 5DS shooting in 1:1, 4:3 and 16:9 ratios, in addition to the default 3:2.

Intelligent Viewfinder II
The EOS 5DS camera's Intelligent Viewfinder II makes it easy to both shoot, change and confirm camera settings and shooting modes all without looking away from the viewfinder. Displaying approximately 100% of the composition, the viewfinder can show settings like shooting mode, exposure level, white balance, drive mode, AF operation, metering mode, recording format, an electronic level and more. All of this information can be displayed by or superimposed easily over the image for review while shooting and multiple views are customizable through the EOS 5DS's simple user interface.

Full HD 30p movie capability
The EOS 5DS camera is a sophisticated movie-making machine, capturing Full HD movies with numerous manual controls at multiple frame rates and compressions. Featuring movie capture and manual controls, the EOS 5DS's shutter button can be programmed to capture still images when pressed during movie shooting.

Time Lapse Movie function
An EOS first, the EOS 5DS camera even has a time-lapse movie feature that takes still photos at set intervals and joins them to create a silent movie. Perfect for showing the moving clouds across the sky, growth of a plant, changes in scenery, the flow of people walking and more, the EOS 5DS's Time Lapse Movie function creates professional-quality movies, in camera, without the need for a computer, saving precious time when out in the field.

High-speed continuous shooting
The EOS 5DS camera can continuously shoot up to 5.0 frames per second. Thanks to its speedy dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors plus its enhanced shutter mechanism and mirror drive, the EOS 5DS is capable of capturing full 50.6 Megapixel images at high speed with superb quality. This sophisticated balance between high pixel count and shooting speed ensures the EOS 5DS is always ready for the next shot.

3.2" ClearView II LCD Monitor
The 3.2-inch ClearView II LCD monitor has 1, 040, 000 dots, anti-reflective construction and features Canon's ClearView technology for a bright, sharp display in any number of shooting situations. It's ideal for reviewing settings and images, as well as for shooting in Live View mode. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections, 24 sections, or 9 sections with diagonals, as can the electronic level, which helps ensure accurate level by displaying roll. For image review, the EOS 5DS camera has a dedicated Magnify/Reduce button for zooming in or out (up to 16x) simply by pressing the button and turning the Main Dial. Images can be protected or erased quickly, individually or in batches and slideshows can be created with some or all images and can be sequenced by date, folders, movies, stills or rating. A clear and simple feature guide found in the camera's menu provides detailed reference information whenever needed.

Quick Control Screen
In addition to a conventional Quick Control screen, the EOS 5DS camera features a Quick Control button that enables the photographer to quickly and easily access the settings critical for the task at hand. The user can specify features to display, as well as their location and size on the screen. With the level of customization the Custom Quick Control screen offers, the EO S 5DS can work perfectly with the style of any photographer.
