genius - one of a kind
I have a pro DSLR and then I have the best smartphone camera in the world. I needed something in between. I tried pretty much all of the newly released compacts and 3/4. Price was not an issue for me and I'm always looking for something newer and better. I did not expect at all to end up with the G12, which I considered an "old" model. To my surprise it turned out to be the winner. Here is why: - best COLOR BALANCE in all lighting situation - fast AF - sharp, dimensional pictures - good high ISO performance - Image Stabilization gives you those added stops that make hand held shots in low light possible - rugged, care-free - size and weight feels good in the hand - smaller chip size allows for real macro shots, sharp focus for objects as close as 1.5 inches (try that with any of the other models claiming macro) - correctly color calibrated and sharp LCD - battery charge last - awesome manual controls and dedicated dials - did I say, most accurate COLOR BALANCE in all lighting situations - it's FUN to use! It produced one keeper after another. I'm really impressed and happy with this camera. Awesome.

Poor video function
I like the excellent still image quality. But it's video function is too poor, too poor. How can you shoot the video without the zoom and auto focus function???

I purchased the G12 for picture taking while hiking. The optical viewfinder a must outdoors. I put an infrared filter over the lens thinking to use the optical viewfinder. I was surprised to see the infrared image on the LCD display. I took several pictures and they came out great. (Used a photo editing program to convert the image to monochrome.) The camera even focused correctly on the longer wavelength infrared. I also have a Canon 60D. The 60D does not work with infrared.
I HAVE MY CAMERA SINCE DECEMBER 17, 2010. I NOTICED THAT I ALWAYS HAD A LITTLE PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS, I THOUGH IT WAS ME. THEN ON AND OFF, SINCE THE BEGINNING, I HAD A BLANK SCREEN BUT AFTER FEW SECONDS IT WORKED NO PROBLEM. THEN ONE DAY IN MAY IT JUST STOP WORKING THE SCREEN WENT BLANK AND THE FEW TIMES IT WORKED IT GAVE ME A DISTORTED IMAGE! MY CAMERA NEVE EVER HAD A FALL. FOR THE PRICE VERY DISAPPOINTED. I WILL LOOK FOR ANOTHER BRAND NAME.
Incredibly easy to use with excellent results. Perfect underwater camera with housing gives professional results even for a novice
The request for this review came very soon after purchasing this camera used. Have really only spent one weekend with it, and haven't looked at any of the shots on anything larger than the camera's LCD. However, in either full auto mode or any combination of manual/auto settings, it's been easy to use, understand and snap away.
After years of carrying half a camera store over my shoulder whenever traveled or went to one of my kids' school concerts, I was looking for a "pocketable" camera. I have never owned a small point and shoot before and the idea of being able to shoot RAW and still use off-camera flash made the G12 very attractive to me. The fact that it shoots halfway decent video was plus, too. I recently took a trip to Texas and bought this used G12 to bring along. I also brought a 50D and shot several scenes with both cameras. Clearly, the shots from the 50D were superior, but for non-commercial use, in most cases, I'd be perfectly comfortable leaving the pro gear in the bag and sticking the G12 in my pocket. I also liked the fact that I was comfortable using the G12 while walking alone in some urban settings were I wouldn't have dared use one of my high-end kits. The placement of ISO, Exposure Compensation and Shooting Mode dials is excellent. These features are right where a seasoned photographer would expect to find them. The dials all feel solid and provide a nice "click-in" feel as they are advanced. The manual focus system is frustrating, but the autofocus is adequate if your subject isn't moving. Image sharpness suffers significantly below f/5.6. Having a maximum aperture of only f/8.0, the G12 has a very limited usable aperture range. The Auto ISO feature is very good - VERY good - it makes up for the limitations with the usable aperture range.
Just got it, still learning but definitely thrilled with the quality and the incredibly quick delivery time.
So far I enjoy the G12, specially when travel with my child. It's light, and still takes beautiful pictures.
With fast moving children, this camera fits the bill. cathes great action and color.
This is a first camera for my wife and a " carry-everywhere camera for me. There are times when I don't want to carry my D5100 w/18-200mm lens, but I almost always want to have a camera with me. This is a very nice point-and-shoot with lots of controls available without going through meunus. The image quality is very good for the sensor size, meaning no problems at all with moderatley cropped 8x10's. You can probably go larger.
After 2 years: - lens door mechanism broke - massive dust intrusion in the optical viewfinder
