Canon PowerShot G16

The Canon PowerShot G16 is a premium compact camera that is the latest in the G series, a popular choice among experienced photographers seeking a small, versatile camera with familiar manual as well as automatic controls. It replaces the G15, which was introduced last year, and looks almost identical to its predecessor.

What's New: New to the G16 are an all-new, faster DIGIC 6 image processor and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. Canon is also claiming significant improvements in autofocus speed and accuracy. Astrophotographers may be interested in the new Star Nightscape, Star Trails and Star Time-Lapse Movie capture modes. Also new are a series of artistic filters such as Art Bold and Art Vivid, and handheld HDR Scene mode automatically combines multiple shots of a scene at different exposures, merges them and creates a single image with improved detail from shadow to highlights.

The Canon G16's 12MP sensor, which has an ISO sensitivity range as high as 12,800, and 24-140mm f/1.8-2.8 (35mm equivalent) zoom lens and 3-inch, 922k LCD monitor and optical viewfinder remain unchanged. Canon is now claiming a top burst rate of 9.3fps, down slightly from the G16's 10fps spec. Canon says the camera can capture up to 522 shots at 9.3fps without interruption when using high-speed memory cards. 6-way image stabilization assures shake-free images even in some low-light situations.

DSLR control in a compact camera

As with its predecessors, the Canon G16's control options and layout are strongly influenced by DSLR design, and the camera can be a fine complement to your larger rig. Users can choose all-auto modes or the same P/A/S/M exposure options found on every DSLR. The camera has a hot shoe mount and accepts the entire Canon line of Speedlite flash units. It is also one of a handful of compact cameras with a built-in optical viewfinder that zooms along with the zoom lens.

The Canon G16 captures HD video up to 1080p at 60fps.

Finally, a greast camera

from Washington  -  Photo Enthusiast

In an attempt to replaced an ancient and beloved Canon A540 that started chewing through batteries, in the past five years I've bought and returned or sold just about everything except the Canon Mark III! No camera is perfect, I know, but I wanted a solid all-around camera. This one comes the closest, so I'm keeping it. No funky colors, no white balance issues, no soft focus, no fixed non-zoom lens, no gigantic removable lenses that mean it won't fit in your purse. The pictures look as you expect them to, no surprises. You can fiddle with the controls, but auto mode is hard to beat. Just be sure to put the picture style to "Vivid" and you'll be happy - without a picture style applied, the colors can look a little washed out. The only other con I can think of is I wish it were weatherproofed.

Canon G-16 Digital Camera

from Texas  -  Photo Enthusiast

Bought this for my wife to use for grandkids activities, sports, concerts etc..It takes awesome photos and the High Definition Movies are great. The clarity, sharpness and color on both video and photos are the best we have taken with any of the many digital cameras we have owned. I do not know of anything that I would consider as negative on the camera.

Great DSLR Back-Up

from Hillsboro, OR  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought the G16 for travel and as a casual walking around camera when I don't want lug a DSLR and lenses. It takes great pics and is easy to use. I especially like the customizable pre-sets as well as the auto-bracketing for HDR. The fast lens is a great plus, too.And you can customize two buttons to save you from going into menus for your choice of functions.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Does the Canon G-16 camera have a "flip screen/" ?
FLORENCE G  The Canon Power Shot G 16 does not have a flip screen, but so far I haven't missed this feature. This camera just takes great pictures whichever way you use it.
Dieter H  thank you everyone for the help. ?
TED J  Hi Dieter H, my name is Ted, and I am a Pro photographer in California. I bought a Canon power shot G 16 to use as a go to backup camera that is small enough to carry in a bag but has a lot of big options and features. I also bought the 272 tilt/head. It is an excellent choice for this camera. I also put on the front the Canon lens barrel extension with a thread on filter. This is an incredible small camera, it has almost as much features as my 5D Mark three. It's an excellent camera for lowlight photography. Video in this camera is very good also. The camera has a number of special features built right into it that most cameras don't have. Can't say enough about the small camera, have recommended to a lot of my photography buddies. Hope this answers your question. Good shooting. Ted
Dieter H  Does it have GPS built in like the Panasonic?
BILL R  No GPS. But it is a very good camera. I love it over my DSR
