Questions & Answers

neil a : will this work with a canon 5d2?STAN M : It may fit with modifications, I could not find any info on it, so probably not.
Shopper : does this work with a 7d?PHILIP N : No, it is specific to the 5D mark IVICTORIA G : I don't believe it is compatible with the 7d.CLIFFORD M : I do not know if it will work on 7D ???JOSHUA L : No. 7d does not have an interchangable focusing screen. To turn on the grid you just go in to settings.MARK B : Focusing screens are created to fit specific camera models. A 5D screen won't work with a 7D body.JOHN S : I bought it for my 5d and it worked. I don't know if it works for the 7d.DANIEL P : No, the 7D is not recommended for user replacement. To get this grid on a 7D it's actually built in and superimposed, check the manual for how to turn it on.JAE H : Considering they have completely different sensor size it will NOT work with 7D. Also 7D has grid screen built-in and it can be switched on or off. So you don't need to buy this...Jason R : This screen is for a full frame viewfinder, so it won't fit the 7d. I believe you need the Ef-D, which is the same matte grid screen, but for smaller sensor cameras
Jun P : Is this work for 5d with F/2.8 lens or slower lens?DAVID G : Yes, works with any EF mount lens.PAUL G : Yes, it works great. The viewfinder is pretty small, so a grid is helpful in keeping the picture from tilting too much to the left or right especially with landscape photography. Nobody likes a cockeyed picture. It can be fixed in photoshop or lightroom, but why not do it in camera, right?CLIFFORD M : I have 2- 2.8 L lens works fine.ROBERT E : Put this on my 5d and like it. I have several lens, canon and tamron lens and it works great great on all of them.DAVID O : Canon Focusing Screen Ee-D works fine with all my Canon 5D and all Canon Lenses, 24-105 f/4, 100 f2.8, 17-40 f/4, 70-200 f/4. The grid is a great aid in helping "level" and compose my shots with my aging vision / bifocals where the view finder for me is just not quite as sharp and clear as it use to be. This really helps. Wish this had been standard like on my Canon 7D and future 5D Mark III.GLENN G : I use it with f2.8, f4, and f5.6 lenses with no issues. I do not notice any difference in brightness compared to the standard 5d screen. Autofocus is unaffected by the use of this screen. As far as manual focus, the most difficult lens I regularly manually focus is my Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 II. Being both slow and a super-wideangle, it should be the most difficult to manually focus, but I still have no issues. The grid is great to have. My wife has a similar screen on her 40d and she also loves it.MARC Y : Yes yagmarcJOHN S : I installed the Canon Focusing Screen Ee-D on my Canon 5d. It works fine with all my lenses. My slowest lenses at f/4.SUSAN J : Both my lens are f/4, so I don't know. However, I see no reason why it wouldn't work. By the way, I LOVE the focusing screen! It was very easy to install.PAUL H : I've used this screen with my EF24-105 f4 lens and it works perfectly. I have a similar screen in my 5D MkII which I've used it with an EF100-400 f4.5-5.6 lens. Again, perfect results. You should have no problems.FRED D : The speed of the lens has no effect on the focus screen. The only difference between this screen and the standard 5D MkII screen is the faint horizontal and vertical lines that help you align the horizon or vertical line of the photograph. I find it very useful for landscape and architectural photographs.STEPHEN S : Ec-D is for the Canon EOS 1 (film SLR) Ee-D is for the Canon 5D Eg-D is for the Canon 5D Mk II Focusing Screens are designed to work with the camera body. Will you experience any difficulties using the Ee-D in your 5D and lens that is f/2.8 or slower? No.TAD B : Used on my 5D, this screen works just fine with my f4.0, f3.5, and f1.8 lenses. (If you are concerned with brightness, I haven't noticed it being different than the original screen.)MARK B : This screen will work just fine with a 2.8 or any other Canon EF lens.JAE H : Currently i am using it with 24-105 24/1.4II 35/1.4 No problem so far.

Well worth it!

It is so useful when trying to make sure the scene in the viewfinder is level. It also saves time in PS, you don't have to rotate and crop the picture! The viewfinder seems a little brighter to me. There is a custom function for this screen, so there must be a difference. It is also not annoying in the viewfinder subtle but noticeable. Just do it!

Performs as advertised

I purchased the screen to aid in aligning horizontal and vertical lines in my photos. The subtle lines on the screen fit the bill. As others have said, they are very fine lines and sometimes difficult to see. They don't clutter the viewfinder and the autofocus points still light up.

Great for Manual Focus

Bought this one with the grid b/c Adorama was out of the non-grid version...and I'm happy I did. The grid lines are very subtle so as not to be distracting, but still useful when you want to level off your shot. Manual focus is where I needed this product to perform, and it does. Makes manual focusing a good bit easier (although not as good as the old split-prism style). Light loss after f4 as warned has been a non-issue for me. I rarely use my DOF preview so it just doesn't affect me. I'm using this on a 5D II, which I'm not sure your supposed to do. The metering behavior of the camera has changed a bit and is a little less reliable now, but not significantly different.

essential for architecture

If you want your lines to be straight a grid focus screen is indispensable. I have one on each of my cameras. The screen for the 5D is just as easy to install as it is on their other bodies. Cant go wrong.

Great help for landscape

Used a similar one on 40D, loves it. This one 5D works the same. Great help to me when shooting big landscape, seascape, cityscape, etc. Wish it had the little circle in the middle for manual focusing. Maybe that is asking too much? Don't know if any 3rd party has it...[...]

I would buy this product again

This product is a great aid in leveling as well as composition. I had it with my EOS-3 camera and was accustomed to using it. When I realized that the screen was available with the EOS-5D, I ordered one.

Great for copying art

Makes it much easier to prevent distortion when shooting items with straight edges, such as buildings and art. The item itself is extremely fragile, so handle with care; the tools and method of install are a bit difficult, and a bit archaic. Don't try to change screens when you're in a hurry. The grids are very subtle and don't distract when using the viewfinder, so this one works fine to leave it installed for day-to-day shooting. You can also use the grids to balance compositions.

This is a nice kit!!

Not only is the grid screen a valuble tool for doing precision camera leveling; this kit has good instructions, a solid case, a removal/insertion tool, and even a place for both the grid screen and the screen you remove. You never have to touch or lay either screen on anything but the holders provided.

Must have

These are a must have for me. Great for composition and keeping horizons and other lines straight. Canon provides a nice little kit for this too, with the tool. Piece of cake to install.

Exactly what I needed

One of the reasons I bought the Canon EOS 5D camera, besides the full-frame sensor etc, was the option to swap out focusing screens. I like using a grid for most situations, as a visual aid in composition. The lines are not distracting, I haven't noticed any impact on metering (you do have to switch C-Fn 00), and now it's my standard screen. Even though I'm always a bit apprehensive about monkeying around with the delicate bits of an expensive camera, the installation was really easy and took less than 5 minutes. Good instructions, provided tool.

Ok, but....

I though that dividing in thirds would have been easier with that grid but once I got the picture in the pc, I found out that it wasn't that precise! So, it only helps me to hold a straight horizon.

Grid Screen makes a better photographer

Makes it far easier to keep lines straight - I tend to tilt my camera and now horizons are straight without further manipulation.

Simple and effective composition tool

The Canon Focusing Screen EE-D is an inexpensive addition that makes photo composition much easier. Don't bother with a bubble level to make sure your horizons are horizontal, and your verticals are straight. This screen is easy to install and makes squaring your images a snap.

Canon 5D grid screen

By garybob

The grid screen lets me know what's level when I'm not.

The Ee-D grid-type focusing screen maximizes viewfinder brightness and is optimized for use with f/5.6 EF lenses and slower. It provides a 3-line (horizontal) by 6-line (vertical) grid for easier composition and horizon alignment.
