Questions & Answers

DEBBIE C : how does this camera work in low light without a tripod?DEKEN S : I'd say pretty well but, then, it's a subjective opinion and I've no idea how our opinion's may differ, nor what level of experience you may have. I've taken flash free shots of a 9-month-old on my kitchen floor in the evening with just the overhead lights on - they're certainly bright enough. Push the ISO up and the shots get grainy - as with any camera. How low do you consider 'low' light to be? With the metering options I've used, I've often found backlighted shots to be merely silhouettes, when I really wanted a shot of the silhouetted subject - but couldn't, in the moment, figure out how to force a flash. If you REALLY want low light shots, this may not be your best option. Then again, it may well be your best option for the money. I've been completely satisfied, and have taken evening shots outside, and those shots of my great-nephew in my kitchen... As ever, your mileage may vary - and I'm sorry I can't be more definitive. DekenGLENN W : This camera does as well in low light as other cameras in it's class. I also have a 1DX. The T5i can't even come close to the low noise performance of the 1DX but then it's also not a $6,500 camera. It has a very high ISO but it gets pretty noisy just like other comparable models. For very detailed comparisons, check out the reviews at dpreview. I always go to that site before making purchases. I bought this camera for my girlfriend after having a T4i of my own for the past year. Same sensor so same low light performance. If I had to do it all over again I would buy the same model. I do a lot of low light photography, shooting bands under available light so noise is a big deal to me. Some shots I just have to pass on because of the noise while others are winners. But for the money, I don't think you are going to be able to much better. I have the option of using the 1DX which has spoiled me for sure. But this camera does a fine job if you understand its limitations (and those of the other cameras in its class). The 18-135 lens is remarkably sharp and contrasty, much better than I ever expected for a package lens. I use it a lot on my T4i and my girlfriend uses the same one on her T5i. Great lens and camera body. You will absolutely love the touch screen, something I thought was more of a gimmick. Once you use it you will love it and will put your fingers all over every other camera you pick up, expecting it to have a touch screen as well. Even my 1DX doesn't have that.BLAKE T : For me being a total rookie fair with a steady hand and pretty good with a tripod.MARYANN F : I have had no problem with this camera in any type of lighting...but I would caution you about taking videos in low light situations. There is expanded ISO options for low light as well. There are enough custom settings and automatic scene settings on this camera for 99.9% of what a non-professional is going to be doing. If you have a somewhat steady hand and use the proper technique for holding the camera you should have only minimal problems with camera shake. The combo of T5i and 18-135 STM has image stabilization.STEVE B : It does really well. I'm a pro photographer but I bought this for my wife who likes to take photos in the evening. The high ISO capability along with the IS lens allows it to do a nice job under low light conditions.DONNA P : The camera gives good results hand holding at 1/15 second but no slower, thanks to the lens having optical stabilzation. The lens will be at full apeture. You still have to hold the camera steady and, when possible, brace yourself against something solid to minimize shake.CHARLES H : Selecting SCENIC and the NIGHT HANDHELD option seems to work quite well. Four exposures are taken with a single shutter button push. The camera then combines the four photos into one, correcting for areas of under- and over-exposure. Quite impressive!CHARLIE W : I could ask, how low is the light? You can go to ISO 3200, and higher with a custom function. I have used ASA 3200 for stage productions at high schools and with that lens I was not getting the results I really wanted. The lens is too slow. Better stage lights would have been helpful, also. The quick answer is it does OK, not great. I bought a faster lens and that makes a difference.
Shopper : can I buy body only ?PAUL R : Sure why not?CHARLES H : Hi, Yes you can! I almost did. This is my third Rebel. The first two came with the 18-55mm lens. So I have twice as many of those as I need. I noticed Adorama offered a bundle of the camera with a 18-135mm IS lens along with a 16GB card and also a camera bag. For the $$ it was a no-brainer! I really like the camera. Being just an upgrade, it felt very familiar. Just much more capable. (ISO 12800 does wonders for low-light photos. 5fps! Touch screen functions! 1080p video!) The lens isn't a fixed focal length. But when zooming, it doesn't 'twist' out like some. I use a polarizing filter quite a bit. It's nice not to have to readjust the filter if you happen to change the zoom. The bag, I still have it. But I already have several I have been using for a long time. Hope this helps! CHJUDITH B : I only assume you want to purchase the 'Body Only' bc you have lenses that you feel would work. With the newer settings on this camera it would be questionable which settings would coordinate with older lenses. I haven't tried my old lense on my new T5i, so I can't give you an honest answer. Sorry not to be of more help.JIMMY R : Yes, you can buy the T5i body only. Our 2nd T5i was purchased body only.
Shopper : How do I open the built in flash? It shows it open in the manual but it seems tough and I don't want to force it. (Just bought it today)ERICH K : it will work on what program you have it on AUTO IT WILL OPEN WHEN YOU NEED IT. play whit it to see what will open it. have fun,i like my t5i and still leaning .OKKRIS S : Button on the left side of the body next to the EOS logo opens the flash. It has a little lightning bolt icon on it.JOHAN T : The flash will pop up automatically when needed in any of the automatic shooting modes. When using the creative modes, you can pop up the flash by hand by pushing the flash button on the front left of the camera [just beside the EOS label], see also manual p.20. Good luck!DONNA P : There's a small button on the right side of the flash housing (as you have the camera to yor eye). When you press it, the flash will open. To close it, just push it down until it clicks in place. If you're using the camera in auto mode, the flash will open automatically when the lighting conditions require it.JUAN R : Hi, is a button on your left hand side with a lighting symbol push it and it will pop up, to close it just push it back down, if you choose the green zone shooting option dial it will pop up automatically. I hope this help!PAUL R : I noticed this too. Assuming the camera is switched on, you must press the flash button AND the shutter button simultaneously to make the flash flip up. You need only press the shutter button half way down.TIMOTHY D : (There is always the manual... :-) Turn on the power. Push the small button on the front with the lightning bolt image - you can see it slightly above and to the left of the EOS Rebel text as you look at the image of the camera on the T5i page.

My thoughts on the camera in general.

I love my T5i & the lens. I just need/want to get out and use it more to learn how to take advantage of all it's features. I already had a T3 and enjoy it but having the T5i it has become my backup/second camera and the T5i is my primary. Great camera & lens and at an amazing price!!!

Canon T5i

I have always loved Canon cameras for their quality and the lenses. I used Canon Ti series in film school and bought the T5i to use professionally. I own 2 of them.

My Favorite Rebel

There's something about the T5i that makes photography fun. 18mp sensor, 9 cross-type focus points, 5 fps, and an AF that's as good as any I've used. The extra lens reach I get with the T5i over my 6D makes it perfect for photographing Florida Keys wildlife.

Professional in Training

If you are starting out to be a professional or learn about photography the "Rebel" is the perfect camera to start out with. Then years later, upgrade to the "Mark" series. I'm not going to lecture you of why. It's just like the same reasons you don't marry the first person you like or kiss.

Great camera to learn on

I teach photography at the high school level and this camera has been great for my students. It is so flexible that the beginners can start on day one and be able to get some nice shots, but it also allows those that have more experience to shoot amazing pictures in manual mode and come up with some very creative and more complex images.

Great experience

I had a t3i before this but wanted that silent focus on the fly by touchscreen for video and this camera does that really well. The stm kit lens are so quiet .18-55 is lens was a great range to start with. I am told that they use magnets instead of gears but what ever it is ... Its Quiet. I do mostly wildlife but I have been learning about the wireless flash features it can be lots of fun and also very usefull in getting some shots where just 1 flash will not do.(dont flash the animals) The onboard mic works good when you are indoors and can bounce the sound around , The mic jack can come in handy with an external mic outside where dealing with wind and stuff.

What is the microphone jack size for this?

My friend and I use this camera for making youtube videos and the sound quality isn't the best so we would like to buy a microphone for it. However, the jack size isn't the standard 3.5 mm. Any help would be great!

Great camera!

This camera is just what I needed as a beginner photographer. It is easy to use, lightweight, and has amazing auto focus. After a long day it begins to say busy a lot, which is why I rated it at four stars. For its price, it is a great beginners camera, and maybe some pro.

A Great Source of Frustration

I have had many problems with this product. I will write an extensive review when I am certain the poor photographs I produce with this camera are a result of the camera and or myself. In the mean time, I would recommend moving up a grade rather than buying this camera. I think having the GPS is worth having and this model does not have it.

Good Camera

I bought this camera about one year ago. Great for making vlogs, taking video and photos of family, and making short films. Helped me on some projects as well. Some things that where an issue is the audio on the camera, it is kind off bad. I also had some lagging on the touchscreen. However, I do believe on a slim margin that some phones are still better than this camera. I think it is still a waste of money, and a waste of time to research this camera.

Fantastic all around camera

I bought my T5i about a month ago and so far I have been nothing but satisfied, I have had no problems with this camera at all. At first I was thinking about getting a second battery just for backup but the one included in the kit lasts quite a long time. I can take the camera out for a whole day of shooting and still have over half battery life still. The flip-out screen has come in handy on multiple occasions for low or high angle shots, and the fact that it is touch screen is even more of a bonus. The only downside I have noticed about this camera is the slow auto focus, when capturing photos the auto focus may take longer than it would take to just manually focus it on your own.

About Canon T5i

FEATURED REVIEWS

Cannon is my camera of choice!

By Kim

I have had my camera for 2 years now and love it! It's easy to use. My grandson who is 6 can even take great pics with this camera.

Totally in love with T5i & 18-135 STM

By Shaun I.

The 18-135 STM and the T5i make a very compelling combo. The results I'm getting are exactly what I've always hoped for in an SLR. The focusing is fast and deadly accurate. The images are sharp and vibrant. Colors are simply amazing. The image stabilization really works and does make a huge difference is difficult conditions. Add to all this, the amazing touch screen, fast and accurate live view, and great video capabilities. How can you go wrong with this combo?

CANON EOS T5I DSLR W/18-135 STM LENS

Low light? Live events? Quiet, awkward situations that require quiet autofocus features? No matter what the challenge, the CANON EOS T5I DSLR W/18-135 STM LENS is capable of rising to the occasion for photo enthusiasts, amateur photographers, and beyond. But there’s a lot more that goes into making the Canon t5i an ideal pick for anyone who wants to graduate to a better brand of photography:

Product Highlights

  • Full, HD video. We here at Adorama are talking about a mean 1080p at 30 fps and 24 fps. And with the Movie Servo and autofocus during shooting, you won’t have to focus on moving switches and pressing buttons while you take live video to your heart’s content. Perfect for weddings, concerts, sporting events, and more.
  • Crystal-clear LCD means you’ll never have to struggle with your shots again. You can thank the 3.0” Clear View II Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD for that.
  • Capable night viewing isn’t easy, but the Canon-t5i pulls it off with “Scene Intelligent Auto Mode,” giving you the optical camera adjustments based on its own scene recognition programming.

You don’t have to be a professional to get the full benefits out of a camera like this; if anything, the camera will do most of the work for you, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scene.

Learn about the CANON EOS T5I DSLR W/18-135 STM LENS

Ask any professional photographer what kind of camera options gives them control and versatility and they’re likely to answer with one of the following: shutter speed, exposure options, and of course, the ability to handle a degree of low light. But let’s not forget the importance of focal length. Specifically, let’s talk about the CANON EOS T5I DSLR W/18-135 STM LENS, a camera/lens combination ready for just about any focal length you decide to throw at it.

But a key variable like focal length is not all there is to the Canon t5i. Consider the following:

  • Spectacular viewfinding. If you’re going to be using your Adorama-based Canon t5i with 18-135mm STMS lens deals to their full potential, then you’re going to need to know what you’re shooting—and have some idea of how it will turn out. For viewfinding, observe the 3“ Clear View II Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD with 1040k-dot resolution. This isn’t just technobabble: it’s responsible for pitch-perfect shot composition even at odd angles. The monitor even has a smudge-resistant coating for those of us with oily fingers.
  • Let’s not forget video. In this day and age, a camera-lens duo needs to deliver beautiful still shots as well as crisp live action, and the Canon t5i does not disappoint with its full HD 1080p at 30fps/24fps. Continuous autofocus will keep your shots stable even while shooting—and there is a manual exposure possible even in video mode, giving you all the cinematic effects you could possibly hope for without renting directly from a major motion picture studio.
  • Memory. No, Adorama isn’t selling you laptops here: memory really matters. The Canon EOS Rebel t5i Digital SLR with 18-135mm STM lens can utilize SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. What does this mean for you? It means versatility, considering that this product is also compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Use a variety of tools—including memory cards and lenses. There’s no reason to limit yourself.
  • Scene detection. “Scene Intelligent Auto Mode” might sound like something out of a spy movie, but what it actually means is that this camera can make automatic adjustments with scene recognition, even when shooting night scenes. This means you don’t have to pack up and go home just because the sun is setting.
  • Crisp details, beautiful colors. The 14-bit Analog/Digital conversion and an ISO range from 100-12800 means all of the professional-quality photography you can get your hands on. The autofocus is fast and quiet—and so is the multi-shot feature, thanks to noise reduction.

From the Manufacturer
The Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is an APS-C format digital SLR camera with an 18MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. It is combined with the versatile 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens for a wide range of focal length shooting options.

With 14-bit Analog/Digital conversion, an ISO range from 100-12800 (expandable to 25600) and Multi Shot Noise Reduction, the Rebel T5i offers sharp details, accurate colors and low-noise imaging in both bright and low-light shooting situations. Its 9-point all cross-type autofocus system provides fast focusing when shooting with the viewfinder and Hybrid CMOS AF increases autofocus speeds when shooting in Live View. The Rebel T5i can continuously shoot up to 5 fps.

A 3.0" Clear View II Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD with 1,040k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing. Its tilt and swivel capability makes it easy to compose your shots at odd angles and a smudge-resistant coating keeps the monitor clear. Intuitive touchscreen operation includes Touch Autofocus.

Full HD 1080p at 30 fps and 24 fps is supported with Movie Servo for continuous autofocus during shooting. Manual exposure is provided in video mode and 60 fps is possible when shooting at 720p HD. A built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment is provided for quality audio recording with your videos.

Scene Intelligent Auto Mode automatically makes the optimal camera adjustments based on scene recognition and improved scene detection is particularly helpful when shooting night scenes. Advanced imaging features such as Handheld Night Scene and HDR Backlight Control make capturing difficult shots easy and seven Creative Filters add expressive touches to your images and can even be viewed in real time during Live View shooting.

The EOS Rebel T5i utilizes SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards and is compatible with the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. It is paired here with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which offers wide-angle to telephoto focal range specifically designed for APS-C cameras. This compact 18-135mm lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization system to reduce the blurring effects of camera shake when shooting at long focal lengths or in low light. It offers four stops of correction to provide clear images when using slower shutter speeds and Dynamic Image Stabilization reduces video shake while tracking moving subjects or walking with your camera. The autofocus stepping motor (STM) offers fast, accurate and quiet autofocus when using the Movie Servo mode on the Rebel T5i, which ensures that the sound of the autofocus motor does not interrupt your audio recording while shooting a video. An aspherical and an Ultra-low Dispersion lens element reduce aberrations for sharp, high-contrast imaging.
