Disappointment

I purchased this unit thinking this would produce better images than the flatbed scanner which I had been using for my negatives. However, I soon discovered that I had to scan each slide negatively and more often than not, I could not get the images I wanted when I scanned the negative them. Some pictures might be scalped; others might include two or more negatives (something which I did not want). Moreover, it seemed that all of the instruction was on the CD/DVDs and not in a book-which made it a little tricky for me to use. I will try to make use of this device again, but so far its best use has been as a paperweight.

Horrible documentation

Respected sources recommend Plustek, which is why I bought one. The set-up instructions are awful: contradictory, sometimes just plain wrong, badly written, confusing, scattered over several separate enclosures. I came within a millimeter of returning this. It is working now at so-so quality and the next challenge will be to find decent operating instructions. Be warned that the manufacturer hasn't bothered to help the new user.

Best slide scanner ever!

As a video services professional my firm takes in a fair amount of slides to convert to DVD. This holiday season we were presented with 5,000 slides to convert. We already own a Plustek OpticFilm 7200 but thought it would take too long to do the slides so we bought the Pacific Image 50 slide tray scanner. What an absolute piece of junk it was. We spent more time clearing jams up and the slides got damaged when clearing so we returned that piece of garbage and bought 2 additional PlusTek OpticFilm 7400 scanners and were able to quickly and efficiently scan all those slides. The PlusTek did a wonderful job, bright vivid colors, scratch correction and more. Our client loved the results and so I highly recommend the entire line of PlusTek products.

Steep learning curve

Still trying to get my first negative scanned. Not intuitive. Documentation is fair. Software is challenging.

I am extremely satisfied with the scanner's, and software's performance

I purchased this scanner to digitalize a collection of thousands of Kodachrome slides, and to finish slide scanning for a photo book I am working on. I am extremely satisfied with the scanner's, and software's performance. My only complaint is with the documentation. There's no user's manual- only a big instruction sheet. If I wasn't already familiar with using scanners, and scanner software, I'd probably be lost. I still don't understand the use of the "Intelliscan" and "Quick Scan" buttons on the front of the scanner. In spite of all this, the Plustek 7400 makes great scans and is easier and faster than other slide scanners I've used. Before buying this unit, I read reviews complaining about it being too slow. Not necessarily so- The scan speed depends on the resolution you choose (the software allows a range of 300-7200dpi). Scaning speed can range from 10 to 30 seconds, or more. Also, another design feature I like is that the user manually moves the slide(or negative)holder through the scanner one slide at a time during the scanning process. This means there is no motor-powered mechanism to break down or cause problems. Bottom line: For the price, This is an excellent product. It makes GREAT scans. It is easy to use. Recommended for users with some experience with scanners.

Almost as good as a Flextight Prec II

I've been scanning my Leica shot Chromes with a Flextight Precission II (SCSI) for the past 8 years. I recently had to move and downsize my equipment. Since I only shoot 35mm these days, I was looking for a cheap scanner to replace my old massive Flextight. Keep in mind, these are 35mm comparisons ONLY Here's what the Flextight has over the Plustek 7200: slightly sharper grain slightly better shadow depth slightly better highlight maintenance less dust and scratches Here's what the Plustek 7200 has over the SCSI Flextight: Much faster scanning (about 10 times the speed) better color out of the box (Plustek "sees" the color of the film more accurately) I didn't experience any difficulty with the software. It's as easy to install as it is to run. What can I say? I'm surprised and elated. For the price, you can't beat the results.

Excellent Hardware; Very Good Software

I have a 45+ year library of 35mm negatives, color and black and white, and wanted to scan a percentage of them; less than 10%. My priority was not mass production, it was precision; fidelity to the original. This product allows me to do that, I'm pleased to say. Even with scratched and dirty or poorly processed negatives I have been able to produce, with minor retouching, very good digital copies. That said, it requires a strong commitment and patience to become proficient and productive. However, the 7400 OpticFilm is pretty much the product I thought it would be and represents a great bargain as I see it. I do have some criticisms, but they are related to getting started, installing software and learning the ins and outs of Silverfast SE. Plustek can do better and I will be communicating that directly to the manufacturer. None of these thing are reasons not to buy the product, only nuisances that can easily be eliminated in my opinion. I'm happy.

Great piece of tech, a must have scanner

I scanned nearly 1000 films. It is easy to use and fast! the Quality is excellent, a flatbed multifuction scanner can not compare with.
