FAST!

It's much faster than my old usb card reader. This cuts my download time in half.

Great for transferring image files

I use this product to transfer image files from my camera to my computer without having to expose camera to the risk of damage from a computer malfunction. Because it is small and lightweight, I can easily carry it with me when I travel so I can share my photos with others. I have owned this product for 3 years and have had no issues with it.

Fast but unreliable at times

We've been using SanDisk cards and readers for awhile but have been less than pleased with its performance. The reader sometimes does not recognize the cards when inserted and sometimes encounter errors when unmounting. Otherwise, the reader works fine and gets the job done but a little concern with data transfer and risking corruptions (we've had a few).

Pretty quick, but could be faster

It is pretty fast and I love the rubber pad on the bottom, but it doesn't have enough mass to stay in place. This is good for traveling, but a little annoying for desk use. Also, the Firewire 800 port is upside down. I haven't been able to find another Firewire CF reader though, so these tradeoffs are worth it.

Good Reader

This is just a little faster at transferring than our camera, but it reads the files faster at first. It is nice to not have to use our camera to transfer pics to our computer. This is reliable and definitely nice to have.

Product is fast and well made.

Much better design than a firewire card reader made by other companies. There is little to mechanically go wrong. This is a very fast reliable product.

A Speed Demon.

One of my first downloads was a card with 298 Jpeg's and 298 Raw files I had the camera set to capture both. I put the card in my old USB reader and after a while it showed it would take 3 hours for the download. Then I removed the card and inserted it into the San Disk Firewire reader and it show it would take 5 minutes to download those same images. I think about all that time I wasted waiting for the USB reader to download images. I'm just sorry I waited this long to get the San Disk Firewire reader. Dennis

Naysayers need to read tech specs

This CF reader works exactly as described and advertised. All the critics who complain about connectivity or compatibility, try reading the specs first instead of just *assuming* it will work because it says Firewire/PC. You need to know the abilities/compatibility of your equipment. Knocking the product or the company just because of your own inability to read the details FIRST is not a accurate review of the product. It's rather a review of the reviewer... ;)

make sure u have a 6pin

It does its job, pricey at the moment, and make sure you have a 6 pin firewire port.

Awful

Be sure to check that your computer's Firewire port uses a 6-pin connector to actually power the card reader. My card reader has worked one or two times, but mostly my computer cannot detect it. From message forums it seems to be a power issue that, of course, Sandisk doesn't mention in their product description, but that is related to the type of pin/terminal connection. Awful product, cheap build and overpriced for what it is.

Fast Reader

The build quality is good. The shell is made of metal. The transfer speed can reach what it says. Very useful if you want to transfer pictures faster to your computer, and save the battery for camera. It provides two types of cables (4 and 6 circuit), I can connect it to both my pc and mac.

Fast reader, poor ergonomy.

Fast reader but special cable needed (reader side), cable too short, poor connectivity (have to plug-unplug card or reader some times to be detected buy the computer).Does not worth the [$].

Great Buy

I bought this to transfer photos from my Nikon D90 (which for some reason my MAC does not recognize as a camera). It works really great and I was able to transfer over 600 photos in less than 10 minutes.

My first FW800 reader after FW400

Yes, FW800 is faster than FW400, all right but 2g per minute transfer time as a reveiwer wrote, is, IMHO, a stretch. I have an Extreme III 8g and MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz and am getting 1g/min with an Express Card/34 CF reader; still pretty good compared to my FW800 reader.BTW, the FW800 failed recently after just four months of occasional use. Didn't drop it or anything like that. All pins intact, of course. Waiting for SanDisk Tech Support (www.sandisk.com) to respond to my warranty replacement request.

buyer beware

regretfully this card reader has unadvertised faults. It is claimed to be the best and fastest card reader for mac user's however the firewire 400 cable/reader DOES NOT work! you can only use the fw800 cable, fast but not dual capable. so what you have here is a 1/2 card reader. it should therefore only cost 1/2 as much...

OMG You have got to invest in this

I have been constantly transferring images using this device at 2gb per min. That's a FULL 4gb SanDisk Extreme III card in 2 min.

Fast, Small

Fast, Small, Stylish. This thing blows away the old crummy multi-card reader I had before. I use it to load photos/videos from 16 gig cards. It eats through them pretty freakin quick.

Much faster than USB 2.0 card readers

Firewire is more expensive than USB 2.0 when it comes to card readers, but this unit is worth the cost. A recent camera upgrade increased my file size from 5 MB to 14MB, making a USB card reader too slow for business. This unit is speedy, downloading files as quickly as you'd expect a Firewire device to operate. It has a clean design, and a felt pad on its bottom helps keep it in place. It is also smaller than the product photos indicate, which was a nice surprise (doesn't take up too much desk space). Keep in mind, however, that this device is for Compact Flash cards only.

Lightining-fast transfers

With my images and CF cards getting bigger all the time, transfers to my Mac using my old USB 2.0 reader were staring to annoy me; downloading 4 16GB cards could easily take more than two hours. The SanDisk Firewire reader changed everything - supposing you have a firewire-capable PC or Mac and fast cards. Unfortunately, it only works with CF (not that you would find really fast micro-SDs around the corner). Great buy !

Works perfectly on my Mac

I've used this SanDisk Extreme IV Compact Flash Card Firewire Reader on my MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo(running 10.5.6) as well as on the first Intel MacBook Pro, PowerMac G5 and I have had not a single issue. I am using SanDisk ExtremeIV 16GB card and the shots recorded on this card is with Canon 5D Mark II. The RescuePro Software that comes on the CD that says MacOS 10.1+, will not work. I should say, you wont' be able to install it without getting a version compatible with Leopard (10.5 or higher). I believe it's because in Leopard, it uses a flat package installer and does not support the older installer. Just call SanDisk and then they will give you a phone number to call. Rescue Pro is actually made by a different company. This company will give you the version that works on Mac running Leopard or newer but you need a serial number to give them so don't throw away the CD envelope/sleeve as the S/N is on that. oh, this comes with two Firewire cables. One is 1394a-1394b, and 1394b-1394b. In short, if you own a mac, one of these cable should work for you. One is the firewire cable that you can connect
