Epson engineered the T157820 157 Matte Black Ink Cartridge for the Epson R3000 Printer. These and all other T157 Ink cartridges for the Stylus Photo R3000 printer have an approximately 1 in 20 chance of being bad out of box or after one or two prints. They are equipped with a chip that counts down the number of times that the cartridge has been called on for ink and this chip is what tells the printer when the ink is "out" but it's based on the "count" and not the ink level so it is possible for there to be a good amount of ink thrown out with a "depleted" cartridge. This chip also tells the printer that it is a Genuine Epson cartridge. When these bad cartridges are installed in the printer, the printer will display "Cannot Recognize cartridge" and encourage you to re-seat it. I was able to get Epson to replace four of these bad cartridges over a two year time span but now they say that the fifth bad cartridge must be my printer having the problem and are refusing to replace anymore BAD cartridges. I've been an IT technician since 1985 and I know a bit about trouble shooting...If you put in a new cartridge and it fails with a "Cannot recognize" error and re-seat it and still have that same error, then put the old expended cartridge back in to the printer and receive the "Out of ink" error as expected...then replace with a second new cartridge and everything works as it should for the life of the cartridge...EVERYTHING leads to the first new cartridge being BAD!!! Someone at Epson claiming to be a technician told me that it would have to be the printer because I've had other failures...each of the failed cartridges were a different color, except the last one which is repeat Yellow, and just happens to be the one they sent last as a replacement. If they were all the same color I would tend to agree that it could be a problem with the printer, but different color, different circuitry. I'm having very little confidence in Epson's technical staff after this encounter. I have read on several blogs that others are experiencing this same failure and many of them don't even try to have Epson replace them and just bear the ~$30 cost. I will be looking into a refillable cartridge system for my printer...the thing is I really like the printer and was willing to have a double supply of cartridges (an investment of $500+) on hand in order to be able to replace the occasional bad one, but that's only when they were willing to replace the bad cartridges. It is clever of them to NOT have any warranty on their cartridges...they must know about how many fail, they're just unwilling to stand behind their product!
I use this ink in the only printer. I have the Epson stylus Photo R3000 and I believe that this ink works best in that printer. I wouldn't use anything else! Love the printer Love Adorama...very fast service and wonderful personnel.
