Questions & Answers

Shopper : Is there any way to predict, perhaps by serial number, if an x-100 is likely to have sticky blades?STUART F : Never had a problem with the shutter. If however you xfer data to an apple system, be sure to lock the card. An apple product adds data that that slows camera startup for minutes.ANDREW R : My understanding is that it's theoretically possible, however the serial number of a given unit is not known until you receive it so we really have knowing the serial number of the unit being shipped nor would we have any way to communicate that information to you prior to purchase. That said I believe that particular issue was specific to units manufactured in 2011. Whatever the case, the manufacturer would be a better resource regarding this issue.
Shopper : How does the image quality compare to a canon 1ds mk ii when shooting in RAW mode?JIM R : I do not have 1 ds mk ii and I do have a 40d and the X100 is better - sharper (no AA filter), less noise and better tonality.YOSHICHIKA O : I do not know Canon 1ds ll. Fuji X100 is low noise and image quality is exellent even jpeg images. It is all depending on how you care to photograph and how big you want to blow up and what are you going to use it for.MICHAEL L : raw images are super. I don't think you will see a difference between the two but you will not be disappointed if you chose the Fuji. Good luck. MikeRUTH S : if you are a pro, and have the dough....canon is the way to go! I love my fuji for street work and portraits. flesh tones are wonderful. but if you are doing landscape, real estate, still life or advertising work, the canon is probably a better choice. I bought the fuji because it is my 'go to' camera for traveling and keeping with me while out and about. small enough to hold in one hand for a long time. p.s. the sensor is smaller in the fuji. good luck! ruthie schneider
Shopper : How fast is the shutter sync when using pocket wizards with off camera flashes, and can the on camera flash be used as a slave trigger for off camera flashes with slave modes?LARRY F : If you haven’t tried using a flash with the x100 you are missing out on a lot of fun! Try photographing a subject in full sunlight. Set the exposure manually so that you are underexposing the ambient by about -2 stops. Then use an off camera flash to bring your subject up to a proper exposure. This is super easy to do with the x100 because I can sync up to 1/ 4,000 of a second. Even wide open at f 2.0. I have gotten some very nice shots with this technique. You can do this with Nikon high speed sync but you lose most of your flash power. With the x100 you can shoot at full power, if you flash duration is short enough. Very cool.LARRY F : That is an excellent question. One which I have spent a lot of time and money exploring. In fact it is one of the reasons I bought the Fuji x100. I have the Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 system for Nikon. It can be setup to be used with the x100 but I didn’t want to have to hook it to the computer each time I wanted to use it. Also it only syncs up to about 1/500. So I looked at other options. I tried the Cowboy radio triggers. And they worked perfectly up to about 1/1,000. I tried the “commander” mode in the camera. Here is two things you need to know about that, one it fires at FULL power (very undesirable, over exposure), two it is not doing anything but triggering a remote flash. The good news is that it works great all the way to the max shutter speed of 1/4.000. I put a piece of a slide film strip leader over the flash to cut out all but the IR and it triggers the flash very, very well. So if you have Nikon flashes, or other flashes with an optical trigger, this is a great option, subject of course to all of the limitations of optical triggers. I wasn’t completely satisfied and so continued my research. I learned about a radio flash trigger by Paul C Buff that was supposed to sync at higher speeds. I bought one and tested it. It does indeed sync at higher speeds. It even sync’s at the max 1/4,000 speed. It works great. Though it is not nearly as neat and convenient as some of the other solutions. It requires the use of a cord on the receiver. So long story short, the PW’s will work sort of. The Cowboy triggers work fine if you can live with cheap, and sync up to about 1/1,000 The optical works perfectly every time but you will need to cover it with IR material and will be subject to optical limitations. The Paul C. Buff work perfectly, but are somewhat cumbersome. Feel free to send me and email me or we could talk on the phone. Like I said, I have done quite a bit of research on this issue.PAUL L : The X100's manual lists the shutter sync speed as 1/2,000. I'm not familiar with pocket wizards. I assume the following quotation from the manual applies to slave flash: "Choose ON when using an optional third-party flash unit mounted on the camera hot shoe, or ON (COMMANDER) to control optional remote flash units using the camera’s built-in flash. No adjustment is required with optional FUJIFILM flash units. See the documentation provided with the flash unit for details. The camera can be used with flash units that provide aperture adjustment, external metering, and sensitivity control. Some flash units that are designed specifically for other cameras can not be used."Carl B : I don't use a flash with the X100 so I have no idea.

Not a recommended camera

My X100 has the current software but it suffers from shuttler lag. This is not all the time but enough to make me want to see how far I can throw it!!!!

Modern Retro

Shoot mainly people, places, things I need to mention that I do own a Canon pro DSLR and like many others I love working with it (I do product shots) but for pleasure its a bit cumbersome to travel with. That said if one goes in with no pre disposition that things need to be done this way or that way then the Fuji X100 is a complete pleasure to work with. The key I found is to spend a day or to just getting to know the X100. After some trial and error you'll discover that you become much more thoughtful about about the shots you take and you enjoy shooting much more. You shoot less and with get higher quality, more dramatic shots - where as before you shot tons and had to go and pic thru and see if there was something worth calling a keeper. The X100 makes you shoot with your heart and less with your head - a pleasure to work with. And while others can beat you over the head with specs, saturation, focus time etc, etc... there is one thing they can't touch... Fun factor.

Great Camera

This is a great little camera for street photography or as your everyday camera. Image quality is excellent. Auto focus is great in good light and the manual controls are great for someone looking for more manual control.

Fuji x100 - Fantastic grab-and-go

The Fuji x100 is an incredible compact camera. The ergonomics and image quality are top-notch. My only real complaint is the terribly slow and often inaccurate auto-focus system. The camera's sensor shines in low-light situations, but the af basically doesn't even work without the ever-annoying focus-assist light.

Not Ready For Prime Time

The Fugifilm X100 feels like a Beta test camera. The concept, look, and construction are all great. I was really looking forward to having an easy to carry camera with a quality large sensor and professional image controls. My family would complain that I never bring a camera to family events. It was just too much of an effort to pack up the Nikon D4, D800E, or D700 that I use at work. I could live with the quirky menus and some poor control layouts. I could not live with how the autofocus hunted for focus in low light. The electronic viewfinder works way too slow. The viewfinder freezes an image of the picture that was just taken. This slows up follow up shots. The X100 was so slow that I could not take action shots of the family playing horseshoes. I was so frustrated trying to take pictures at a New Year Eve's party. The autofocus hunted forever trying to take pictures on the dance floor in low light. The manual focus works so poorly that it was useless. All of a sudden my D4 didn't seem so heavy. I returned the X100. Now I see that Fugifilm is addressing some of these issues with a new X100s model.

This camera made my DSLR's lonely...

Excellent results in 99% of lighting conditions. F2-F16 Range very versatile. If used in Auto mode, ANYONE can use it. Manual mode allows unlimited possibilities, film emulation modes are amazing, built-in ND filter very handy. I have used for street photography, landscapes, portraits, macro shots, night scenes, B&W - excellent as well! My Canon 7D is collecting dust because of the versatility and portability of this outstanding camera!

Just takes getting used to fixed lens

This is an excellent camera. The only thing about the fixed lens, it takes getting used to not having zoom. (And getting over the anxiety of leaving the house with a camera that doesn't zoom in case you need one.) But once you get over the mental block, it allows you to take great pictures, and not have to lug around a heavy DSLR everywhere you go. Plus, I have found that even for those times where you need more than 35mm, you can still lighten your load by having the X100 in the following ways. First, for those times when I am really worried about having a zoom, but not sure I am going to need it (say Disneyland) I carry my Cannon S95 in my pocket. That way, I am set for just about anything, and it's like having nothing at all. Second, for those times where I know I am going to need a zoom, like the zoo or kids sports, having the X100 lets me carry it for the close up shots, and then carry my D7000 with just the 55-300 VR lens for the zoom. Considering that I used to carry a D700 with the 28-300 lens in those situations where I wanted to cover everything, that is a huge weight savings. And having the fixed 35mm lens can actually be a good thing, b/c it forces you to work a little harder at making a good photo in some situations, instead of just mindlessly zooming in. Finally, to those who say that the menu, etc., is confusing, read Ken Rockwell's User Guide. I spent 30 minutes with that and have no issues with the menu setup, etc. whatsoever. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is b/c I think Fuji's price is a little too high. If this camera was more in the $600 range, it would have gotten 5 stars.

Excellent Service /Amazing Little Camera

I purchase the Fuji X100 about a year after it hit the market. At WPPI I played with the pre-production model and was unimpressed. However....Fuji, IMO has done a great job of listening to its users and made the necessary adjustments and software upgrades that has turned the x100 into an amazing "rangefinder" style highly mobile and stealthy camera solution. After the software upgrades, and a few days of actually reading the online PDF x100 manual.... I'm like: "This is a revelation of a camera." Super compact, very well built, amazing IQ, very easy to use. It's my new cary everywhere camera body. So light I can handle it in the palm of my hand with just two fingers. It's really a joy to use. Brings a new fun and spirit to my photography. Typically I'm totting around my Canon EOS 1D Mark III. Its super heavy and not pleasant to travel with. But the X100 is a joy to take in hand and walk the streets with. I did purchase the optional and very expensive Fuji lens hood. Small niggle, that it does not click into place. Instead is a semi-screw mount. However, I'm afraid it may fall off someday while I'm walking and shooting. I say semi screw mount b/c it doesn't "lock" on to the lens adapter that ships with it. I also purchased 2 extra off brand batteries, and am considering purchasing a one or two more battery chargers due to the fact that the batteries take about 2 hours to charge. With my purchase I also got the Fuji leather case, which I wasn't impressed with. The build was just fine and top quality. However, the body is so sleek and fits in my hands so naturally, the case just kind of gets in the way and feels a bit awkward and clumsy on the beautifully designed body. Today I'll also be getting the Artist & Artisan red silk cable strap and a Match Tech red Boop. The reason for the strap is so that I can go hands free when doing long outings and street shooting and need a break. Bottom line; All round great camera, amazing IQ and super cool looks.

Fuji X100 Exceeds Expectations

After reading all the reviews I could find I expected a great camera with some annoyances in the way it is set up & used. I found the latter to be less than anticipated & now just enjoy using it as well. Gave up my Nikon D7000 & multi lenses for it & feel like a great weight (literally) is gone!

In love with this camera

This camera operates very differently than a DSLR, and it takes a while to get used to it. If you expect this camera to work as a DSLR, you'll be frustrated big time. If you understand this, and take time to know this camera, you'll be rewarded. Image quality is superb even in low light. The film simulation is very well done, I find myself shooting mostly in Provia and Velvia. And it is much lighter than any DSLR system which makes it ideal for travel. It is a fun camera which i take everywhere with me. I use it for portraits, street photography and landscapes. Haven't tried, but I would not use this camera to shoot sports.

Great Camera!

Great digital camera for Leica users who don't want to walk around with the expensive (overpriced) M9. Only negative is the standard model should be able to accept different lenses, preferably, Leica's.

clasic design, graet images quality

great concept not quite ready for prime time. The firmware updates have helped but the camera is too slow to wake up, shutter and focus lag too long, menus confusing. The image quality, when the camera actually turned on in time and focuses properly, are amazing but I lost too many photos due to the camera's slowness. I've traded my x100 in on a Nex 7 (about the same price). It too is not perfect but I'm liking it better than the X100 (althouhg I mess the image quality and great looks.

Great compact camera with some drawbacks

I shoot with a d700 and a d300 but wanted a smaller, lighter, more compact camera for casual shooting. The x100 seemed like a good camera without sacrificing image quality. The aps sized sensor gives me better image quality than my d300. The optical viewfinder is clear and the electronic overlay makes it easy to use. The camera is well built and the retro is definitely a plus. The fixed focal length lens is not a problem for me since when I "travel light" I normally choose a 35mm on my d700. Any heavy shooting mean I'll leave the x100 as a backup and will be shooting with the d700 Shooting with the x100 for a couple weeks I realized that I've been spoiled by my nikon cameras. The biggest adjustment I've had to make with the x100 is the focusing system. The auto focus is much slower than either of my nikons. I believe it is the difference in contrast focusing versus phase detection. In low light the x100 has trouble focusing and can take up to a couple seconds to get it right. As other users have mentioned, the manual focus is almost impossible to use since it requires so many turns to get it right. The lag time from shot to shot is also something I needed to get used to. When shooting large jpgs with a 8gb sandisk extreme pro card (95mb/s) it takes about a second to write. You can continue to take picture but can not review or view the menu before the camera is done writing. The battery life is also short compared to DLSRs. Carrying an extra battery is a must if you expect to be shooting all day. It takes about 200-300 per charge. The battery meter is also misleading as the partial charge indication happens to close to the battery actually dying. Overall I think it is a very good camera for casual use. If you don't expect it to perform like a higher end consumer DSLR then you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic camera in a small package

I use this camera for landscape, portrait, studio and street photography. Image quality is outstanding, even at high ISO. I shoot with the standard film simulation (PROVIA) which produces very well balanced colors. I shoot most of the time in aperture priority, and have configured the Fn button to turn on the ND filter to close down 3 F-stops under a brilliant sun. For me, its portability and stealth capabilities make this camera a day-to day companion. It is slower than a SLR and it takes a long time to write to disk, particularly when shooting RAW. So, I would not use this camera to shoot sports.

Great camera

Fantastic pictures....isn't that what it's all about. Others have mentioned it is quirky and not for beginners but I am just getting back into photography and while it did take a while to learn, I am having no problems. And I love the pictures I am taking. Just spent a full day and evening on the streets of Chicago taking holiday pictures long after sundown and the photos are amazing. Ate dinner at Gino's Pizza in a dimly lit bar and was able to take great photos even there. The colors are amazing even in low light. Macro shots look almost 3-D.

Beautiful camera that needs more work

Beautiful camera that can make amazing images but can also drive you crazy. Its start up time is quite slow; I've missed many photos because the camera went into sleep and I couldn't wake it up quick enough. The manual focus is pretty much useless, it slow and has a very "remote" feel about it; I never try to focus manually. The exposure and flash fill works quite well and the images can be amazing. The unique viewfinder is also very nice, and the fit and finish wonderful. I also had hoped the video would be useable but because it lacks manual controls and external audio it's not much fun. The biggest problem is the quirky menu and operating system. Fuji really needs to work on these issues. I will no doubt sell this camera when the Sony Nex 7 comes available.

Pleasant Surprises

Since my previous post, I have been exploring twilight and night photography. The large clock that appears on the LCD when taking a Bulb exposure is extremely useful when taking very long exposures. During twilight photography of cityscapes, the aperture blades create beautiful star burst patterns from point sources of light. The X100 remains my GoTo camera for 90% of my photography.

Love my Fuji

My Nikon camera and lenses are too heavy to carry around much anymore so I use them for studio work and take my Fuji instead. I take it everywhere and will take any kind of photo with it. Some photos just need a little more creativity since the lens is so wide. Believe it or not, I love the menus. Fuji has boiled them down to the most important features and once I got used to them I find them easy to use. The shutter lag is tough to get used to since I'm used to a much faster response. Since I don't use this camera for any sports or action photos I haven't found it to be a major con. Changing the view mode is the most frustrating since it takes both hands and I keep forgetting how to do it. AF is slower than I'm used to, minor con.

If you can live with one lens this is great. Not for the working pro except as a backup or weekender. I know some commentators claim you only need one lens. They simply do not live in the real world. Overall I like this but it is a lot of money for what it is.

Great camera - fits my needs well

The low-light capability of the camera is amazing. My biggest complaint is the long time needed to write to flash, especially when fine+raw is selected. And the camera can't be used during the write time. Other than that, the camera is responsive and comfortable.

X100 High quality and fun camera

After several months of use as a walk around camera I admire the high quality of this camera. Start to finish it is first class. The price is justified by the quality of the body and lens and the images are as good as I've seen from anything. Takes a little gettng use to but that is true of almost everything these days. It does remind me of shooting newspaper assignments 30 years ago with a M4, only this is actually smaller and lighter. I still use a SLR for most work but this is really a first rate camera that will not disappoint.

Fuji X100 vs. Leica X1: Fuji wins.

I have owned the Leica X1 and now I own the Fuji X100. I have to say, in full disclosure, that I am not loyal to any one camera company and I try to really take a hard look and even question my own biases. With that said, the following is what I really believe to be true about the Fuji X100. If you are looking for a classic range finder-ish camera comparable to a Leica M9, you have two options; the X1 or the X100. The Leica and Fuji are equal on image quality but the X100 is so far superior in build quality and usability to the X1. The Fuji X100 has the worlds first optical/electronic viewfinder and this makes the X100 a camera that can be used by a serious photographer. With the X1 you either have to purchase an external optical viewfinder (which does not frame accurately due to paralax issues) or frame your shots using the LCD screen. These framing options might be great for point-and-shoot enthusiasts but it is not an option for photographers with professional aspirations. Furthermore, the Fuji X100's low light capabilities are superior to the Leica M9, which costs several thousand of dollars more than the X100. Like I said before, I have owned the X1 and now I own the Fuji X100. The Fuji's software is not as elegant or as minimal as the Leica's, for sure, but the Fuji X100's build quality, usability, and image quality make this camera one excellent machine, indeed. This, and the fact that the X100 is 1/2 the price of the Leica X1 makes this camera qualitatively better than the Leica X1 on every level. The Fuji X100 is highly recommended.

Best event camera ever

Due to the small size and cool apperance plus the silent mode, people just act normal. Just shot a party where the guests didn't remember if anyone had taken photos (I took 200.) This camera is made to get into the action. This is not a sit on the sideline and zoom kind of camera.

Good product, great store

The next generation will be a great camera. The current camera could be priced a little better or accessories be included (lens hood and filter converter). Camera is pricey enough without having to pay for a lens hood or converter so a filter can be installed.

My goto camera

By ALAN S.

The combination of a 35mm equivalent lens, outstanding image quality, and a macro capability, particularly when coupled with a set of closeup lenses makes this camera a true goto tool. The hybrid viewfinder is simply sensational. I almost always use it in its optical mode. The frame lines accurately adjust for parallax with focus distance. The manual controls make it very easy to set the camera for street shooting. The trick to fast manual focus is to depress the AFL button before fine tuning...

Inspired by the beauty and form of classic cameras from the past, the FinePix X100 combines all the latest technical digital innovations in a beautiful, traditional chassis which oozes class and prestige. Echoing the functional aesthetics of analogue film cameras, the 'manual' dials have been carefully positioned to give the photographer easy control over creative shooting. Aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation can be checked even before the camera is turned on.

The ergonomics of the design offers the perfect balance between compact convenience and user-friendly operation. Every control has been carefully considered to give the photographer fast access to aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation, to allow maximum creative expression with minimum hassle.

The upper control deck and bottom surface of the camera has been cast from magnesium alloy, (semi-solid metal casting), to create a high-precision body with high rigidity. All dials on the upper control deck are also fabricated from metal. Premium quality is evident in every detail. The chassis has been finished with high-quality leather accents, allowing you to indulge in pure photographic satisfaction.

Fujifilm's unique Hybrid Viewfinder is unparalleled and the FinePix X100 is the first camera to feature this innovation. The Hybrid Viewfinder combines the window-type "bright frame" optical viewfinder found in high-end film cameras, such as 35mm or medium-format cameras and the electronic viewfinder system incorporated in fixed single lens or mirrorless digital cameras.

The newly developed lens offers a focal length of 23mm (135 equivalent: 35mm) that lets you capture a wide range of subjects while maintaining high resolution and optical clarity. It also features a large F2 aperture which not only delivers both ample brightness and high contrast sensitivity, but also achieves a high level of resolution when the aperture is closed by 1 or 2 stops. Fully exploiting the superior imaging performance of the FUJINON lens and high-sensitivity sensor, the newly developed EXR Processor achieves the highest image quality of any FinePix camera produced to date. Featuring improved high resolution, high sensitivity, low noise and wide dynamic range technologies, the enhanced EXR processor also features a more rapid signal processing response.
