About Fujifilm X100

Inspired by the beauty and form of classic cameras from the past, the FinePix X100 combines all the latest technical digital innovations in a beautiful, traditional chassis which oozes class and prestige. Echoing the functional aesthetics of analogue film cameras, the 'manual' dials have been carefully positioned to give the photographer easy control over creative shooting. Aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation can be checked even before the camera is turned on.

The ergonomics of the design offers the perfect balance between compact convenience and user-friendly operation. Every control has been carefully considered to give the photographer fast access to aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation, to allow maximum creative expression with minimum hassle.

The upper control deck and bottom surface of the camera has been cast from magnesium alloy, (semi-solid metal casting), to create a high-precision body with high rigidity. All dials on the upper control deck are also fabricated from metal. Premium quality is evident in every detail. The chassis has been finished with high-quality leather accents, allowing you to indulge in pure photographic satisfaction.

Fujifilm's unique Hybrid Viewfinder is unparalleled and the FinePix X100 is the first camera to feature this innovation. The Hybrid Viewfinder combines the window-type "bright frame" optical viewfinder found in high-end film cameras, such as 35mm or medium-format cameras and the electronic viewfinder system incorporated in fixed single lens or mirrorless digital cameras.

The newly developed lens offers a focal length of 23mm (135 equivalent: 35mm) that lets you capture a wide range of subjects while maintaining high resolution and optical clarity. It also features a large F2 aperture which not only delivers both ample brightness and high contrast sensitivity, but also achieves a high level of resolution when the aperture is closed by 1 or 2 stops. Fully exploiting the superior imaging performance of the FUJINON lens and high-sensitivity sensor, the newly developed EXR Processor achieves the highest image quality of any FinePix camera produced to date. Featuring improved high resolution, high sensitivity, low noise and wide dynamic range technologies, the enhanced EXR processor also features a more rapid signal processing response.

Fujifilm X100 Features

  • The new Hybrid Viewfinder offers expanded freedom in the composition and enjoyment of photography in a range of challenging shooting conditions
  • Whether you're framing your shot through the Optical Viewfinder (OVF), or Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), your eye will not only see the subject and scene, but also a range of shooting data projected by an integrated high-definition LCD panel
  • Using a conventional "bright frame" optical viewfinder configuration as a base, the FinePix X100 has an integrated 1,440,000 dot LCD panel to display shooting information
  • Offering a comfortable field of view (approx. 26deg.), the viewfinder magnification of 0.5 is ideal for lens with a 35mm focal length (135 equivalent)
  • Newly Developed Fujinon 23mm F2 Lens: Fixed focal length lens designed with a passion for performance captures the excitement in vivid detail and expand your range of expression
  • While featuring the generous brightness of a maximum F2 aperture, the large-diameter rear lens group is integrated into the body for an ultra-slim profile
  • The simple lens configuration of 6 groups/8 elements centered on a spherical lens is all manufactured from glass. High refractive index glass is used for the single high-performance double-sided aspheric lens and all convex lens elements
  • Providing a circular opening at the largest aperture, the 9-blade aperture diaphragm lets you capture pleasingly defocused background effects. Even with a slightly wide angle, the background is softly out of focus while the foreground is sharply defined
  • Equivalent to 3f-stops, the ND filter in the Fine Pix X100 lens reduces the amount of light to 1/8
  • Custom CMOS Sensor x New EXR Processor: Just as your senses seek to capture the beauty, the heart of the FinePix X100 collects every ray of light to attain the ultimate image quality
  • Packing 12.3 million pixels, the large APS-C CMOS sensor debuts a new standard in high sensitivity/low noise performance and superior image quality, achieving about 10 times the sensitivity of any conventional FinePix compact to date
  • Professional and Creative Photo Expression: Refined functions let you endeavor distinctive photo expressions. For both professional and creative needs, the FinePix X100 functions will fire your passion for photography
  • Just like choosing the ideal film for your creative direction, the easy-to-use film simulation mode lets you simulate the color and tonal qualities of color reversal film types loved by professional photographers
  • Replicating the effects of monochrome film photography, the FinePix X100 lets you use color filters to expand your photographic interpretation. Heighten contrast with the Ye filter and R filter. Brighten greens and deepen reds with the G filter
  • Dynamic range can be expanded to prevent "blackout" or "washout" of the subject in high contrast lighting and bring out the detail in shadow and highlights. In addition to automatic optimization, the user can manually select 100%, 200% and 400% dynamic range
  • The default format is JPEG, but if you want to take the next shot in RAW, with just a touch of the RAW Button, you can switch to JPEG+RAW and capture the next scene in both
  • The FinePix X100's built-in RAW data converter lets you view your results when you're on the move without the need for your PC
  • Empowering you with a choice of 4 different auto bracketing functions (AE, ISO Sensitivity, Dynamic Range and Film Simulation), the FinePix X100 lets you experience the wide world of photographic expression
  • The combination of the high readout speed of the CMOS sensor and the improved processing speed of the EXR Processor enable the FinePix X100 to shoot 5 frames per second (maximum capacity: 10 frames)
  • Within the screen, the auto focus area is divided into a 49-point matrix (25 points in the case of OVF). AF accurately and swiftly recognizes the primary subject and brings it into crystal clear focus and also lets you freely select the position of the AF frame
  • Accelerated by the combination of the high-speed signal readout of the fast CMOS sensor and the newly developed EXR Processor, the contrast detection AF deliver a huge leap in speed and precision so you never miss a shot
  • The distance index bar is displayed in the viewfinder together with the depth of field scale and aperture value, providing helpful guides for focusing
  • In low light settings when even the subject is hard to see through the viewfinder, the AF Assist Lamp illuminates the subject and assists Auto Focus
  • Even in the case of macro photography where depth-of-field is shallow and focusing requires extreme precision, AF deliver superbly sharp focus for subjects as close as 10cm from the lens
  • After powering OFF the FinePix X100, it enters a sleep state for up to 20 minutes. If the power is turned ON during this time, the FinePix X100 wakes in 0.7 sec (compared with a cold start time of 2.6 sec.) and is ready for you to frame and capture the moment

Not a recommended camera

By

My X100 has the current software but it suffers from shuttler lag. This is not all the time but enough to make me want to see how far I can throw it!!!!

Modern Retro

By

Shoot mainly people, places, things I need to mention that I do own a Canon pro DSLR and like many others I love working with it (I do product shots) but for pleasure its a bit cumbersome to travel with. That said if one goes in with no pre disposition that things need to be done this way or that way then the Fuji X100 is a complete pleasure to work with. The key I found is to spend a day or to just getting to know the X100. After some trial and error you'll discover that you become much more thoughtful about about the shots you take and you enjoy shooting much more. You shoot less and with get higher quality, more dramatic shots - where as before you shot tons and had to go and pic thru and see if there was something worth calling a keeper. The X100 makes you shoot with your heart and less with your head - a pleasure to work with. And while others can beat you over the head with specs, saturation, focus time etc, etc... there is one thing they can't touch... Fun factor.

Fuji x100 - Fantastic grab-and-go

By

from New York, NY  -  Photo Enthusiast

The Fuji x100 is an incredible compact camera. The ergonomics and image quality are top-notch. My only real complaint is the terribly slow and often inaccurate auto-focus system. The camera's sensor shines in low-light situations, but the af basically doesn't even work without the ever-annoying focus-assist light.

Great Camera

By

from NYC  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is a great little camera for street photography or as your everyday camera. Image quality is excellent. Auto focus is great in good light and the manual controls are great for someone looking for more manual control.

Not Ready For Prime Time

By

from Garden City, NY  -  Semi-pro Photographer

The Fugifilm X100 feels like a Beta test camera. The concept, look, and construction are all great. I was really looking forward to having an easy to carry camera with a quality large sensor and professional image controls. My family would complain that I never bring a camera to family events. It was just too much of an effort to pack up the Nikon D4, D800E, or D700 that I use at work. I could live with the quirky menus and some poor control layouts. I could not live with how the autofocus hunted for focus in low light. The electronic viewfinder works way too slow. The viewfinder freezes an image of the picture that was just taken. This slows up follow up shots. The X100 was so slow that I could not take action shots of the family playing horseshoes. I was so frustrated trying to take pictures at a New Year Eve's party. The autofocus hunted forever trying to take pictures on the dance floor in low light. The manual focus works so poorly that it was useless. All of a sudden my D4 didn't seem so heavy. I returned the X100. Now I see that Fugifilm is addressing some of these issues with a new X100s model.

This camera made my DSLR's lonely...

By

from Willimantic, CT  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Excellent results in 99% of lighting conditions. F2-F16 Range very versatile. If used in Auto mode, ANYONE can use it. Manual mode allows unlimited possibilities, film emulation modes are amazing, built-in ND filter very handy. I have used for street photography, landscapes, portraits, macro shots, night scenes, B&W - excellent as well! My Canon 7D is collecting dust because of the versatility and portability of this outstanding camera!

Just takes getting used to fixed lens

By

from Louisville, KY  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is an excellent camera. The only thing about the fixed lens, it takes getting used to not having zoom. (And getting over the anxiety of leaving the house with a camera that doesn't zoom in case you need one.) But once you get over the mental block, it allows you to take great pictures, and not have to lug around a heavy DSLR everywhere you go. Plus, I have found that even for those times where you need more than 35mm, you can still lighten your load by having the X100 in the following ways. First, for those times when I am really worried about having a zoom, but not sure I am going to need it (say Disneyland) I carry my Cannon S95 in my pocket. That way, I am set for just about anything, and it's like having nothing at all. Second, for those times where I know I am going to need a zoom, like the zoo or kids sports, having the X100 lets me carry it for the close up shots, and then carry my D7000 with just the 55-300 VR lens for the zoom. Considering that I used to carry a D700 with the 28-300 lens in those situations where I wanted to cover everything, that is a huge weight savings. And having the fixed 35mm lens can actually be a good thing, b/c it forces you to work a little harder at making a good photo in some situations, instead of just mindlessly zooming in. Finally, to those who say that the menu, etc., is confusing, read Ken Rockwell's User Guide. I spent 30 minutes with that and have no issues with the menu setup, etc. whatsoever. The only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is b/c I think Fuji's price is a little too high. If this camera was more in the $600 range, it would have gotten 5 stars.

Excellent Service /Amazing Little Camera

By

from Newport Beach, California  -  Pro Photographer

I purchase the Fuji X100 about a year after it hit the market. At WPPI I played with the pre-production model and was unimpressed. However....Fuji, IMO has done a great job of listening to its users and made the necessary adjustments and software upgrades that has turned the x100 into an amazing "rangefinder" style highly mobile and stealthy camera solution. After the software upgrades, and a few days of actually reading the online PDF x100 manual.... I'm like: "This is a revelation of a camera." Super compact, very well built, amazing IQ, very easy to use. It's my new cary everywhere camera body. So light I can handle it in the palm of my hand with just two fingers. It's really a joy to use. Brings a new fun and spirit to my photography. Typically I'm totting around my Canon EOS 1D Mark III. Its super heavy and not pleasant to travel with. But the X100 is a joy to take in hand and walk the streets with. I did purchase the optional and very expensive Fuji lens hood. Small niggle, that it does not click into place. Instead is a semi-screw mount. However, I'm afraid it may fall off someday while I'm walking and shooting. I say semi screw mount b/c it doesn't "lock" on to the lens adapter that ships with it. I also purchased 2 extra off brand batteries, and am considering purchasing a one or two more battery chargers due to the fact that the batteries take about 2 hours to charge. With my purchase I also got the Fuji leather case, which I wasn't impressed with. The build was just fine and top quality. However, the body is so sleek and fits in my hands so naturally, the case just kind of gets in the way and feels a bit awkward and clumsy on the beautifully designed body. Today I'll also be getting the Artist & Artisan red silk cable strap and a Match Tech red Boop. The reason for the strap is so that I can go hands free when doing long outings and street shooting and need a break. Bottom line; All round great camera, amazing IQ and super cool looks.
