Q&A

Questions & Answers

Susie A : I have a manual Holga 120N, is this film better suited for 12 or 16 exposures? The camera can do either but the film doesn't seem to do anything besides 16.CHARLES T : A holga can shoot either 16 or 12, depending on which film mask insert you are using. It should have come with both. If there is only one that is large and square and about 6 cm wide, or none, then you will get 12 exposures, so slide the little arrow on the back until it opens the central part of the red window on the camera back.DAVID S : This film (or practically any 120 medium format film) will work just fine with the Holga 120N in either 12 (6x6 cms.) square frame, or 16 frames (6x4.5 cms.) rectangular frame. The camera ships with a pair of masks which you insert inside the camera body behind the lens: one is for 12 frames and the other for 16. This mask is interchangeable, so you can insert one for a roll you want to shoot at 16 frames, then change it to the 12 frame one when you load a new roll of film that you prefer to shoot at 12 frames. IT'S IMPORTANT TO SLIDE THE FILM FRAME INDICATOR ON THE FILM FRAME-COUNTER WINDOW (THE TRANSPARENT RED FILTER WINDOW ON THE CAMERA BACK) TO THE CORRECT SETTING: SLIDE IT DOWN FOR 12 FRAMES, OR UP FOR 16 FRAMES. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO SEE THE CORRECT FRAME NUMBER FOR EACH MODE. Keep in mind that Ilford HP5 is a 400 ISO film, and the Holga has a shutter speed of about 1/100 sec, and is about f/8 on the cloudy setting and f/11 on the sunny setting (these settings are visible on top of the square lens mount on the camera body). If you don't place some kind of light-reducing filter (i.e. neutral density) in front of the lens, it's quite possible that you'll overexpose this film in bright sunlight conditions. If you're going to always shoot in bright sun, you might consider Ilford FP4, or any other 100 ISO film. But if you want to shoot in different lighting conditions, HP5 will be very convenient, but you might want to find a way to use filters with this, or any 400 or higher ISO film, to adjust for brighter or lower lighting situations. Experiment and see what works for your purposes.
jack b : How many exposures, and does this work film work on my Yashica Mat EM Twin Lens Reflex 66 made in the 1960s?BRUCE S : That is a 6x6 format camera, you will get 12 exposures out of it, and it will work with any camera that uses 120 film.margaret b : 120 film and you'll get 12 shotsBRUCE S : Assuming that the camera does is a 6x6cm negative, you will get 12 exposures out of a roll.WAYNE L : Yes will work great. Make sure your meter is accurate. Many aren't.GENE L : Your Yashica Mat 66 was made to use 120 size film and produce 12 6x6 cm ( 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 in) images per roll. Ilford and several other manufacturers make 120 size film with different speeds (sensitivities) that are identified by ISO numbers. The higher the ISO (in the 60s it was called ASA), the more sensitive (faster) the film. Ilford HP5 has an ISO speed of 400, one of the faster films. On your camera, you control exposure by setting the film's ISO number on the exposure meter.ROBERT M : Yes HP5 works great in the Yashica the camera uses 120 size roll film and has 12 exposures per rollERIC F : this film will be fine for the yashica mat, and you should get 12 exposures if loaded properly.KENT S : Using a 6x6 format, you get 12 shots per roll. The film will work just fine in your camera. I use it in a Rolleiflex made in 1951, and several other cameras made in 1937, 1935, 1928, 1914, and 1902. Good luck! Kent in SD
jack b : how many exposures per role?BRUCE S : depends on the format. 6x4.5=15 exposures, 6x6=12 exposures and 6x7=8 exposures. I use a 6x4.5 camera, hence 15 exposures for me per roll.BRUCE S : depends what the format is: 6x4.5=15, 6x6=12, and 6x7=9.LLOYD P : For 2 1/4x 2 1/4 12 exposures.I get 15 on my Zenza Bronica ETRS Lloyd PBARBARA D : Comes in 24 and 36ELSON M : Depends entirely on the camera it's going in. 6x4.5 : 15 or 16 6x6 : 12 or 13 6x7 : 10 As you get into more panoramic formats (less common) the count goes down.REBECCA S : It depends on your camera. Mine is a square-format twin lens, so I get 12. If you're shooting 6x9 I think you get 9, and 16 if you're on a Bronica or Diana with the smaller negs. Hope this helps =)WILLIAM D : 12 exposures in 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 (6 cm x 6 cm)camera format. Best, wdLUCIAN S : This depends on the cameras format. A hasselblad, Mamiya or Rollie TLR shoot 6x6 and the number of exposures is 12. A 6x7 format shoots 10 I think - like a Mamiya RZ or RB body. Finaly, a mamiya 645 (format 6x4.5 shoot more (maybe 18). I hope you understand that this is medium format roll film and will not work in a 35mm camera. Good luck.CECIL E : Usually 8 to 16 depending on your camera's frame size. Common examples: 6x9 equals 8 exposures; 6x7 equals 10 exposures; 6x6 equals 12 exposures; 6x4.5 equals 15 or 16 exposures. Special-purpose panoramic cameras may shoot as few as 3 to 6 exposures per roll but these are less common.JONATHAN L : That depends on the film format of your camera. 120 film fits many different medium format cameras, from 6cm x 4.5cm (~16 exposures), 6x6 or 6x7 (~12 exposures), 6x9 (~9 exposures), 6x12 (~6). The most common size may be the square 6x6 format found in Rolleiflex TLRs, Hasselblads and the like. I have the Mamiya 7, which shoots 6x7, and a Fuji SW690 which shoots the wider 6x9. These films also come in 220 size, which is twice as long. Most modular cameras require a different film back to use 220 (ex. hasselblad). Others, like the Mamiya 6 or 7, or the Fuji 690, you just have to move the film plate around to change the pressure. Some don't like 220 as much and think it tears more easily, or worry that once exposed it is easier to get light leaks on the roll which is thicker on the spool, easier to mess up. I never had a problem with it though. Ilford HP5 is a great all around film!JOEY S : As many as you can getDANIEL L : 12 if your shooting 6x6, something like 16 on 6x4.5 and for 6x7 it's 10 shots

HP5 consistent and flexible.

I enjoyed the consistency and flexibility of this film, especially when developed in Rodinal 1+50. I have tried boutique or small company films, but have had inconsistent results that won't do for assignment work or special family events. I keep coming back to this film, since it has never failed me.

Good Customer Service on Frustrating Experience

This is great film at a fair price. Unfortunately I made a huge order to stock up and then it got stolen off my porch. To their credit, adorama worked with me and stayed on top of UPS to get me a refund. Frustrating experience but Adorama handled it well and I would order from them again.

Great for medium-format shooting

The high ISO of Ilford HP5 offsets the handicap of slower medium format lenses, yet its tonal range is wide and its grain is well controlled.

Ideal for novice film photographer

From my perspective of a novice in film photography, Ilford HP5+ is an ideal b&w film. The exposure latitude is forgiving. The 400 ISO is versatile for a lot of lighting situations. Probably most importantly, it's pretty affordable. I feel comfortable experimenting a bit without being as worried as I would about wasting a roll of $18 film.

beautiful film weirdly packaged

beautiful film! I would suggest y'all start packaging it in metal canisters though, the entire roll is just inside an unsealed black bag inside of the box it comes in so it doesn't feel as well protected from the light as bulk rolls in metal canisters come! thanks though!

Great Film!

This is my go to film for general photography. It has great latitude and a consistent look. I have pushed it to 3200 with great results although I typically shoot it at box speed.

About Ilford HP-5 Plus

FEATURED REVIEWS

Most versatile film

By Sharon K.

Ilford's HP5+ is one of the best films on the market today. Versatility is a word that describes it well. It can be used for fine art photography, street photography, low light, and any number of other situations. With the correct developer you can achive ISO speeds up to 3200! I would not advise this film if you are looking for fine grain.

I really love the look of HP5

By Stephen A.

I've always heard Tri-X is the best black and white film, but to be perfectly frank, I really love the look of HP5. It's not as contrasty, so if high contrast is what you want, perhaps it's better to stick to the classic; but what I do notice is that there is a lot more tonal range in this film, and that it pushes very well. Shooting at speed renders clean images, articulate, detailed, not particularly grainy; pushed to 800 and the grain becomes more apparent but not in an unflattering way.

From the esteemed halls of traditional photography, the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film emerges as a top-tier choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike. This high-quality, ISO 400 film is renowned for its remarkable versatility, making it an ideal selection for a wide array of photographic scenarios, including action shots, available light photography, and general-purpose use.

Crafted to deliver optimal results across diverse lighting conditions, the HP5 Plus thrives when processed with a broad spectrum of developers. Its intrinsic design features a fine grain structure that contributes to excellent edge contrast and sharpness, ensuring that each captured image is imbued with superior quality. The resulting prints boast outstanding brightness and a full tonal range, allowing photographers to express their vision with clarity and nuance.

However, the capabilities of the HP5 Plus extend beyond its standard ISO 400/27° rating. By employing extended development techniques with developers such as ILFORD ILFOTEC HC and ILFORD MICROPHEN, photographers can push the film's sensitivity up to an effective EI 3200/36. This adaptability makes the HP5 Plus an exceptional film choice for challenging conditions, where low lighting or fast-moving subjects require heightened emulsion sensitivity.

Compatibility with all current processing systems is another hallmark of the HP5 Plus, accommodating standard short fixing and washing times without necessitating any alterations to conventional processing methods. Its robust nature ensures that it consistently produces excellent results, even when processing conditions are less than ideal.

For those using automatic 35mm cameras, the HP5 Plus 35mm film comes in DX Coded cassettes, automatically setting the film speed to ISO 400/27°. The cassettes themselves are designed for durability, with firmly affixed end caps that withstand rough handling, and a tangential style that, coupled with the film's low friction characteristics, facilitates smooth film advance, conserving camera battery life.

Lastly, the HP5 Plus is user-friendly in its presentation. The base tint of the film allows for straightforward print contrast assessment on a lightbox, and the film is clearly marked with bold frame numbering for full frames and letters for half frames, simplifying negative identification.

In summary, the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film is a reliable, professional-grade choice for photographers seeking a durable, high-performance film that excels in a multitude of photographic conditions. Its reputation for quality and versatility is well-earned, as evidenced by the glowing endorsements from users who have made it their go-to film for capturing the world in striking monochrome.
