Questions & Answers

Gary A : Is the latest Nikon firmware installed in this camera?... 1.04?ANDREW R : Refurbished goods are shipped with the firmware updates and latest fixes which were completed at whatever stage it was at when we took delivery. Actual firmware version is not specified and may vary depending on when the unit was refurbished and shipped to resellers.
Carrie S : Is this body compatible with other Nikor lenses?RYAN J : An adapter is required to connect with Nikon F mount lenses. It's is the Nikon FT1 and permits F mount lenses to mounted on Nikon 1 (CX mount) bodies. It is worth noting that that any F Mount lens mounted to a Nikon 1 (CX mount) body will have a magnified focal range by a factor of 2.7 (I think). Thus, a Nikon 70-300mm lens will have an adjusted zoom range of 189-810mm when mounted on a Nikon V1 camera.PAULA P : Carrie: You can get the Nikon FT1 Adapter to use your F Mount Lenses on the V1. It's actually pretty fun to put something like a 70-300 on the V1 and use it.BRIAN M : I don't believe so. I believe the only compatible lens' with this body are 1nikkor line of lenses which are made specifically for these camera bodies. Google 1nikkor lens for more info.RICK S : Yes, with a converter. I forget the number on the converter but it does work well. The only issue I have with this camera is the flash. It does not allow for standard Nikon flashes to be used. Also does not have a port to trigger remote flashes or strobes. This makes the use of the camera very limited and is a big weakness in my opinion.JOSEPH I : The series 1 does not use the Nikon F mount. However those lenses can be used with an an FT-1 adapter.DON A : Standard Nikkor lenses will work on this camera with an adapter. The Nikon Adapter is over $200. Standard Nikkor lenses do not fit this camera directly.Gary C : Newer Nikkor S with FT1 adapterTONY S : yes, you can use cx lenses made specifically for the V1 series or, with the FT-1 adapter, use many of the Nikor lenses.PAUL S : Nikon offers two lenses for this model: 10-30 and 30-____ Nikon and third party manufacturers offer and adaptor that is to permit other Nikon lenses to be attached. I have not tried them, and can not comment on their value. PaulMARK M : It will tak all Nikor 1 lenses, and with a converter it can take some Nikor lenses. I know it will not recognize many 3rd party lenses. Look up the converter for specs.JOSEPH S BRAVEN I : The body is compatible with all of the F-Mount Nikon lenses (the ones that go on the large DSLR cameras such as the D3200) ONLY if you purchase the Nikon FT1 adapter which costs approximately $200.00. Without the adapter they will not fit. Great camera; I've taken some great photos both with the Nikon 1 lenses and the larger F-mount lenses with the adapter. Hope this helps. -StanNORMAN S : With the Nikon FT-1 adapter it will auto focus etc with silent wave AF lenses. That adapter will work with other Nikon AF & MF lenses but won't AF, depending on the lens you may have to set aperture manually. After market adapters require you set everything manually. Also there is a large magnification factor because of the sensor size-something like 2.7MICHAEL G : No, only Nikon 1 lenses.

Every Nikon Pro shooter needs one.

Pros: Uses a D600/D800 battery and battery life is excellent. Super fast AF VR on Lenses is better then many pro lenses. Video and stereo mics along with constant & quiet AF and VR creates an excellent recording experience. There is also an input for an externalic. Video and photos are sharp. High ISO has nice grain, superb in BW Cons No standard flash hotshot or adapter.

High Quality Build, Amazing Picts

I'm a film holdout. I shoot with a Nikon F or F2 using mostly TRI-X. I develop and print my pictures as well. I do use digital cameras, I have a Panasonic LX-3, a great camera. Since the cost of the Nikon 1 first gen have dropped, I purchased a Nikon One V1, standard lens and flash. I think the folks at Nikon did a fantastic job. It is a very well thought-out system camera. Congratulations Nikon.

The Rodney Dangerfield of Cameras

"Can't get no respect" summarizes the initial reactions to this camera, especially from those who have never either seen or touched one. Their common themes: tiny sensor, less than perfect image quality, "only" 10MP, too expensive. By the way, all of these are true (except the last in this case). They don't negate the fact that this is an excellent camera, and essential for any wildlife/sports photographer who already has nikon gear and who isn't made of money. Why? Three reasons: first, it is an excellent walk around camera for urban or casual photography, since it is both small and stealthy; second, it is FAST; and third, with the FT-1 adaptor, it gives you a 2.7X teleconverter with NO LOSS OF LIGHT! Have a 70-200mm f2.8? With the V1 & FT-1, you now have the equivalent of a 189-540mm f2.8. (If it even existed, how much would a lens like that cost for an full frame camera?) Put a Nikon 2X teleconverter in the mix (which I have), and your reach goes to 1080mm at f5.6! The V1 is not perfect. It cannot compete in image quality with my D800, and will not replace the D800 for most of my photography, but it does things that the D800 cannot do (extreme telephoto with the FT-1 and fast burst rates). Plus it is an excellent second body to have for city photography (the kit lens is quite sharp). I have been very pleased with the images I have taken so far, and am looking forward to many future "keepers" as I take it into the field for wildlife shots. Again, it is not perfect; and, if this would be your only camera, there are many better choices (although not THAT many for $250!). If you need what this camera can offer, I highly recommend it.

I would buy it again...in fact I did !

...the Nikon 1 series is serious FUN !!! ...the V1 in particular has both the lcd display panel and the evf...it's lightning quick with autofocus and burst rate...has a plethora of available lenses (most affordable), does NOT have a built in flash, so be advised...but it is a pocket-rocket ! ...I would buy it again...in fact I did !

Better than expected

If you are used to a pro or enthusiast level DSLR this will feel a little "cludge" at first. After you figure out how you like the camera set and leave it you'll be fine. I purchased this camera to carry when I didn't want to lug my full frame Nikon bodies around, plus I was fascinated at the thought of using the FT1 to photograph wildlife with a 2.7x crop factor. The adaptor has not yet arrived, but this camera is far better than I'd expected and stands on its own. Clean JPEGs up to ISO800 and if you do some clean up in post (especially shooting NEF)you can get great photos at ISO3200. I've not tried 6400, but I don't expect it to perform well there. Colors are great, it's very sharp with the kit lens and it is easy to handle after getting used to it. Dynamic range seems limited for a new camera. Focus is outstanding, why doesn't Nikon have this kind of focus performance in Live View mode on their DSLR cameras? They've obviously mastered the technology. Since I've purchased this camera 2 of my coworkers have followed suite, they are not enthusiasts but love the camera. I thought Nikon had missed the mark on this camera, but while not a bulls eye it is very close. Overall a great bargain.

Better than expected

I purchased the Nikon 1 V1 (refurbed) with the 10 to 30 mm kit lens and have been pleasantly surprized by its performance. The electronic view finder senses that the camera is at your eye and turns on automatically. nice touch. i shot for a day at an indoor men's conference without flash and was able to get quite accpetable results. not as good as my D600 with an f 1.4 50 mm lens, but still quite good. it's compact and travels well -- autofocus is quick and generally good. my plan is to add the FT1 adapter and use it with several longer focal length F-mount lenses. overall, a very acceptable travel camera especially at the refurb price.

THE ONES OUT OF THE V1 FIT IN WITH THE ONES OUT OF MY DSLR FULL FRAMES AND FOLKS CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE. ADD THE NIKON ADAPTER AND MY 2.8 LONG LENSES GET WAY OUT THERE FOR EVENING BIRD SHOTS. Most Interesting Camera!

I bought this camera out of curiosity! I own a Sony RX100 which also has the 1" sensor. I wanted to see what Nikon did. The fast action is truly amazing. It's also very different in approach. Not your usual PASM on the dial. What I wasn't counting on is the excellent photos it can take. Really good. I don't like not having a flash built in, as I like to use flash when taking pictures of folks in the "wrong" direction (into light). I knew I could count on Adorama to deliver this product as described. It's fine, in fact, feels like new. Thanks for your usual wonderful service.

Good package for the price

When the Nikon Series 1 system first came out I wasn't sure I would spend that kind of money for a very small sized sensor mirror less camera. I shoot Canon for my pro work and I always tried to stick to the Canon system, but after a major disappointment with the EOS M (mainly because of a goofy UI not for lack of image quality) I thought I was done with this category of cameras. Then I came across this very good offer from Adorama, a refurb unit directly from Nikon and I decide to give it a try. It's been a few weeks now and I find myself using the V1 more and more. I forced myself to stop pretending it was a substitute for my DSLR cameras and I use it instead like I once used my old Canon G7: high quality, compact point & shoot. But this Nikon comes with a kick: image quality is way better than my G7 (even with a comparable sensor), AF is lightning fast and reliable and it shoots RAW (NEF) and 3:2 ratio. It's also better in low light conditions and the DR is way better, all in a package that's just slightly bigger. What I don't like: first of all I've been a Canon shooter for a while now, and everything on Nikon cameras is "backward" to me. Second: the small sensor negates any control over DOF and pretty much eliminates any bokeh. Third: not only the camera lacks an internal flash (that I usually deploy as fill-in in backlight situations) but also features a proprietary flash mount that requires a dedicated Nikon unit. Not a big deal, unless you want to be able to use a Pocket Wizard (or any similar device) to trigger any off-camera flash, which I do. A few tips: make sure you upgrade camera and lens firmware to the latest available release - super fast and easy to do. Set the "sleep" time to 5 minutes: it's set to 30 sec by default and you'll find yourself missing a few candid shots while the camera is "waking up", even when you just took a copule of shots a moment before. Also, it will take a little time to get used to the auto detect feature that tells the camera to switch to viewfinder mode every time you bring it to your eye... Finally, make sure you are in a dust free (as much as possible) and wind free situation every time you change the lens: the sensor seems to be mercilessly exposed as soon as you remove the lens!

Enjoying my new favorite camera

So far, I'm tempted to say it's my favorite camera I've ever tried.(And that's considering I've been using a Nikon D80 for the past 6 years, plus tried out a few other Nikons, Sonys, and Canons, such as the d40, D7000, a77, a65, t3, t3i, 40d, 50d, and a few others.) For starters, the V1 is alot of fun to use. It's equiped with both a mechanical and an electonic shutter. When the mechanical one is used, it allows a flash sync speed of 1/250th of a second. Sound-wise, it sounds like the shutter on the Sonys and newer Canons. Now if you use the electronic shutter, that's where things really get interesting. For one, if you select the electronic shutter, and turn the system sounds off in the menu, the camera is completely silent. So you can go along taking shots, and no one else will notice right away.(By the time they notice you took a shot, you'd actually have several shots...) The other major advantage of the electronic shutter are the shooting speeds... In both mechanical and electronic shutter, the shooting speed is normally 5 frames a second. But for folks that shoot programmed auto, that speed is 10 frames per second. (Even though it can also do 30 and 60 frames per second, the focus is locked on the 1st shot, similar to the Sony a65 and a77. At 10 frames per second, you still have control of the focus...) (Anyway, this whole last points is irrelevant for me, since I prefer aperture priority, so it's 5 frames per second for me...unless I play around with that 4k video creation stuff that's being talked about on the net.) The main thing that surprised me when I got it was the build. Despite the way the product photos of the V1 look online, the camera is almost completely metal. All except for the back plate where the LCD and buttons are...In other words, the front, top, sides, and bottom is metal. Magnesiun alloy. Even the kit lens. The only plastic on the kit lens is the rubber zoom grip, the rest is metal and glass...On a whole, a very solid, durable camera. And despite what non-users have said on various forums, the V1 produces crisp, usable, fantastic photos all the way up to 3200 ISO. (yes it looks great up to 3200 ISO...Menwhile, with careful editing 6400 is okay, but only sometimes. For me, 3200 ISO seems to be my consistant comfortable limit with this camera.) Anyway, I really like it so far. I also just ordered a 30-110, and can't wait to try it.

Great Autofocus but poor image quality

I bought this camera looking for a small lightweight travel camera. First impressions, the handling was o.k., the nikkor lense is very nice, the autofocus in single shot is as fast as any pro level DSLR, but the focus tracking missed about 50% of the time. The burst rate is increadable at 10/30/60 frames/sec. I found the menu system a real pain to use, there aren't enought quick setting dials on the body and you have to constantly dig back into the menu system to make necessary changes. This requires you to restore the menu to default settings and then switch the settings in the correct order or you will have to start over again. It's impossible to get this camera into full manual mode, regardless of mode the camera will force into something somewhere you can't change, be it ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed, metering mode, focus control, etc. something always gets locked down. Now, I could probably live with all this nonesense if the image quality lived up to the hype, shooting RAW in bright daylight at ISO 100 and I saw an unacceptable level noise in the shadow detail, this seems to be baked into the image processer as there was no way to dial it down. I think Nikon is trying ot extend the dynamic range by metering to the highlight side and cranking the gain in the shadow areas to get more detail, yes there's detail but its noisy and distracting. Low light perfromance was good, exposure and autofocus were dead on in low light, but again the image quality at anything over ISO 400 was unprintable. I expected so much more out of this camera, very poor attempt by Nikon when Sony and Canon have significantly better offerings at a lower price point. This might be a useful camera for someone who wants causal pics of their kids or dog and shoots in full auto mode, but don't spend the money on the V series instead get the J series which is essentially the same camera without the electronic viewfinder and hot shoe for a whole lot less money I sent this camera back.

Very Nice Product

Image quality is superb. Focusing is very fast and accurate, mimics my Nikon D300. User controls are mainly menu-based, so that takes some getting used to, but not overwhelming. The best use I have for this camera is an alternative to carrying around my heavy DSLR. I also have the FT-1 adapter so my Nikon DSLR lenses can be used on the V1. With the 2.7 crop factor, this makes a great combination for long reaches! This is a very important, but sometimes overlooked, feature for this camera.

Mixed Feelings

I bought this camera in thinking that I would use this as backup for my D7000, but this camera is more geared towards a point & shoot method of photography and does not meet my requirements for using it as a backup. Good points about the camera are that the camera is light, picture quality and low light performance is good for the size of the sensor which means better than a compact but it is not near the performance of a APS sized sensor IMHO. Build quality is excellent, handling is good but you do have to go into the menu a lot if you change exposure modes, metering methods, or AF area modes, if you leave everything on auto this camera will work well for you. AF performance is fast but it still lacks performance for moving objects such as birds in flight, auto racing, etc., over time as I get used to operating the AF area mode in the tracking mode I may change my mind on this. The bad things (improvement items) about the camera IMO. The feature set is lacking given the price you are paying for the camera. There is no programmable function button, there is an "F" button but you cannot change its function. This causes you to have go into the menu to change your exposure, metering, and AF area modes which can lead to missed shots. There is no auto exposure bracketing; I tend to shoot a lot of high contrast pictures so HDR is important to me. Without auto exposure bracketing it makes it a lot harder to do HDR. If do not use HDR this feature will not be missed as much. The picture preview cannot be turned off; this gets downright annoying when trying to take action shots. As soon as you release the shutter button the last picture pops up on the LCD or the EVF for a few seconds. I can understand that this could be useful, but give us the ability to turn the preview off. The camera does not come with a standard hotshoe for flash. This means you have to buy the Nikon dedicated flash for the 1 series which eats up your camera battery and costs about $150 extra. It sure would have been nice to put an SB400 on this camera, but in keeping with the small size of the camera I guess Nikon wanted to keep the flash small, so no speedlights with batteries. It would be nice in the future for Nikon to offer an adapter to fit the accessory shoe on the camera to fit a standard Nikon speedlight. The camera will only display a luminous histogram, or I cannot figure out how to display the RGB channels. I guess we have returned to the days of the D70 only it is worse. At least the D70 had a yellow outline so that it is crystal clear when highlights or shadows were blown out. The V1 is white outline with a white graph which makes it difficult at times to see if highlights or shadows are blown out. Again for the price of the camera Nikon should have given us RGB histograms. The "best shot" and "still motion" shooting modes are a total waste IMHO. You may find a use for them, but I would rather have the above features added rather than this fluff. I was going to return the camera but my wife seems to like it a lot so it solved my problem on what to get her for X-Mas. This camera is not for me but it might be what you are looking for. If the price were about $300 dollars cheaper for the kit I may have thought it was a better value. If I need a point and shoot, there a cameras out there with a better feature set for a lot less money. It may not have interchangeable lenses, but I sure will have a lot more money in the bank. I sure hope that Nikon issues a firmware update sometime in the future to add some of the features that are missing but I not going to hold my breath, Nikon rarely will offer updates to increase the feature set only. Hopefully Nikon will get better at this type of camera and just maybe it will find a place in my bag.
