N M : I'm a dummy as far as cameras are concerned! I want a digital camera that you look at the subject through the lens by putting it up to eye. No on holding it out and look for the subject on a large square! Can you help? Thanks, NM.LUIS C : This camera has a display in the back that will serve as your display. There is no actual eye window that you look through to take the photo. I shoot with a Nikon DSLR normally but bought this item in January for a trip to Brazil given that I wanted something light and small to take. Also can use it on the boat too. Please note that most cameras in this size and waterproof do not have the eye window to take photos. Hope this helps.PHOUTTHALOM H : There is not an eyehole to look through on this the Nikon AW100. The screen is large and very easy to use. When taking a picture little boxes appear to mark where the faces are and how the picture is going to look. i.e. centered Using the screen to take pictures takes the guessing game out versus using the eyehole where the subjects may not be centered or all included.JOHN B : This Camera does NOT have a thru the lens viewfinder. You do need to look at the back of the camera. The wife finds it VERY easy to use & she calls herself a camera "dummy" , which she & you are not . The Nikon AW100 is a great camera for her uses , she takes pictures of her horses & the grandkids a lot . We chose this camera for its waterproof abilities & rugged construction & also its a NikonELAINE O : The Coolpix AW 100 does have a viewfinder to be able to see exactly what you are taking a picture of. We recently took this camera to Antartica and it performed perfectly under some very extreme conditions. Typical Nikon quality with great optics. I have several top of the line Nikon Professional cameras but I often grab this for short vacations or family use. I have made prints up to 20" x 40" with terrific quality. WONOEMI R : Not sure about other digital cameras, but this one has only an LCD panel to look at the subject. No view finder on this one.DAWN G : Yes there is a view finder. This camera has a great digital viewing screen as well.SUSAN B : This camera is NOT the kind you want. What looks like a viewfinder on the front is actually the lens in the top right corner. It's solid glass because they need to provide a secure housing for the lens when it zooms to keep it waterproof. I do have a Nikon D5100 (it's a BIG camera - not an coolpix size). It has a viewfinder and you can switch it to use the viewfinder OR use the screen on the back. I use the viewfinder, myself. Hope this help!RICHARD F : If you want a camera that has an optical viewfinder that "sees through the lens", then you're talking about DSLR cameras. The AW100 viewfinder is "the large square" LCD display.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?SUSAN B : I wanted a camera I could swim with, since I was in Florida for 2 months. What I didn't expect and LOVE is that it's great for rainy days, too!

Not worth the expense

Battery keeps saying exhausted and yet they are all new batteries. Will not recharge and work anymore. Was great at the start but died after 1 year. Too expensive for only 1 year usage.

Wonderful in water, DEAD in the desert.

This camera takes GREAT photos for a point-n-shoot, see attached photo for underwater. I have many Nikon cameras, both Point-n-shoot and DSLR (And film too!) I always expect Nikon to be the best of the best. Unfortunately I cannot say that with this pocket "rugged" camera. This camera has traveled to Hawaii and California and back, weeks snorkeling, and after each use in the water, it has been rinsed and dried, all sand removed and detailed every time. I even store the camera open in a sealed bag with desiccant to make sure moisture is not a problem. And living in Phoenix, our humidity is almost always non-existent. A month ago, I decided to take the camera with me to take a photo of a vintage airplane at our museum. It was our normal summer hot outside, ambient temperature was 117F. I turned on the camera and it powered on normally. Shot a few photos and a video and then the screen went black. The camera still powers on, menus and functions work, but there is no picture anymore. The sensor appears to be non-functional. Just black photos are captured on the SD card or the view screen, no "live view". What was my favorite and babied pocket sized camera is now a piece of junk in the drawer. I expected BETTER from what is supposed to be a "rugged" camera. Especially from Nikon. I am not sure I would trust an expensive purchase of an underwater rated point-n-shoot again.

BROKE IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS!

I bought this camera probably 3.5 years ago and rarely used it. Especially rarely used it in water. I take care of my stuff and keep it in a case. It did not receive a lot of wear and tear. It was taken in less than 5 feet of water and broke(it has a 33 feet limit). For a $275 camera it better last more than 5 years. Of course the warranty is out and Nikon's repair place wants $150 to fix it. I'll pass!

WORST CAMERA

Bought this new for a vacation my husband and I were going on... and for pics of the kiddos summer in the pool. My camera lasted and entire 3 shots underwater. The seal leaked, display disappeared, and the camera never worked again. No underwater pictures of our awesome vacation were taken... This is obviously an ongoing problem as many others have experienced the same thing. When you spend this much money on a product and name, you expect it to work!!! So disappointed.

Got several vacations out of this one from Alaska, NWT to Maui and Kauai

Unfortunately today it died. big Beach wave and dead. Many, many turtle pictures, watery hike photos, cold NWT photos and alas it has passed. I actually feel sad. Was worth the money...only wishe it would have lasted another year or so.

Spent 2 Weeks Under Water - Still Works!

I dropped my AW 100 in the lake on a girls trip about 2 weeks ago. I had hope to come back with gear to find it later(hoping to at least salvage the SD card and the photos). 2 weeks later I was able to go back and search for it. Luckily after about 10 minutes of searching it was found! Not only was it in great shape for spending 2 weeks submerged but it still had a full charge on the battery turned on right away. I was also able to take pictures immediately! If that's not a testament to this camera then I don't know what else is!

Wonderful quick and easy photography

I won this camera in a photo contest a few years ago. A great little camera. There are times when I don't want to carry the heavier D800 or D4, though I usually do. The AW100 takes great photos with wonderful detail and fits easily in a pocket.

very strong

i bought this camera for a 18 day kayak trip in gorgon bay, the camera worked very well and i got allot of very nice pictures. about 10 days in we had a campsite that was about 30ft away from a cliff which had a small stream at the bottom, while i went to go pick some blue berries i left my camera on the ground and one of my friends kicked it off the cliff. he went and fished it out of the stream and turned it on, still works perfectly the only this that heppend was a rock left a large dent in the metal front cover. the dent was so large that it pushed the metal cover off but it is still sealed underneath so i went the rest of the trip with the cover off and when i got home i straightened out with a hammer, re painted it and super glued it back on. if you saw it today you would never guess that it had been kicked off a cliff, especially because nothing everything still works and it is still completely waterproof so i am very happen it did more than what i bout it for so i cannot complain.

Don't waste your money!

After using this camera about 4 times in the ocean, water leaked in and ruined the entire camera. Sent it to Nikon 2 times for repair and they rejected it due to "corrosion". Well the corrosion happened due to the faulty door that leaks. Hello! I will never buy a Nikon again. Terrible service....

Good pictures but the water seal caused non functionality.

I had this for over a year, gifted. I noticed moisture after a couple pool photos but it worked still. At the end of the summer it stopped working and I am positive that it was caused by the water seal failing. Maybe I should have sent it in prior but I was using it every weekend and didn't want to be without it for a couple months. I tried to get it repaired once it failed but was told I would have to pay $150. I could get another for that price. Poor customer service and I see this is VERY COMMON with this camera. Never again and with over $3500 in Nikon DSLR camera equipment. I will go with the company that stands behind its products. Hello Canon, do you want my money?

Shock-proof my butt...buyer beware!

My daughter received this camera as a gift from her grandparents, (who live in the US and purchased from Costco)...who thought paying extra for a shock and water proof camera would make it great for her to use up here in Canada, (where we live), at school for digital media and on our family trips - in the summer hiking, kayaking, boating, swimming, and in the winter snowshoeing or out on the ski slopes... Boy were they wrong! The LCD screen UNDER the glass in this camera shattered the first time my daughter used it...kneeling in a reclining lawn chair in a park, (to get the right picture), she fell about 3 ft to the ground - with the camera around her neck...which shattered the LCD panel - shock proof indeed. Sadly, it took us a while to get the required warranty paperwork and ORIGINAL receipt, (which is required for warranty repair)...only to find that Nikon won't honour the 2-year Canadian warranty here - but requires us to send it to the US for repair - where the warranty is only a year...no exceptions. Estimated repair cost - $140 - plus international shipping both ways, (another $150)...$300 to fix a camera that's $369 brand new at Costco...how's that for "customer service". If you're looking for a "rugged" camera that's shock and waterproof for outdoor and suitable for kid use, steer clear of this camera and Nikon in general.

Great, compact camera for outdoorsy people

I bought this camera for use mostly during my frequent fishing trips. It is my first Nikon purchase. Overall I'm very pleased with it. Colour and exposure of photos are quite good. Likewise, video is good with some tinniness in the audio and rolling shutter artefacts (on fast moving targets) but these are both expected in a camera of this type. Overall the pictures and video from the AW100 aren't as good as those from my DLSR but they are as good, or better, than one can reasonably expect from a camera of this type and price. The camera's controls and menus are logical and easy to use. The camera has enough shooting modes to make photography flexible but not so many as to make it confusing. The 'one touch' video record button is brilliant because the user doesn't have to mess around with menus or rotate dials to switch between shooting photo and shooting video -- you press the shutter button to take a photo or press the video button to shoot a video -- AFAIC every camera should work like this. I generally rely on Photoshop and Lightroom for editing so haven't used many of the camera's built-in filters I can say that the 'glamour retouch' filter works surprisingly well for smoothing skin tones, etc. The autofocus system works well even under low light conditions. Generally the camera feels solid and well-made. I've dropped it a few times from pants pocket height onto hard floors and rocky stream beds and apart from a few scuff marks on the rear LCD panel the camera seems no worse for wear (I should have bought a screen protector, I guess) . The waterproof cover that hides the SD card slot, battery and I/O connectors is an ingenious design that is easy to open even one-handed but cannot be accidentally opened. While fishing, I've tested the waterproofing quite a few times (a couple of times by accident while wading, oops) and so far there is nary a hint of water inside. To my pleasant surprise, the battery lasts a *long* time -- one battery usually lasts me a whole day of fishing. I purchased and carry a spare battery but I've only had to use it a few times. I do have a few *minor* criticisms. First, my AW100 tends to overexpose by about 1/3 stop which isn't very much and may in fact be a reflection of my own bias . The solution is easy: set the exposure compensation at -1/3 stops and leave it there. Second, in some circumstances the digital image processing seems to be overly aggressive and may remove/blur certain types of very fine detail. For example, when shooting a landscape of trees I find that the small branches of the trees (in the distance) are much blurrier than they should be. This is not just my observation as several online reviewers have also noted this issue. I'm assuming Nikon could probably decrease the noise reduction via firmware update if they wanted to but no firmware updates are available. Third, the flash seems overly bright and harsh at close distances but to be fair this is a fault of many compact cameras. Fourth, the small size of the camera and it's slick surfaces can make it a bit tricky to hold when wet. For future versions perhaps Nikon might give some thought to making it a bit grippier? Notwithstanding these minor shortcomings this camera has generally exceeded my expectations and I am very glad I bought it. With it I have been able to take pictures and video under harsh environmental conditions in which I would not used my pricey DLSR because it would have been destroyed by water, sand, salt, and/or impact. And because it is so small, I can carry the AW100 in my pocket almost any time I'm outside and so I've been able to take some great pictures that I otherwise wouldn't have. I recommend the Nikon AW100 to anyone who needs a rugged, compact camera.

Joguei dinheiro fora.

Poor focus, poor image quality

I'm very disappointed with this camera. It doesn't seem to be up to Nikon's usual high standards. The first problem I noticed was the autofocus wasn't working properly in video mode. I was filming a waterfall, I wasn't moving around and was shooting straight at it. The results were a blurry mess. The second problem I noticed was when I used the telephoto to pull in distant objects, the resulting images looked like blurry watercolors. (By the way, I wasn't at full telephoto.) I certainly expected a better resolution from a camera sporting a CMOS sensor at 16+mp. I doubt I will continue to purchase Nikon gear. It's a shame as I've been a devout customer for over 30 years.

All weather camera, goes everywhere, easy to use

My AW-100 has been in the back pocket of my cycling jersey for hundreds of bicycle rides over thousands of miles. It's the camera that is there when I want it. Easy to use, takes a good picture or 1080p movie on a moments notice.

Big disappointment

I received this camera as a birthday gift. I used it a few times in a pool and it worked just fine but when I took it with me on my honeymoon to the Caribbean two months later, it broke. It took a few pictures at the beach and then it just simply stopped taking pictures. It wouldn't turn on at all. I got out of the water, dried the camera up and opened it. The memory card and battery were damp and there was sand in there. I knew not to open this compartment when in the water so I know it wasn't my doing. This clearly seems like a malfunction. Unfortunately, the camera broke on the very first day of the honeymoon. Very disappointed.

Excellent for the Outdoors person

I love this camera! It is great for hiking, kayaking and camping. Takes great outdoor shots and HD is excellent. This camera in NOT recommend for indoor shots, it has a very bright flash. Which is better near the campfire. But for the avid outdoor trekker, it a great companion to capture those events with great pics and HD video.

Perfect travelling camera

I was looking for a camera that would accompany me on my travels and suit my needs. I don't do well with delicate things so my friend suggested I get this one. I did and for me it's perfect. It takes great photos, is resistant to me dropping it, and is a good size. It's been with me to Florida, Ontario, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Vietnam. Next up is the UK and I have no plans to bring a different camera. I use either the automatic setting or whichever setting suits the subject best and have had no issues. It also takes great panoramic shots. I take pictures for myself, didn't really read the manual but it's an easy to use camera. My only complaint would be that drops of water have a tendency to stay on the lens after you bring it out of the water and it can be difficult to remove them without a towel. I included some pictures of my travels, all taken by me. 1. Shot of produce in the market in Hanoi, Vietnam. 2. Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls, Ontario. 3. Younger cousin swimming underwater shot in our hotel pool in Orlando, Florida. 4. Night lights in Hoi An, Vietnam. 5. Two Red Doa women sewing in Ta Phin, Vietnam 6. A sea anemone through glass at Sea World in Florida.

All Around Performer

My wife and I were looking for a replacement for our aging point and shoot camera that is over 8 years old and was no longer meeting our demands of features and picture quality.I was looking for better low light and picture sharpness and my wife was looking for a camera that did not require intricate menus that would take forever to setup just to take a few quick shots. We also were looking for a camera that was tuff enough because of our outdoor needs. So far we have really enjoyed having a rechargeable system instead of having to feed batteries to the camera Gods after every one to two days outings. So far it has exceeded our expectations and even though we are still learning the best menu settings for our layouts we are very pleased. I would highly recommend a filter kit that you can get online so that you can take advantage of the best result for images taken in very sunny settings and under fluorescent lighting. The only thing that I would have liked to have was a manual override for shooting but with wide range of image settings it really is not necessary. If you are looking for an all weather point and shoot you will not be disappointed.

Camera with low quality - not work under water correctly

After buying the camera at Costco Orlando , FL , took it for a trip in the Caribbean to sub aquatic photos . On tour in Grand Cayman , stingrays , after taking some pictures of stingrays underwater , the camera stopped working erasing the display a strange noise like a vibrating motor , and then did not work anymore ! I opened the camera after , and it was humid inside, and could only remove the memory card with the photos and returned the same at Costco . I was disappointed with the product as we dive only 1 meter deep , ie , in the shallows , and this could not happen. I'm disappointed .

Easy to take wonderful pictures

We just returned from a 6 week National Park tour of Southwest America. I took over 600 pictures and was very happy with the quality and ease of use. It works well in all lights and distances. It is easy to carry while hiking and fits well in a small pocket on the motorcycle. My friends were amazed with the beautiful pictures.

Fantastic result

Prior to my purchase, I read a few comments and I was somewhat concerned, I guess my expectation was lowered accordingly. I am 120% satisfied and can't believe the quality of the videos. Worked great until screen broke

I was happy with this camera the couple months that I had it, until the screen broke. The screen did not break from being dropped however. The shock proof feature is fine, but the camera accidentally got run over. *** It would be nice if the camera had a peephole incase the screen does break. The screen cracked and blacked out. The camera could still take and upload pictures, but it was terribly annoying to have to guesstimate that I was getting the right shot.

Amazing GPS enabled camera!

Great camera for snorkeling

I got this camera in January 2012 and have already taken over 7000 shots with over 6000 of them underwater while snorkeling in the Red Sea. The camera has held up well and given me the opportunity to capture a tremendous variety of quality pics. It does best is the shallower water with good light which is pretty easy to do in this part df the world. the lower light shots have more noise but that is easily handled in post processing software.
