Great point and shoot or backup for DSLR
The image quality of the P5100 is amazing at base ISO. I've taken scenic pictures that were difficult to distinguish from those taken from my DSLR. Where it's weakest is at anything above ISO 200 (ISO 400 if you print smaller than 8x10) or for fast moving subjects because it's sometimes slow to acquire focus. I compared it to my Canon G10 and it was a toss-up at under ISO 200. I also love being able to use one of my Nikon Speedlights since it makes a huge difference for indoor shots.
Really nice point and shoot
I usually shoot D 300/200 SLR's so the point and shoot digicam shutter lag takes getting used to. Otherwise, has everything and more of what I wish to have in a pocketable camera. Adorama hit a home run getting Nikon refurbs to their customers at this price! Thanks, I'm still smiling a month later!

The new ExPEEDTM image processing system combined with enhanced high sensitivity capabilities to ensure the best picture quality. The ExPEEDTM image processing system enhances noise reduction and improves the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio that preserves image quality even when shooting at higher ISO settings. The P5100 extends the light sensitivity range to ISO 3200, which makes it easier to capture fast moving subjects, even in lower light conditions.
Simple Yet Advanced Functionality P5100 offers a new mode dial which provides quick access to a selection of 15 different scene-optimized modes, movie modes, and macro mode. The new graphical user interface has enhanced the pop-up design, and allows for more precise menu navigation and interaction. These technologies, referred to as "Nikon In-Camera Innovations" include In-Camera Red-Eye FixTM, D-Lighting, and Face Priority AF. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically detects and corrects red eye, a common condition that occurs in flash photography.
