Great Nightime Photos

Bought this camera specifically for a trip to Disney World with our grandchildren. I can't say enough about how impressed I am with this camera's "Night Landscape" setting. I got beautiful shots of the electrical parade, fireworks at the castle, illuminated buildings and reflections in the water. Also being able to record movies with the press of a single button and that 10x zoom just made this the perfect camera to take on a trip. I carried it in a pocket of my very small purse. I also own a Nikon D300s which is spectacular but I didn't want to bring a DSLR on this trip. I also purchased an extra battery which I never had to use. You will not be disappointed by the S8100 in any way.

Simply awesome

Bought this as a gift for my fiance and would gladly buy one for myself. I am a DLS user and this camera exceeded my expectations in every area. The HD video is just awesome and the picture quality in low light is remarkable.

I wanted to like this camera

I really wanted to like this camera. It has a really nice lens with great range, the build quality and overall feel is excellent. The LCD resolution is fantastic and the camera is a joy to shoot with. The burst mode is good and auto focus quite solid. As for the bad, the image quality could be great except the color processing and accuracy are absolutely terrible. I tried adjusting so many settings to get this right (white balance, hue, saturation, etc.) and I never could. I even got a second camera due to a defective flash on the first and it performed the same with poor color reproduction. I really hated this because I liked the camera, but I don't always have time to do multiple shots and color tweaks in my shooting needs. While I enjoy full manual shooting (which this camera does not have BTW) and tweaks, often I just want a good crisp image in a P or scene type mode where good memories aren't ruined with flat colors and poor color accuracy. As much as I hate to give up the extra zoom I'll be going to a Canon S95 which I know will give typical crisp Canon images with lower noise using the bigger 1/1.7" sensor.

Not Disappointed!

I did some research on many Point and Shoot Cameras and decided to try the Nikon S8100. I know there might be some more with more bells and whistles and more manual control, but that is not why I bought this camera. If I want manual control, I will just use my D700. I compared many brands at low light and zoom features and image stabilization. I read pro's and con's for all point and shoots. I do mostly landscapes and occasional portraits. I did some test shots in low light and it will shoot at 800 with no problem. I believe I can shoot at 1600 and use a little noise reduction and still get a great image. No point and shoot will be comparable to a DSLR anyway. If you want low noise capabilities, then go with a DSLR! I took some test shots with the camera in AUTO mode and macro mode. The images are very sharp and I was amazed at it capability in shooting in fairly low light without using the flash. You can shoot 5 frames in about one second! You have many scene modes if you want to use them but you can adjust manually the AF metering and metering area for exposure. You have adjustments for Exp Compensation and Vividness just like the Nikon DSLR. It also has the VR image stabilization that works great! It can also do pano's! Overall, I think the camera will serve my purpose! No complaints. Happy Nikon owner!

Nikon S8100 better than Sony HX5V

After extensively researching and trying out the Nikon S8100 and the Sony HX5V I've came to the conclusion that even when both are great point and shoot cameras the S8100 delivers the best image accuracy an photo quality out of the two. The S8100 is designed and built with the photo enthusiastic and the seasoned photographer in mind but most importantly it does what Nikon does best; quality photography. You could get couple of extra features on the HX5V that you won't get on the S8100 (GPS and a panoramic sweep features) but for the most part these two cameras are almost identical when specs are compared side by side. However, if you have the opportunity to try them out you'll find out that the difference lays on how Nikon's technology processes images with much accuracy even when both have the same sensor. (Nikon's being a hair bigger which is a good thing). Other thing to consider is the lens in the S8100, in my opinion is a superior lens. For example. It has a lens correction component that gets the warp effect you get with HX5V when full zoomed out photos are taken. One negative aspect I found on the S8100 though was the noise captured by the mics when using the zoom on video mode. In conclusion, if you strive for image quality and reliability then you'll find out that this Nikon S8100 is prabably today's (11/06/10) best point in the market.

great camera, not quite perfect

Takes really good pics in low light without the flash. Really amazing that the camera is so small with all the features. Build quality seems excellent. Only cons so far: flash can be too bright & make photos not natural looking. No way to adjust flash output. Camera could really use either a "sport" mode that forces a fast shutter without reducing image size or a shutter mode that would allow you to directly set the shutter speed. Flash issue is less of a problem though because the camera makes great pics in most lower light situations without the flash (ISO 400-800). A firmware update should be able to fix the issues & camera then would be a definite 5 star product.
