Bought this for my wife to move her into the dslr world. Funny how often I sit my D300 and use it myself. VERY lightweight and with a 35/1.8 or 50/1.8 on the front it's an exceptional second body for events or primary light use travel setup. Great system for beginners, too. Highly recommended.

This camera is very good for the average guy who just wants to snap very good pics of the family and friends. It is very cheap, takes great nikon lenses and is good in low light. This compact DSLR is a little bit old now compared to the newer models but still takes really good photoes. This would be ideal for the young kids who are now wanting something more. Easy to carry and easy to use i would say give it a go if you realise that it is not all about having 18 megapixels!

Excellant build quality, all really necessary features and modest price = just a great camera value! Small and light but a heavyweight at simply producing really great shots. Menus are very intuitive making this little gem a breeze to use. A fine photographic tool for pros and novices alike. I can't imagine why Nikon discontinued this product!

Shoot it almost always with the 35-F/1.8, which makes for a very light, fast combo. Camera was inexpensive enough that it goes everywhere with us. If you can get one of these, do it.

I bought a "refurbished" Nikon D40 from Adorama and when it arrived it didn't work. The LCD monitor was white - just like a TV with no signal. [...] ship it to Nikon for repair. Now it's back and it's a great camera. In the last three weeks I've bought six Nikon lenses, [...]

I have bought two refurb. nikon d40's and they both were like new and clean. I bought one for me and one for a gift. I wouldn't hesitate at all to buy refurbished from adorama. I love my camera and keeping it even if I upgrade to full-frame. I did notice the price went up though but still worth buying, the image quality is excellent, it beats the d3100. Even my 8x10 enlargements are wonderful. Both cameras had under 2000. actutations on them when I receieved them.

Most of my shooting is portraits/people. I've used the Nikon D50, D60 and most recently the D90. Went back to this D40 because it produces the LOWEST NOISE and renders outstanding flesh tones and overall color renditions. The 2.5 frames/sec more than fast enough. I prefer prime manual focus lenses, and the built-in electronic rangefinder is a plus-plus! EXCEPT, if you really NEED Video...you should be buying a Video camera instead (even a modest video camera produce better video than overpriced still cameras that are not basically designed for that). Would you buy a Video camera to take Still Photos? 'Nuf said! If you're lucky enough to find a good Nikon D40 (with low shutter activations and in excellent condition...grab it!).

The Nikon D40 was my first DSLR and it's still the camera that I grab first. It's light weight, the batteries hold their charge for a l-o-n-g time and the 18-55mm kit lens is a very sharp workhorse. I have several lenses that won't autofocus with a D40, but I can still use 'em. And heck, I grew up with manual focus - turning a focus ring doesn't exhaust me. Sure, I have other cameras with advanced and perhaps more convenient features, but the D40 may be the best value, the biggest bang for the buck, that Nikon has ever offered.

This camera isn't as extravagant as the other Nikon D-models, but, it definitely delivers! It's easy to use (as long as you read the manual or watch some instructional videos). It is light and durable. Remember: You can have the most expensive and extravagant camera equipment, but if you don't know how to use it, it's pointless. Don't be discouraged by the model; YOU make the photographs, the camera just takes them. You can view my photos at: [@]

Light to carry and inconspicuous. Good for street photography Great for colour prints up to 20 inches Kit lens very sharp but CA not corrected in camera Great piece of kit that is a pleasure to own and use 30,000 shutter actuations and still looks like a new camera Pls note typo above in 'pros' - flash sync is 1/500th second. Very useful. Surprisingly rugged Jpeg's very useable

I finally made the jump from film slr to Dslr. If you not printing bigger then 8x11 save the extra money for a good lens and buy this camera. Very very fast and easy to use, no fiddling through menus to adjust settings, they are very accessible. The kit lens is great and my old AI lenses perform flawlessly with the D40. Highly recommend this camera!

Can't beat this camera for the money. 6 megapixels is plenty and it gives it better low light performance than the D60, D40x, and D5000. Now that I've upgraded to the D90, I really miss the 1/500th sec flash sync. Very useful for fill flash in normal light.

I just got mine two days ago. There are dust particles on the optical viewfinder. Worst thing is there's an non-removable black dot on every picture I take.

His is my first DSLR and I am so glad I bought it. Great pictures without and pretty simple to use. Seems like just enough feature to allow me to do lots of things but that many they are a distraction. Easy to understand and change settings which allows me to focus more on composition etc. Love it

Just got it yesterday. Great Camera! Takes great pictures. Amazing clarity. I am using my non AF-S 80-200 zoom from my N70 and it works great with manual focus and autamatic metering..

Easy to use ... fabulous pictures....great quality. I was so worried about buying a refurbished camera... so now I have bought three of them and they are all just like brand new. We are so pleased and can't wait to give them to our sons for Christmas. Adorama has been fantastic to deal with and very accommodating.

I received my camera and its in excellent/mint condition, no signs of use or dust! Very happy with the picture quality, Ken Rockwel is correct about this camera, i sold my D80 for this and have no regrets at all. I must say i am really surprised that reading the exif data i discovered that the camera had 4700 shutter actuations, thats much more than i expected, but still it looks brand new, no marks or signs of use at all. Anyway i gotta use it more to get the most from it.

Very slow focus in low light. Good in normal light but the auto focus mode is a pain. The focus area picks up the closest object and not the part I want. The three settings do not seem to make a difference.

I bought this camera package with the standard kit lens and have had no problems so far. Most noticeable is the fast shutter release from my old P & S Pentax Optio 450. Also very light in weight compared to old Pentax film SLR I owned years ago. I use for landscape/cloud time-lapse photography (with separate intervalometer). Also I purchased this SLR to use for night bulb photography--which my Pentax P & S did not have--for meteor showers and NLC (Noctilucent Cloud) photos.

Pros: takes great pictures; once focused, it is easy to continue snapping pics; easy to zoom in on pic during review; fully charges quickly Cons: unable to frame subjects using the LCD screen like pt and shoots do; very bulky compared to pt and shoots; owners manual not very comprehensive

Unless you download additional information from Ken Rockwell on the camera the manual leaves a lot to be desired.

I've never bought a refurbished product before, and was a little worried -- but this camera is just like new. Image quality is great, and I was up and running on it -- shooting in manual -- within a day.

Very happy with Refurbished D40
By Will
I am very happy with the D40. This is my first SLR, and it is a very good choice for a beginner. I don't feel that 6 MP causes any limitations, unless you're producing very large prints. The high ISO quality is very good. Overall, I have no complaints with the image quality.I ordered the REFURBISHED D40. [...]This is a quality camera, and I am confident in Nikon reliability.
