Best starter Pro I could ask for

If your thinking about going from a point and shoot to a DSLR this is the camera for you. I have used friends cameras and they have been swell but the Nikon is solid high quality with a world of resources to suppliment any lack of knowledge one might come into the field with. My only recommendation is get a 50mm lens. While the kit lens served it's purpose well for a while; having the more expensive 50mm takes my pictures to another level; both because of the lens and because I get inspired off it. The refurb was in perfect condition.

Loving It!

[...]Every thing works like new and I love the pictures I am getting from it. Auto focus does have a hard time finding something to focus on sometimes, switching it to manual works in those cases. Wonderful features for the price. I am very glad I got this over the D3000. Night photos turn out great. The video is nice, but drains the battery pretty fast.

Just like new

Just to be on the safe side, I wait until I've had the camara for two months before I write this review. If there's any problem with this refurb product it should have shown. So far it's working very well and I'm very satisfied with it. For entry level DSLR users like me, it's the perfect camara for this price.

Nearly brand spankin' new

I was worried I'd get a heavily used one since Ive never bought refurb before. It came today and looked brand new and only had 30 shutter actuations.... couldnt believe it. Maybe Nikon reset the shutter count? Is that even legal? Well, so far so good. Takes amazing pics... anybody could pick up a dslr now days and be a pro

not very happy

It is my first DSLR. I did lots of homework before finally decided to buy the Nikon refurbished camera from adorana. [...]The camera came with 3175 shutter clicks last night. I am not very happy about that. The image is not very good maybe due to the low light. Just hope the camera would have good performance.

Super Deal! Great Camera Kit.

I was little concerned how a refurbished camera would perform. My worry completely gone after I received the camera kit. It looked and performed as brand new. I also checked the first photo I took and it showed only 47 shutter clicks on the body. I am amazed how quiet the shutter noise is and the image quality is top notch. The only thing I like to see is a slight larger body and hand grip (totally personal). I noticed that I always changed the AF points by accident due to my hand keeps pressing on the four way wheel button. Over all this a super deal. Try to get one before they sold out! You won't regret it.

Great Camera

I have had this camera for about two months now and I really love it. It is simply amazing at taking portraits, especially up close shots. All in all I think this is a wonderful camera even if it was a refurbished one.

Buyer Beware of Refurb

I shopped for weeks, did exhaustive research, read what seemed like hundreds of reviews, and decided on the Nikon D5000. [...] But, and its a big but. The camera worked for one day! Appearance wise the camera and lens both refurb looked absolutely brand new....not a single blemish....absolutely mint condition, I was stoked. I took approximately 100 pictures the day I received it just messing around.....and was sooo pleased with the results. But, the next day after work I went to power it on............and nothing, the camera would not turn on! [...] Just beware when purchasing a refurb....it was obviously returned to Nikon for some defect, and in my case Nikon had not sufficiently tested it before sending it out for resale. With the added expense and time lost....my excellent deal isn't so excellent anymore.

AWESOME!!!!!!

I purchased this camera to take pictures of my son in baseball. I started with auto mode but researched ,learned and tweaked and took action shots my second time shooting in shutter priority and let me tell you it is night and day.[...]I couldn't be happier with the refurbished product I received. I also ordered a 55-200 MM refurbished zoom lens[...] This camera is awesome. if you are on the fence just buy it you wont be sorry. I also recommend buying some magic lantern DVD's. I am not sure if they have one for the D5000 but I borrowed one from my friend for a D90 and the menu's and settings are almost identical. The DVD was a huge help.

Great deal!

My budget left me to choose between a new D3000 and the refurb D5000. I have had good experience with refurb cameras in the past, so I could not resist the D5000 (especially since it had been refurbished by Nikon). It was a great decision! The camera arrived with 1237 previous exposures, but you cannot tell it by the looks or operation of the camera. Image quality is absolutely supurb. The learning curve is a little steep (I haven't used anything except a point and shoot since I sold my Olympus K1000 about 15 years ago) but I'm learning quickly. For me, this was the perfect camera at the perfect price!

What a GREAT starter camera.

I've been away from photography for 20 years. I was given this camera and was told to "Get back to the FUN!" This camera has made it a simple transition. I used it in AUTO mode for the first month, now I use the APETURE mode. It's lightweight, easy to grip and metering is easy to read. The best feature is the auto focus. I'm from the old school...shot with CANON F-1's totally manual everything. This new technology is a blast to play with. Grateful to be back at my favorite hobby with a totally new opportunity awaiting me.

great deal on a great camera!

I bought this camera to use after a serious auto accident left me shooting one handed while I rehab my other arm. I sold my Nikon d300 and shoot with this camera and love it. My Nikon d700 is a great camera but too heavy for work while I'm injured. The quiet shooting mode is reason enough to keep this in my bag after I recover.[...]

A smart purchase and I would recommend t

Like others, I was hesitant to purchase refurbished, but the other reviews being mostly positive convinced me. It comes in brand new condition and works great right out of the box. My co-worker who bought a new one 9 months ago for over $1000 is very jealous of this great deal. This was a replacement for my Canon Rebel digital that I misplaced on a trip in Italy. I got off of a train and left it behind, not one of the smarter things I have done, but it gave me a reason to get something that could also do video.

Great camera as a great price.

I bought this for my wife. A great little camera, with superb image quality. I'm not use to the tiny viewfinder but that's how it goes with these APS-C cameras. This is the refurbished version and it is as new but does come in a "refurbished" box.

Awesome Camera at an Awesome Price

A litter nervous about getting a refurbished product, but decided the savings were worth the risk, and it definitely was. Product seems perfectly new out of box. Over the last week that I've had it, I've taken a few hundred pictures and everything seems to be working perfectly. Picture quality is great and controls are simple and plentiful. Haven't charged the battery yet, just put it in as it came and the meter still reads full battery! Perfect camera for a first time DSLR owner like me! Ken Rockwell gives a useful beginners guide to the camera.

Great Bargain

At first I was afraid that this product was also in the Service Support Notice made by nikon on august 12, 2009. But I enter the serial number and there is no problem with my camera. So far, everything is great, the product is mint condition, please dont expect the same packaging as seen in the new products, you will receive a nikon box with the "reaconditioned" label in the outside. Lens will be in a separate box. Buy the bundle with the nikkor 55- 200 VR. Great choice.

A very good deal

I purchased this camera when I found out about the deal. The machine came to me and has worked perfectly right out of the box and I have no complaints. The image quality is very fine and the color is actually better than my D40. This refurbished camera is now a good backup to my D40 which I got new from a local camera shop here in Houston.

Great Camera

I purchased a D40 for myself earlier and found that my wife was using it all the time and I still needed a camera. :) This is a great camera and better than the D40 with the same image sensor as the D90. The refurbished by Nikon model came to me LIKE NEW in every way. I am quite pleased and am enjoying superior pictures.

At this price, its a no brainer! A+

Two months since my purchase and I still can't believe how good the deal was. [$] for a top notch camera and lens? It still blows me away. Its left me plenty of cash left over for another lens or two. It packs a serious punch performance-wise and is small enough to take just about anywhere. I can honestly not think of a single drawback on this thing. High MP, good shutter speed/ISO range, quiet mode, bracketing, all for $525! Its a no brainer!

Best Nikon DSLR for those on a budget

For those on a budget, the D5000 provides the same image quality as the higher end D90 and D300 without many unncessary "extras" most of us never use. This is a solid camera, easy to use, offering numerous features at an affordable price.

D5000 for a D3000 price

Upon arrival, it was hard to tell that this camera was refurbished. All my worries were laid to rest once I opened the boxes, put the lens on and starting shooting. This is my first DSLR. I was initially looking at getting the D3000, but the upgraded sensor, live view and ability to shoot video made the decision all too easy. New D3000 or refurb'd D5000? The money I saved will be going toward another lens! Upgrading from a point and shoot, all the controls had me flustered. Needless to say, I wouldnt hesitate to buy another refurbished Nikon camera or lens.

Very Happy So Far

Just got this package the day before yesterday and i love it so far. The package came very well done, everything was intact - which was a big worry since am an international customer. To my suprise, both the camera and the two refurbished lenses i bought all seemed new, only that they came with boxes clearly marked as reconditioned products. Otherwise no complaints so far... Havent used it much, but today charged the camera full and have so far shot 944 images and the battery indicator on the camera is still full!!! The quality of the pictures is very good, the lenses work exceptionally well and though the camera feel abit small for my big fingers, i have no complaints so far. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to get started, or get serious with photography.

About Nikon D5000

The Nikon D5000 DX-Format Digital SLR Camera features an innovative Vari-angle monitor for an exciting new take on photographic expression. It adds a flexible dimension to Live View shooting, which vividly shows your subject in real-time. Now with this freely adjustable monitor, taking great shots and movie clips with Live View is easier and more enjoyable than ever.

Nikon's DX-format CMOS sensor with 12.3 effective megapixels records all the details of the original scene for breathtakingly lifelike photos. Shadows and highlights reveal exceptional details while a remarkably high signal-to-noise ratio vastly reduces noise - especially important when shooting at high ISO settings.

The D5000 enhances Live View shooting by giving you a choice of different display views. Minimize displayed camera settings when you want an uncluttered view of the scene, or show vital information at a glance for situations requiring a comprehensive readout of settings.

Different types of photos require different focus strategies and the D5000 has the right Live View autofocus mode for any occasion. Whether it's a unique expression, dynamic action, or a small object in a big composition, the four easily selectable modes help you stay focused for sharp results.

The D5000 makes it point-and-shoot simple to acquire clear, tack-sharp photos when composing via the bright, informative optical viewfinder. Whether your subject is off-center, moving fast, or completely unpredictable, the D5000 has the right autofocus solution.

The D5000's normal ISO range of 200 to 3200 can be expanded to cover ISO 100 to 6400, letting you capture the natural ambience of a warmly lit room or vibrant street scene when the use of flash or tripod isn't an option. The extended sensitivity is also ideal for shooting sports, allowing fast shutter speeds to freeze action.

Nikon D5000 Features

  • 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor: Coupled with Nikon's EXPEED image processing and NIKKOR optics, breathtaking picture quality is assured.
  • D-Movie Mode with sound: Record 720p HD movie clips enhanced by NIKKOR interchangeable lens quality and versatility.
