Questions & Answers

Eric Z : Alistair confirmed that this battery increases frames per seconds for D800, So does the en-el18 increase the frames per second to 6 in FX mode, or in DX mode only? Thank you in advanceLES H : I have a D4 and do not have a problem with the Nikon EN-EL18. It lasts.WILLIAM C. Z : Yes, the En-El18 will increase frames per second because the DX mode take less processing time to record the pictures to the memory cards, because the DX mode needs less recording space. I use the En-El18 in my MB-D12 multi-battery pack to extend my photographing time, not to see how was fast I can shoot pictures in rapid succession. That is the skinny of it.NIR R : I Eric! This battery increase the fps in DX mode!STEVEN V : I believe it increases to 6fps in DX & 1.2 and to 5fps in FX mode. It's an expensive option for that 1fps! PETER G : Short answer:Sorry, I don't know. Long answer: I use my EN-EL18 in a Nikon D4. Never use DX mode. Don't see the point. I capture full frame even with DX lenses. Some give significantly more than DX coverage. I crop in post processing. My maximum frame rate depends on the amount of processing the camera has to do for each shot. So, if I go to manual focus and exposure, in theory I'll get a faster frame rate than if I use automatic focus and exposure. Why? Camera "thinks" less for each shot. In my D4, it's a great battery. My only gripe is the recharger. Even though it has two slots, it charges only one battery at a time; first one, then the second after the first is fully charged. Buffer size and write-to-card speed also affects frame rate. Bottom line: I suspect there are more things that affect frame rate than the battery type.Jay H : I purchased the extra battery for my D4, but if I remember the documentation for the D00, no it does not increase speed. The D800 is different from the D700 where is you add the battery pack the frames per second increases.
Eric Z : will this battery increase frames per second on the D800?Dave L : On SOME Nikon cameras, adding a NIKON battery grip will increase fps. ie D300, D700.NORMAN S : Do not believe you can use this battery on D 800 unless it would/will fit on battery backFRANK H : Frame rate is a function of the camera not the battery. Few years back I bought a cheaper knock off and what I learned from that was the cheaper battery did not last as long but frame rate was the same. I have owned the Nikon D2X, D3 and have been using the D4 for over a year. The D4 with slower memory card cannot meet the specks but with the Sony XQD-S Memory Card S-series you can blaze away at 10 plus frames per second for 200 frames.ALISTAIR P : Yes - 6 Frames per sec is possible - but you also need a fast card if you shoot raw & JPEG because of the file sizes.YANNICK L : I use this battery for a D4. Safer to check with the Nikon manufacturer. It all depends too on the type of lens you use, I own a 200-400mm and with the VR on , it really sucks energy .GAVIN B : This is not a battery for the D800 it is for the D4RYAN A : This battery WILL NOT fit the D800. This battery is only for the Nikon D4.
Shopper : Is this battery good for the Nikon D800?LAUDENCIO O : Unfortunately I don't have an input. However; due to part number/specification and design configuration difference, I will attempt installing unless slated in the owners manual as an alternate.Richard G : Yes, it will work with optional MB-D12 multi-battery power pack. The battery is too large for direct use with the D800.Richard G : Yes. The MB-D12 vertical battery grip for the Nikon D800/800E can be used with the EN-EL18 battery. However, you have to purchase the Nikon BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover separately to adapt the MB-D12 for this battery. The MB-D10 for the Nikon D300/700 also required a separate battery chamber cover to use the large EN-EL4a battery.JOHN P : The Nikon D800 uses the EN-EL15 as its standard battery (same as the D7000). However, if you attach the optional vertical grip (the D12), you can use EN-EL15, or, for much better run time, the Nikon EN-EL18 battery.

Battery FAIL but Still a Must-Have

This is a really bad product that essentially you have to buy in order to be sure your equipment is covered under warranty. I have all kinds of high performance lithium batteries across a variety of products. Even batteries from Chinese makers will hold a charge for a year. As a customer I would think this basic feature of a battery would be extremely high on Nikon's product development requirements, especially for an item that is going to retail. Inexcusably, these batteries drastically lose their charge over a period of several weeks. My old Nikon batteries back in the days of the D300 and D700 never had this issue. At first I thought I had received a couple of lemons from a bad batch, but I now have a half dozen of these and they all discharge dramatically when not in use which really dilutes the value of being able to toss a couple spares in your bag with the confidence that they will work in a pinch at a later date. On the plus side, a freshly-charged battery performs well and usually lasts all day the field, but I have been forced into needing to charge all my batteries the night before I shoot and it's an issue that just should not exist in 2018. Many times I've reached for a spare and popped it in the camera only to find it fully discharged. I would love to see this fixed in future models. Consumer-grade 18650 rechargeable lithium batteries last at least 10 times as long in storage.

Good battery better price

Well it's nice to see the price of this battery come down. Although it does have a longer life than the D700 batteries. Worth the investment.

Power 'Hungry' D500

Since the D500 is a power 'Hungry' camera I am pleased that the EL-18 has the power to get me through a long days shoot with power to spare.

Don't cheap out!

I bought this battery to replace the Green Extreme EN-EL18 Battery Pack, which never held a charge well and had calibration issues nearly from the beginning. My advice is to pony up for the Nikon (OEM) battery and save yourself the headache or potential disaster of not having power when you need it! That being said, don't count on getting the advertised number of shots per charg (why I gave it 4 stars); keep an eye on your energy levels.

Best Battery available

Don't buy off brand batteries for your Nikon. I did that once and wasted my money because the off-brand was unreliable and never held a charge. The nikon battery might cost more but it does what it's supposed to do!

Right battery - fiar price

I decided a long time ago NOT to put off-brand batteries in $2-4,000 camera bodies. This is like putting discount store oil in your BMW. So I was pleased to get a genuine Nikon battery at a very good price. My only issue now is, I would like to buy replacements for the white plastic caps I have lost for previous EN-EL18s, and apparent NOBODY sells them! The label on the protective cap says they are important to prevent electrical shorts -- but apparently not important enough to offer as replacements.

The Difference Shows

This was bought as a second battery for my D4. I'm replacing an off-brand battery I bought earlier. The Nikon OEM costs twice as much, but the difference in quality is apparent. My Nikon batteries hold a charge longer, significantly longer, and on an all-day shoot that difference matters.
