Questions & Answers

David G : Would this lens do to shoot a broadcast documentary?JANET R : Absolutely. The majority of my work is PBS documentary style productions and as you know, it's a lot of run and gun. You don't have a lot of time to follow the action and make sure you're in focus etc. This makes the works much easier so you can concentrate on the action, not the lens. You can go wide and tight and the footage is sharp and crisp with great contrast. I have a Panasonic GH2 so for me, this is a 24-70 and I love it. You will not have buying remorse with this one...SCOTT B : Still photos: Excellent, sharp and fast with a great focal range for documentary work. Video: Good to v. Good-super smooth controls, stabilization, somewhat fast(may need to use additional lighting in certain conditions, great focal length and very sharp.ADRIAN P : I find this lens to work better than a Canon 24-70 "L" Series. Its designed for video, so there is little in no movement in the frame when you switch focus. That comes in handy when pulling manual focus, or auto focus. It's sharp. If you're shooting professional video, this is certainly a great lens. Obviously if you have the budget, Cine lenses would be best, but if not. I'd recommend it.DEANE D : I love this lens, but do not know much about your needs for broadcast documentary quality. A reviewer says this: "Preview based on a pre-production Lumix G X-Vario 12-35mm F2.8 (H-HS12035) "It's almost four years since Panasonic introduced the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in the shape of the Lumix DMC-G1, a most unrevolutionary-looking product that ushered in a brave new era of camera system design. In the intervening years we've seen a slew of cameras of this type as all of the major manufacturers (with the curious exception of Canon) have joined the fray. We've also seen a welcome resurgence of compact fast primes along with the development of clever collapsing zooms, as manufacturers have sought to capitalise on the inherent size advantage over SLR designs. But one type of lens highly valued by more-serious photographers has been conspicuous by its absence - the high quality, large aperture zoom. Panasonic has now addressed this with a lens it's labelling H-HS12035 - an optically-stabilized 12-35mm F2.8 in its premium 'X' range. "Unlike Panasonic's previous X lenses, the 12-35mm is not a powerzoom, instead featuring a conventional rotary zoom ring as favoured by stills photographers... But perhaps most striking is its compact size. (some material deleted because of space restrictions in this answer) "Naturally the lens is designed with movie shooting in mind, with a linear stepper motor for near-silent autofocus, and Panasonic's video-optimised 'Power OIS' stabilization system. The optical system features elements crafted from Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion (UED) and Ultra High Refractive (UHR) glass, and uses Panasonic's Nano Surface Coating to minimize internal reflections and flare. The diaphragm uses 7 rounded blades to give a circular aperture for attractive rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds. On paper this all adds up to a tempting specification. "DAVID C : This shoots video remarkably well, especially in low light on my OM-D.LOUIS P : I have had limited experience with this lens so far. One thing I can say is that it is sharp. The f/2.8 aperture gives a bright view and is helpful in focusing. I have nearly zero experience with video. You should try the zoom ring to see if it will give you smooth zooms without jerkiness. I'm using the lens on an Olympus OM-D E-M5. For that camera the Olympus 12-50mm is recommended for video since it has both manual and electronic zoom, which is supposed to give smoother movement. Again, I have limited video experience, but the Panasonic lens is sharp and gives good contrast in my opinion.HOMER S : Assuming you are using a M43 camera, I don't see why not. It has a length that would be good for most situations where a long zoom is not required, is very sharp and reasonably fast. It is also features silent focusing; very useful for videos.
Mike K : I would like to find out how smooth the zooming action is on this lens. I have handled three lenses from Panasonic the 14-45mm kit lens, the 100-300mm and the 25mm/f1.4. Both zoom lenses do not zoom smoothly when turned slowly. Like plastic on plastic catching or lube missing. While the 25mm/f1.4 is no zoom, the focus ring turns like butter and has a superb feel to it. I would hope with the more expensive 12-35/f2.8 lens, they would have engineered it to zoom in a less jerking way, have they?MIKE M : I used the 12-35 mm f2.8 zoom during video and it was very smooth to work. Very impressed with the quality.JAY G : I like it! I have three Panasonic lenses: 12- 35, 35 - 100, and 100 - 300. They all meet my needs.SIDNEY D : Hi Mike, I use this lens on my Olympus OMD-E5 and really like it. There is a very smooth extension and retraction, never had a problem with it and love the glass. I would be sorely tempted to ask for a replacement on the other lenses that don't have a smooth transition, sounds like a glitch in their production. Hope this helps!GERALD S : I would have to say it is a little stiff compared to other zoom lenses I have used. Not bad but not butter smooth. You will likely be displeased with the zooming if you do a lot of it. A lever ring might help as an accessory....ERIC W : If you're thinking of slowly pushing in or out while recording, it would be very hard to make that work. I've tried and can't accomplish it with my bare hands. Maybe if you rigged up some sort of follow focus type thing but on the zoom you might be able to do it but with just your hands, I would rule it out. It's a shame but it's not a technique that I use often anyway. I guess it limits its use in live event sort of situations where you might want that slow zoom without stopping the recording but it is what it is. ERIC W : Yeah the zoom isn't so smooth. If you're thinking of pushSTREETLIGHT C : Hi Mike, the 12-35 is definitely a step up from the two zooms you mentioned, and even the 14-140 which is IMHO better than those two as well. And of course the fact there is no ramping is a huge plus. That being said, this is not a parafocal cinema style zoom lens. Although I use it primarily as a variable prime, there are occasions when I have used it as a zoom, although I always attempt to disguise zooms (even when working with Angenieuxs or Cookes on real cinema cameras with zoom motors)-- usually by combinging them with camera moves, the simple pan being easiest and most effective. I think the 12-35 is probably as good as you're going to get in a lens of that price, and that the results, if properly executed, are quite satisfactory. I've actually considered trying to rig up a zoom motor on the thing, but that's overkill for the way I shoot and what I shoot on a GH3. I do have a funky zoom stick I attach on occasion, and it can help in making subtile moves, but of course I always prefer the slowest and hopefully imperceptible moves, which are close to impossible to execute by hand.Mike K : Thank you all! It's good to know that this lens operates smoothly.ALBERTO J : I am an amateur enthusiast who uses camera equipment for family, vacations and very few planned projects. I own the 14-45, 45-200, 100-300 and the 25/f1.4 (plus many other lenses along with GH3, GH2, and GH1) you mention in your question. I am familiar with your comment about non-smooth zooming on these old lenses. My copy, and judging from others comments, most everyone's copy of the two lenses 12-35 and the 35-100 are smooth zooming, sharp and worth having. I am at the tail end of a 2000+ vacation and I used the 12-35 75%, 35-100 20%, and my Rokinon 7.5 fisheye 3%, the 100-300 1%; never used the 14-45, nor the 45-200, nor any of the other many lenses I have. I am going to have a "garage sale" of many of my lens collection. It's not possible to leave a link here, visit personal-view dot com and find the 12-35 topic for discussions about this lens from professional videographers.PHOTOARTICULATI R : I have found that lens to be VERY smooth and very sharp. I own Nikons (D200, & D300) and this lens is surprisingly better than my Nikkor lenses. I LOVE this lens and find no fault with it. GREGORY N : Mile, I use the panasonic GH3 for primarily video. They got this one right. It's smooth as glass. I own a three of their new lenses they are well made.
Shopper : Does this lens mount on a Panasonic GX1?GERALD S : Yes it will mount on any G series interchangeable lens camera. That should include the GX1. It is a fine lens to add to any G series micro four thirds camera.ERIC W : The lens has a micro 4/3 mount so should work with any micro 4/3 camera including the GX1.JESSE M : yesJOEL L : Yes, it will mount on any micro 4/3's camera. The Panasonic GX1 is m4/3's.JEFFERY N : Yes it does.WILLIAM V. D : A footnote. The reason the 12-35 is so important for video is the fact that it has a fixed 2.8 minimum f stop at all focal lengths. As a result a videographer can zoom in the middle Of a scene without the light going goofy on you You pay a premium for this functionality. If used sole for still photography the lense must be justified by image output, which typically won't depend on a constant f stop from 12mm thru 35mm. Read the dpreview of the lense itself vs other mFT lenses, particularly those from Olympus and voightlanderWILLIAM V. D : Yes. According to dpreview dot com, a very credible photo site, the GX1 is clearly an interchangeable lens camera and part of the Panasonic micro four thirds camera system. I use it on the GH3 primarily for video at the moment. Cannot claim same expertise as dpreview but am stunned at speed and silence of auto-focus. It also has a better build than the earlier lenses in the series: metal v plastic. Go for it!GALEN E : While I have both a GH2 and GH3 and don't own a GX1 - I do know for a fact that this excellent lens will work on a GX1, It is a substantial improvement over the kit lens. You get what you pay for.G D : It will mount on any micro four thirds cameraGREGORY P : I don't know. I mounted it on a gh3.

Excellent glass

This was my micro 4/3 lens. I am a full frame shooter and was skeptical about getting good quality image from such small sensor and small lens. But I have to say I'm am so impressed with this glass. The images are stunning and the stabilization works fantastic with my Gh5. The footage handheld is very impressive. I chose this over the newer version since there wasn't much difference and it was a few hundred dollars less. I would recommend this lens.

Excellent, Sharp Lens

I use this lens on my GH4 mainly for recording video. The sharpness and clarity at f 2.8 is great. I'm able to shoot indoors without a ton of extra light with great results. It's a good zoom range for interviews and B-roll.

Excellent Lens

Small and light for a f2.8 lens. Sharp and refers nicely. I've also owned the 12-40, and I prefer this the 12-35. I think the rendering is nicer and the smaller size is more in line with my wanting to use m43 mount in the first place.

Great lens

What a perfect zoom for the GX85! I find it balances well and just takes very lovely looking pictures. I am not just talking about the sharpness which is great across all focal lengths but the way the pcitures are rendered. In spite of many people comparing 12-32 kit lens favorably with this lens, I feel that there is just no comparison, both in the quality of the lens as well as the "character" of the pictures taken.

excellent upgrade to kit lens

I like the Panasonic 12-35 lens a lot. It is much sharper than the 14-42 kit lens, at the center and at the edges, and is an excellent upgrade for your standard lens. Plus the extra 2mm at the wide end is very useful (24mm equivalent is significantly wider than 28). I find its size and weight to be very acceptable for a lens with its specs (very high-quality optics and 2.8 constant aperture). Its build quality is also excellent. It is well worth its price.

High Quality Lens

This is my first lens to go with my first mft's camera (GH4). I was worried that the fitting was very tight with the lens mount, but was assured by support that it is supposed to fit snug. Performance wise, it handles chromatic aberrations well wide open. It has fast focusing, smooth focus ring, and compact in size. I use this as an all around lens for video and occasional photos. I could have opted to go with prime lenses first, but this is a highly regarded lens and I agree. It is not uber great, but it is a good overall and high quality choice with decent OIS.

Great Pictures, even at low light

I bought a Lumix DMC-GH3 with a kit lens. The kit lens works great outside (in daylight), but the zoom was so limited, so I bought this LUMIX® G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. Lens. I've used it for both pictures and video and have been very pleased by the quality compared to the kit lens. This past weekend I was asked to shoot some pictures for a church (in low light - no flash). I shot closeups of the band playing in practice, then during the meeting from a longer distance. The G X series works much better than the less expensive lens. The darker portions of the picture were still clear, not distorted due to low light (like my other lens). It's not a cheap lens, but I'd say it's worth the investment. I will say, it has a tendency to overexpose when using automatic settings, but the color and clarity are awesome.

I have used this lens for 8 months now and it has hardly comes off of my camera, a GX7. The lens covers the range that is most useful to me and its fast F2.8 aperature and sharp results satisfy most of my shooting needs.

Must-have

This is the perfect companion to a GH4. In the size of an APS-C SLR kit zoom, you get a very refined 2.8 zoom with real quality feel. It may not be the ideal match to a really compact body or if you really want to travel light (try 12-32 for that), but for most GH-series users, this is the standard zoom to have at a good price for what you get. f/2.8 may not give you massive dof control on m43, but it is more useful for everyday shooting that it is on a larger format DSLR and this lens is sharp wide open across the range and frame and with stabilization to really help the smaller format sensors in low-light. I wish it would to a clickless constant-aperture zoom-in in video mode and that Panasonic would offer a 2k f/2 OIS lens that one could dream about, but for most shooters, this is really the standard zoom to get.

Overall good and versatile lens. One great disadvantage is that this lens is not parfocal, i.e. focus point is shifting when zooming. Also missing: extension tubes

Best travel lens for m43 systems

I bought this lens for my long Europe vacation. Took more than 5000 pictures using G6 body. Very versatile. It easily withstood wind, sand and occasional splashes. I am still working through the shots but already did not regret a single minute that I owned the lens. I am an amateur, but I noticed very little distortion. 12 mm comes very handy inside buildings, compared to 14 mm on most kit lenses. 35 mm/F2.8 actually produces nice bokeh. Downsides: (minor)I could not operate manual focus ring with hood parked on the lens. I had to either remove the hood or attach it in working position thus making the camera bulkier. And the larger one is that the lens does not have Lightroom profile.

Excellent compact lens

Almost as good as primes with a very flexible zoom range from wide open to portrait. I wish the zoom action was similar to the companion 35-100 zoom which does not elongate while the 12-35 does.

Fast, Sharp

I purchased this lens to compliment my kit adding a fast, short zoom capability. Despite being expensive, the lens does not disappoint. The f2.8 aperture, and sharpness at that opening, nearly eliminate the need for a flash indoors; and what flash is used, can be much softer. With its 12mm wide angle capability and the 16:9 format option in the Panasonic cameras, this is also an awesome wide angle lens for landscape shots - wide and sharp to the edge with little barrel distortion. The auto focus is nearly instantaneous and seems very accurate.

Great optics, sticky zoom

The optics for this lens are terrific. Even wide open it's a winner. However, I was unable to get a smooth zoom, even when using Zoom lever DMW-ZL1. It's now in for adjustment, and hopefully its zoom action will equal its optics when returned.

Great zoom lens

For the micro 4/3s system this is a exceptional lens. Very nice for low light shots. Very nice image quality across the board. Sharp , contrasty, and very nice color. The only drawback the DOF is more comperable to 5.6 on a 35mm sensor. This lens does produce very nice bokeh. I just wish they would have made it a f/2.0. But then it would have cost even more. If you want a a really nice street Xoom, and don't mind the price, this is a winner.

A fine product at a premium price

Autofocus is speedy, would satisfy the most discerning user. As a reviewer put it, this lens was built to meet a specification not a price. It has a good range of focal length for daily use. It is a handsomely fitted lens which gives crisp images and is well suited for still and video. Zoom action is a little bit stiff and may need an accesssory lever to achieve zoom control. Not a gripe, just an observation. I would like to know how weather sealed this lens is,and Pana does not say except one gasket.. I am a cheapskate at heart and yet I feel I got my money's worth. Hope the price drops a little, but so do all of us with limited hobby funds. Worth the cash if you need the F 2.8 constant. Or like the value of same.

This lens is fast and Sharp

Panasonic zoom lens LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-HS12035) (35mm camera equivalent: 24-70mm) for the LUMIX G Micro System.

Crystallizing Panasonic's optical technologies, the "x" lens features superb image rendering for lifelike textures, crisp edge-to-edge contrast, a unique Nano Surface Coating for minimal ghost and flare and natural atmospheres with remarkable transparency.

The LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. lens offers a versatile zoom range of 12-35mm (35mm camera equivalent: 24-70mm) featuring F2.8brightness at entire zoom range. It is suitable for capturing a wide range of scenes from dynamic landscape to portrait taking advantage of beautiful defocus or fast shutter speed.

Panasonic's Nano Surface Coating technology is adopted to minimize the reflection at entire visual light range (380nm-780nm) by applying the extra-low refractive index coating with nano-sized structure on the surface of the lens. It results in the super clear picture with dramatic reduction of ghost and flare.

The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) which is newly integrated in the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. effectively compensates for not only small, fast movement but also large, slow one making it easy to shoot super clear shots even in low-lit situations such as in night time or indoors.

Comprising of 14 lenses in 9 groups, the UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lens minimize chromatic aberration while the UHR (Ultra High Refractive) lens realizes high descriptive performance from corner to corner. It features high contrast and resolution from the center to the corner at entire zoom range, making it possible to capture the details of a scenery and a portrait with rich perspective. The inclusion of 4 aspherical lenses that helps achieving the downsizing of lens unit to boast outstanding compactness with approx. 73.8 mm in length and approx. 305 g in weight for high mobility.

It incorporates superior inner focus system, which enables excellent resolution and contrast from full life-size magnification to infinity. The inclusion of stepping motor makes the focusing action smooth and silent for use in both photo and video recording. When mounted on the cameras of LUMIX G Micro System, users can take advantage of the high-speed, high-precision Contrast AF system.

Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth defocus effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. Highly reliable metal mount endures long time use.

Designed to stand against splash/dust with a rubber ring on the lens mount, the sophisticated metallic-finished look of the LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm / F2.8 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. suits the profile of stylish camera body of LUMIX Compatability:
