Questions & Answers

Shopper : Will this lens work with my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ50? I am able to attach a wide angle and telephoto lens to the body by screwing it on.DEREK N : no.. It cannot use with DMC FZ50. This lens can only be used with "Interchangeable" micro 4/3 camera. Such as G2, G3, GF1, GF2, GF3, GF5, GX1, GH1, GH2, and GH3. Or other Olympus micro 4/3. The first thing you need to find out yourself is to visit panasonic(dot)net . Go to Consumer -> Digital Camera -> Mirrorless Camera If your camera is Panasonic, and it is not the list there. Most likely, you can't use it.DAVID S : I don't have the camera you mention but I serious doubt it. The Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lenses have a bayonet mount rather than a screw-type one.WALTER G : No it will not work with that camera. It works with the micro four thirds interchangeable lens compact cameras; the panasonic G, GF, and GH series cameras.DALE G : the Lumix 20mm lens is a great lens! Your Lumix FMCFZ50 camera is not set up to use interchangeable lenses like the 20mm lens - It is a powerful Point & Shoot. Thus, you cannot use the 20 mm lens on it. If you are looking to upgrade to interchangable lenses, you will need to upgrade your camera to a GH series. Hope this helps!JOHN J : I don't know; I use the lens on an OlympusTIMOTHY M : No this lens requires a micro 4/3 mount on the cameraGEORGE F : I do not think so. You need a micro 4/3rds mount and the accompanying electronics (contacts for auto focus, etc.) which are not part of the FZ50. The FZ50 is a great camera, but if you want to use this lens, you'll need to step up to a Micro 4/3rds body. I use this lens on a G1 and it's superb. You can find those bodies used at reasonable prices from time to time. There are other choices as well (many fine Olympus bodies, for example).ROZANNE E : Thank you. So the lens attachment must be different than a screw on. How does it attach? Also, do you think that this is a good all around lens? I am going to buy a GH3 as soon as I can find one.NICK C : NoANTHONY R : I am sorry but this will not fit your camera. This lens fits cameras with interchangeable lenses in the Micro 4/3rds system only.
WOONG C : Do you recommend this lenz for DMC-L1? Are they compatible?NICOLA D : I have not been able to locate any reference online to using M4/3 lenses on 4/3 camera bodies. The reverse situation requires an adapter, so I expect that there are significant enough differences that would make it problematic to mount the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 M4/3 on on the DMC-L1. That doesn't leave many choices in this category: Olympic's 25mm Zuiko pancake, which is in the same price category as the 20mm, or the Panasonic Leica D Summilux, which is $1,200.WALTER G : That lens is a great lens. I use it on my Olympus PL1 for night and low light pictures. However, I dont think it is compatible with the DMC-L1. That camera is a four thirds system camera and the 20mm f1.7 lens is a micro four thirds system lens.JAMES E : It is an excellent lens, very well built and very sharp with moderately high contrast. I used it extensively on my GF1 for a few years and when I replaced that camera with an Olympus OM-D (E-M5) body, I kept all my Panasonic lenses and all including the 20mm f 1.7 perform very wellc on the new camera.DARNELL P : Hello Jun C, The 20mm is a micro 4/3 lens mount, the DMC-L1 is a 4/3 lens lens mount and can not be used. DarnellDAVID A : I beleive the DMC L1 has a Four/Thirds lens mount. The lens you're asking about has a Micro Four/Thirds lens mount, which is much smaller. The lens itself is a very good prime, especially for low light photography. Just something to consider if you decide to move to the micro four/thirds format. One of the benefits of the micro four/thirds lensmount is that you buy adapters to mount any lens you currently own to the camera. You may not get full autofocus functionality, but you wouldn't have to replace any particular lens you're fond of. Caution: most of the better micro/four thirds lenses are pricey.Richard B : No - the L1 is a 4/3 camera, and this lens is made for micro 4/3, which has a much shorter distance between the mount and the sensor.MICHAEL J : This is a micro 4/3 lens and can't be used on the DMC-L1 which uses 4/3 lenses.
Shopper : Do I need an adapter to use a Panasonic MTF lens on an Oly e-pl3?DEBRA B : Nope! I used this lens on my E-PL1 and no adapter was needed. All micro 4/3 lenses are interchangeable.James F : There is no adapter required. I have been using it on the Olympus Pl1 since September and it is the perfect compact lens for that camera. It makes it into a pocket camera.NICOLA D : No. This is from Oympus's website description for the E-PL3: "Like all PEN-series cameras, the Olympus E-PL3 features a Micro Four Thirds lens mount capable of accepting quite a selection of dedicated lenses from Olympus, Panasonic, and Voigtländer. Courtesy of several adapters, it can also accept older glass including OM-series lenses, Leica's M and R-mount lenses, and lenses made for Olympus and Panasonic's full-sized Four Thirds cameras."Joseph R : No adapter is needed. Both your e-pl3 and the Panasonic lens are Micro Four Thirds. You only need an adapter on the e-pl3 for lenses which are not Micro Four Thirds.BARTON K : I do not believe that an adapter is required. It is a 4/3rds mount.STEPHEN P : No. The Panasonic Lumix G and Olympus PEN cameras use the same mounting system.DAVID R : You don't need an adapter. I use the lens directly on the Olympus PL1, which has the same mount.Ian B : No you won't need an adapter, the Olympus and Panasonic M43 cameras are interchangeable. See 43rumors dot com for a review of someone who used an PL2 with a 20mm Panasonic.ARTHUR H : Yes, the 4/3 system allows different manufacturers to exchange lenses without an adapter. You do need adapter for Nikon SLR lenses.EDWIN L : No, you do not need an adapter to use that wonderful lens on the Oly e-pl3.

Great lens

Great lens. The extras make it really worthwhile. Very sharp. AF is a little slow/loud, don't let that stop you.

Fast, compact prime lens but not good for continuous auto-focus.

Everything good except the slow and noisy focus motors. Fine for still photos and any static video scene where you can lock off on a tripod with a fixed focal distance.

Nice Lens to include with your arsenal

Bought this lens for its weight, macro capability, large aperture size and storage for hiking. In a pinch I can stick it in my pocket so I can shoot with other lenes. As a test to the max, I shot some astro pics with it of the Milky Way and I was impressed as it was my first attempt with this type of photography. The camera that I use is a G85. BTW the kit of accessories it comes with is awesome since I have used most of them.

As expected.

Added items increase the value of this lens. Nothing special, just a nice all around lens. Unfortunately some of the items were missing and never received but that does not take away from the quality of the Panasonic lens

Pretty good all around lens for every day shooting.

This lens is good for low light photography ,and for landscape photography. It's a bit slow sometimes to focus. All that being said, it's a good all around lens.

Works with GH5s and Ronin S

I needed a Lumix lens to take advantage of the focus control on the Ronin S. This works great and it's light for gimbal work. Performs well for an inexpensive lens.

Great focal, pancake size

So small, so sharp, and a very useful focal length. Perfect for people: you don't need too much space, and the perspective is still ok for portraits. Very sharp in the middle already at full aperture, but to reduce vignetting and sharpen the corner, close to f/2.8. Lightly built, but no complain for the price.

Excellent Lens

Excellent lens exhibiting wonderful image quality. I especially like the very low profile of this lens. Undoubtedly this is the lens that will remain on my Panasonic G85 most of the time. You cannot go wrong having this lens in your lens repertoire.

Great lens

I bought this lens to use with my Panasonic GM-1 after having some issues with the kit lens in cold weather. I went with a prime since I wanted a low f stop for nigh time photography. I have not had it out at night yet but have been impressed by how much clearer than my other lenses, the kit 12-32 and another panasonic 35-100, this one is. Those ones seemed good until I compared them to this one. I am looking forward to getting this one out at night and seeing how it does in that setting as well.

Excellent compact lens

Like this lens a lot - the focal length (slightly on the wide side of "normal") is great for so many shooting situations. Bought it primarily because I wanted a fast, compact lens to use when I want to travel light and this lens fits the bill nicely. With this lens in place my G7 can even slip comfortably in a jacket pocket. My only issue with the lens is that it focuses a bit on the slow side - not really an issue for the shooting I do - as well as the fact that I often focus manually anyway.

Cheap Shallow Prime for M3/4

This lens is pretty great overall. It's a great portrait lens with a solid minimum focus distance and nice depth of field. It's main drawback is it's focus speed and accuracy. I use this with a GH5 and it does seem to wander around sometimes when autofocusing in reasonable lighting. With that said I would still recommend it. Just be prepared to flip into manual focus once in a while.

A great "walk around" lens.

I have both the Olly 17/1.8 and Panny 25/1.4, but wanted the compactness and range of this lens as my default on an Olympus Pen F. I don't see any difference in quality with these lenses. They're all sharp and contrasty, and focus quickly. The 40mm equivalent is really close to a true "normal" focal length, and while I've only had the lens a few weeks, it's become my go to for street and general purpose. The portrait is about a 50% crop. If you're getting only one prime lens, this would be a good choice.

One of the must-have Micro 4/3 lenses

It's small, relatively light, very sharp, with rich color and contrast. The focal length is also a great match for me. Its main limitation is a slow focusing mechanism; not a problem for me, since I mostly shoot landscapes/architecture/museums and anything with faster action I'll want a longer focal length for anyway.

A must own

By AlexM

The 20mm Panasonic Lumix f/1.7 is one of the few must owns for the micro 4/3 system. I use it on my Olympus EP-2 with great results. It is sharp, fast, focuses accurately, is built well, and looks great mounted on the camera. The bokeh is great. This is a gem of a lens, and a steal for the price. Great optics!

Fantastic lens: colors are wonderful

By Christian H.

Excellent lens. To me, better than the Canon 28mm 1.8 that I used to mount on my Rebel Xti to get a somewhat fast 50mm lens. With the GF1, I get 40mm, but it works great with interior (low light) shots. The colors are simply beautiful. Consistent output.

The LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH, a compact and lightweight "pancake" lens with outstanding brightness

The LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH lens is dramatically compact and lightweight, featuring an outstanding F1.7 brightness which allows consumers to create stunning photos with beautiful, soft focus. Comprised of seven lenses arranged in five groups, the LUMIX G 20mm lens actually uses two aspherical lenses to effectively minimize distortion and achieve super high resolution.

The versatile 20mm focal length (equivalent to 40mm on a 35mm film camera) is suitable for allapplications - from scenery shots to dimly-lit indoor environments. When mounted on LUMIX G Micro System Cameras, the LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH lens allows for use of the advanced contrast Auto Focus (AF) system, which includes Panasonic's Face Recognition functions. Both lenses are comprised of seven blades, which produce an attractive and smooth background blur effect when shooting at larger aperture settings. These lenses also feature a highly-reliable metal mount, and use multi-coated lens elements to minimize glare andfurther enhance optical performance.
