Questions & Answers

Shopper : I read some adjustment is needed for AF with the E620. Since I was thinking of buying this lens for my E620, can anyone tell me what sort of "adjustments" are needed ? Thank you.GREGORY V : When I bought my lens, I read several reported instances of front focus. I have both an E620 and an E5 and this proved not to be a problem with either camera and my lens. If this were a problem, I felt confident that I could bias the AF near or far using the built-in lens calibration page in the setup menu. This involves taking a series of shots at long repeating target (I like to use a brick wall) and adjusting the lens calibration value in the camera so that the AF is focusing where you intend it to focus. Once you store this offset value in the camera, the camera is able to use this automatically each time the lens is installed as it also knows the S/N of the lens and stores this with the calibration value. One thing to keep in mind regarding AF on a F1.4-capable lens is the extremely narrow DOF. At F1.4, you may only have ~1/2" in tack-sharp focus to work with. I love the photos that this lens produces but it took a bit of practice to lessen the photo rejects. With this in mind, in low light situations, I usually choose manual focus. Good Luck! GregHANNAN L : I noticed that if I "tinker' with the Aperture dial on the lens it "disables" the aperture settings on the camera. So I just leave the aperture ring on the lens in it's 1.4 setting. That is the only issue I have encountered. Hope this helps.MARK G : AF Focus Adjust. Some of the Leica lenses back focus slightly when used with an Olympus camera. I have this lens on the E-5 and after testing with a focus test card I compensated -2 steps for perfect focus. From what I've read this is a pretty typical adjustment - though some lenses of this model do not require any adjustment while on some it's significantly more. I'm very happy with the pictures I get from the lens and I wish my older E-510 also had focus adjust.
Shopper : What is the difference apart from price with the cheaper DG summilux lense?WILLIAM M : The mount is different. The more expensive lens is for 4/3 DSLRs from Olympus and Panasonic. The newer DG is for the new mirror-less bodies, so it is smaller in every dimension. Great on Olympus Pen/OMD and Panasonic G, GF, GX, and GH series cameras. STEPHEN N : This is a fantastic lens and is everything the 4/3 version is and more in the Micro 4/3 version. I would recommend reading the review at lenstip which highlights the differences.CARL R : It's my understanding that the Leica DG Summilux is for Micro four-thirds cameras, while the Leica D Summilux is for Four-thirds cameras, and could be used on a Micro four-thirds camera only with a four-thirds to Micro four-thirds adapter. This would be an added expense which would probably do nothing to improve the quality of the photographic images.THIAGO S : Here's the answer: The D lens is for Four Thirds SLR cameras, such as Olympus E-5. The DG lens is for MICRO Four Thirds MIRRORLESS cameras, such as Panasonic GF, GH, G series and Olympus' Pen series.CARL G : If I understand your question correctly, the Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Leica D is a full Four Thirds lens. Most of the cameras that use this mount are discontinued, but their are many available used, including the Leica Digilux 3 and the Pana DMC-L10. The Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Leica DG is a Micro Four Thirds lens. The micro four thirds is now the current mount for all Pana and Oly cameras. You can use a full four thirds lens on a micro four thirds camera but you will have to buy an adapter. The full four thirds lens is better quality in my opinion, but it is unwieldy, large, and heavy when used on a micro four thirds camera with the adapter. Unless you have an old full thirds camera, I would not buy the D lens even though it's probably better technically. Hope I answered your questionSCOTT A : The D lens has a Four Thirds mount, while the DG has a Micro Four Thirds mount. You can use the D lens with an adapter on a Micro Four Thirds camera body, however the auto focus speed may be slower than with the DG lens on a mFT body. Best of luck on your lens search....BRIAN H : The most important difference is four thirds lenses cannot be used on micro four thirds cameras without an expensive adapter. Four thirds lenses were designed for earlier DSLR cameras from Panasonic and Olympus. Four thirds lenses are bigger, heavier, and slower focusing than micro four thirds lenses of the same brand. I strongly recommend you not buy any four thirds lenses, unless you own one of those earlier DSLR cameras. Buy only micro four thirds lenses for micro four thirds cameras, such as the Panasonic G1/2/3, GH1/2, GF1/2/3/5, and similar Olympus PEN models.ALEXANDER S : 25mm f/1.4 Leica DG Summilux Aspherical Micro 4/3 Lens is MICRO FOUR THIRDS lens for cameras like GH2, while Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Leica D Summilux Aspherical Lens for Four Thirds lens is FOUR THIRDS lens for cameras like Olympus E-5.TOM C : If I'm not mistaken the DG is for MICRO four thirds and the D is for FOUR/THIRDS, not micro 4/3's. You should definitely check on that to be sure.CRAIG L : The DG lens is a m4/3 mount and this lens is 4/3 mount. I hear the optics are similar otherwise. But to use the 4/3 D lens on a Micro Four Thirds camera, you'll need an adapter.
Kuo-Chung H : Does it work with panasonic GX1? And what is the different between the lens (L-X025) and H-X025? They are similar but very different in price.GREGORY V : Hi, According to this web site: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/gx1.html the Panasonic L-X025 is compatible with the GX1. This is a four-thirds prime lens that I have and love. The H-X025 is a micro-four-thirds lens. I have an Olympus E5 so am not sure what adapter is available for your GX1 if you want to use a micro four-thirds lens with it. I hope that this helps.SETH C : The 25mm Summilux D lens is an older lens that has been discontinued by the manufacturer. It was developed for the Four Thirds system of DSLR cameras. It will work on a micro four thirds camera like the GX1 only if the separate Four Thirds adapter is purchased and used with the lens. The newer 25mm Summilux DG lens is a micro four thirds lens that will work with all micro four thirds cameras like the GX1 without the need for an adapter. There is no real reason for a micro four thirds camera owner to get the older 25mm D. That lens is really just for Four Thirds camera owners. I have the D model lens and use it with my Olympus E-5. It is worth pointing out that both 25mm Panasonic lenses, the D and the DG models, are very high quality lenses that give superb results.GEORGE B : I have a G1, the Summilux lens mounted on a micro four thirds adaptor works fine and troublr free. The price difference, may be due to the different mounts on each type, (four thirds and micro four thirds).CHRISTOPHER R : One's for standard 4/3s the other (cheaper) is for micro 4/3s. They should both work but the standard 4/3 version will need an adaptor. I have the standard 4/3 version, it's awesome.

Sharp as a tack wide open

This lens is for sure going to change the quality of our production. It is super sharp wide open and has the best "creamy" bokeh out of all my lens. If you want to "up" your production game, I will highly recommend this precious diamond!!

Great Lens for Video

I bought this lens for shooting videos and I'm absolutely in love with the quality of this little guy. The build quality is heavy and firm and gives me confidence in the durability of the lens. The only thing I have had issues with is the lens cap popping off and cracking on the ground... I'm in the middle of trying to get a replacement lens cap. But the glass and focus reel are absolutely top grade. Just be careful with the cap, and you'll stay in love with this camera!

Sharp and Fast, but...

This lens is quite good. Rather sharp, focuses well. Build nicely. I like the feel of the focus ring more than my Pany 12-35. But I would say, it isn't quite as fantastic as some have made it sound. It's a solid lens with good image quality, but it doesn't blow my mind. The focus is quick, but not as quick as I thought it would be based on other reviews.

fastest lens I own.

A week after the purchase of the 25mm f/1.4 Panasonic/Leica lens I took a trip to Chicago and this was the only lens that I took. Now I would never tell someone who hadn't used a lens before to rely on a brand new item of equipment, but that is just what I did. It was my first trip to Chicago so it was important for this to work and boy did it. We rode around on a double decker touring bus, and I shot from the upper deck. The shots came out great and I was very happy with the purchase. When we went to an art museum it did well in the dim lighting. One photo I took of a man looking at one of the paintings turned out to be one of the best photos I have ever taken and I have been shooting since 1959. I would have missed the shot if this lens hadn't been able to lock on focus the moment I pressed the shutter. The subject was there and then the blink of an eye it was gone. I saw the photo, I took the photo and then the subject moved on. Any other lens and I might not have gotten the image. This lens is fast focusing and tack sharp.

Great Lens for Micro Four Third System

I bought this lens to use with my Lumix GF7. This does produce very nice quality picture. I love the effect of blur background with focus on the object and this lens help me does all that. At 25mm it is great to take portrait as well. I would totally recommend this product.

Best prime for micro 4/3

I've tried quite a few of the micro 4/3 lenses from all the major manufacturers and this one delivers the pro-level quality that I require. In addition to its obvious wide aperture, it's corner-to-corner sharpness is terrific. And it's rendering of images fits into the "Leica look"camp very well which may not fit everyone's tastes, but certainly fits mine. Highly recommended!

Amazing lens

Very sharp and bright lens, with excellent bokeh, even compared to my Lumix G 20 mm f/1.7 pancake lens.

Very sharp, beautiful rendering.

One of my favorite lenses for the micro four thirds system. Though bigger, a bit heavier, and more costly than competing f/1.8 and f/1.7 primes, it earns its nearly inscrutable reputation. I regularly use it from f/1.4 through f/11 and find it to be very sharp at all apertures, with center sharpness peaking around f/2.8 and edge sharpness peaking between f/2.8-f/5.6 depending on the scene. Good for a wide variety of subjects, whether the light is good or poor.

Worth every penny...

Just diving into the MFT systems, and this was the lens to get...so far it has met the expectations, and cannot be happier about choosing this baby to start with the right foot! Size and weight are something to consider, but it's well worth it...Panasonic and Leica nailed it! The f1.4 is just amazing, and the construction of the lens is top class!!!

A good walking-around lens

This is an excellent lens for general street images. It focuses quickly and has a good grip for manual focusing as well. It moves from afternoon to night shooting thanks to the wide aperture. I probably will keep this on the Pen or G2 most of the time.

Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 Leica DG Summilux A

I use it as my normal lens. It is bright and clear. Low light photography is easy, Colors are natural and the subjects turn out crisp and sharp. GREAT LENS AND A BARGAIN AT THE PRICE. I sold my Nikon D800 and never looked back. It is light and enjoyable to use.........

Bokehlicious

I have had it less than a month but can already tell I'll be using it more than any other lens I own. Great in lower light situations. Build & optics are great AF is fast and the focus ring is much smoother than the kit lens I have.

One of my favorite lenses

I love fast lenses. This one is sharp and focuses fast and precise. I usually use a central focus point to focus precisely and then compose. Professional looking pictures.

Very sharp lens wide open

This lens is very sharp even wide open. I don't use charts to judge the sharpness of a lens so I'm not sure how this lens fares in that kind of test. But when I take pictures of people, I realize that I can count every wrinkle on my subjects' faces. Some of my subjects (mom) don't like this lens because it shows too many wrinkles. There is nothing I don't like about this lens.

it makes a difference

At first I thought this lens will probably work the same as the 20mm f1.7 it should being 5 mm more and f 0.7 difference. However as a low light lens f1.4 just give you a little more low light capability. By better is that somehow all pics taken with this lens is so much more beautiful. Can't seem yo figure what makes it better but everybody seeing pics coming from this lens says that pics is better. This lens may be not as compact or light as the 20 mm but it is definitely better in image quality

Outstanding Prime

I am old school; still using a Pentax MX with 50 mm 1.4. My wife, however, using the Oly OMD/EM5 with kit zoom. I needed a lens more similar to what I was using. (Yes, I zoom with my feet.) All I can say is "OMG." The photo colors, sharpness and ability to shoot a black cat at night, w/o flash, is amazing. I could not be happier. The Pentax is sitting on the dresser; my wife cannot pry the Oly from my hands. Great product and exceptional service and attention from Adorama.

Great all-around lens

I use this with my GH3. The 25mm focal length takes a bit to get used to, but it really is better than a 42mm portrait lens for little kids and fast moving fury animals. With it's shallow DOF and bohak, it may also be the best MFT lens currently available for video. The minuses: it could do a little bit better in low light, be a little bit quieter, and possibly also be weather resistant. I haven't upgraded the firmware yet either, but it seems to struggle a bit with auto-focusing in low light sometimes. The update may help, but I also must state that the manual focus ring is very smooth, much nicer than my 14-42mm Pany, although I don't use MF much thanks to the GH3's complete and utter lack of focus peaking. Would be awesome on a G6 or GX7.

Best output for a normal lens in mFT!

I always turn to this lens and it never fails to deliver quality output every time I attach it on my E-M5. This is the best lens I own out of the several I have already bought/sold. I don't plan to sell this one anytime soon. It is a keeper for sure!

An interesting, all-around good prime

I haven't gotten many hours looking through this glass, but I bought it with a GH3 to have a versatile piece that doubles as a sharp stills lens and a fast, clear video lens. I bought it because I wanted the autofocus option, and I wanted something easy to use while I learn the camera before I put together a dedicated video lens kit. So far, this thing seems great. It is definitely SHARP, and I haven't shot enough video with it yet to decide whether it's too sharp to be as cinematic as I want, but so far it seems like an aspect that is "better to have and not need than need and not have," as I can always sharpen that softness in post.

Fantastic Lens

Great lens. Enables a convenient focal length to shoot fast. Great low light, great DOF, allows focus points foreground or background. Fun, fun, fun lens, everything I needed. As a nubie with interchangeable, this is one of a few great forgiving m4/3 lenses that make the entire system fun, fun, fun.

Sharpest lens: Period!

This is the sharpest lens I've ever used. I have a D800 and 5 stellar lenses for it. This produces skin tones better than another lens. The shot below was taken with this lens on a G3. It was just a grab shot prior to a studio shoot. I was walking to the set, looked to my right, and there was Emma in mixed lighting. I took a shot and kept walking. Because it is soooo sharp on screen I had it enlarge to 20x24. It is just as sharp in print as it is on screen. There is absolutely no noise. iso 160, @ a 60th f1.4. The slight green color cast is from the mixed lighting. I decided not to correct it for the test. You examine the image below and make up your own mind. This lens is forever!

Thee m4/3 lens to have!

This is THEE lens to have for the m4/3 system. Sharp throughout the whole range, fast AF, wonderful colors, and that Leica like rendering. I'm a street shooter, and have been using the SLR Magic HyperPrime f0.95 lens for a while. I got this lens a couple weeks ago after selling my Pentax DSLR to buy it, and have not taken it off since!!! Well worth it!! An incredible lens. I love it. Love it more than my HyperPrime. On a side note, this is NOT a Leica lens, it is a Panasonic lens. It is (afaik) based off of a Leica design. But, short of Leica designing a lens for the m4/3 system, and over charging by 300%, this is as close to Leica glass as we'll see. Is this well worth the money? YES!!!

Super Sharp lens

This lens is very sharp, even at f1.4. the DOF is awesome... I had the ZD50mm f2, and it is great... but when I see some pictures from other brands with the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4, the DOF look great, but not with mine... until now!! It really help to keep the low ISO in low light scenes. I really like it. It is heavier than my 14-54II and bigger, but it is a great lens. I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a fast prime lens for the four thirds system.

Game Changer of m4/3rds

There comes a time when a lens can define a camera system. The Panasonic 25mm Leica DG Summilux ƒ/1.4 is one of those lenses. Before zoom lenses, when I started in photography 35mm SLRs and rangefinders had a 50mm lens that was considered a "normal". The view from it was considered normal perspective. What the eye sees. That is what the 25mm is to the four thirds format because the sensor on a four thirds camera is 1/2 the size of a full frame 35mm camera sensor. The aperture on the lenses ranged from f/0.95 to 3.5, with f/1.4 considered a fast lens. A good compromise between speed and affordability. The 1.4 aperture allows low light photography as well as low depth of field. On most lenses you want as fast aperture because the best sharpness is about 2 stops down from the maximum. I have found this not to be true with this lens. It is very sharp wide open and has a lovely out of focus look.
