Still good camera for videographers, with 4k

I had a similar model of camera from panasonic for forever. It was getting old (10 years) so I decided to upgrade. Build quality is much better, image quality most definitely better. Lots of new features to make sure you get the best image possible in all lighting conditions. I also love the fact it has 4k and wifi capabilities.

EXCELLENT camera. I have had NONE of the weird glitchy problems people seem to have with the Sony and BMD cams (overheating, failures, whatever). Has NEVER failed me. It just works consistently well, and is well designed. There is a learning curve, but well worth the investment in time. I added the GH-5 later so the pair gives me a great system with my various lenses (Sigma Art 18-35 EF lens via Metabones adapter, various Lumix/Leica lenses) for use in the video I do. MFT doesn't/can't deliver the deep DOF you get with full-frame cams, but for the work I do, and with ND filters, I can get some good DOF. Bottom line: It's a winner!

I shot my last three video project on this guy. A feature length and a pair of short films. It puts out amazing quality for such a low price. Sure, the GH5 is nice, but holy crap, at $699 this is an amazing value.

It's just a tool. But the good about it that now this tool cost OK money. So I bought gh4 and going to invest in lenses instead of buying gh5

Will probably need to pick up a speedbooster at some point for additional low light capabilities, and to take back some of the crop lost due to MFT and 4K. So far, very pleased with the output of this workhorse. Has all the tools needed: waveform, histogram, audio levels, level, remote control/viewing, timelape, DCI 4K, UHD, 4:3 Anamorphic, 10-bit 422 external, etc.

As a former Sony APS-C shooter, I was somewhat hesitant to migrate to a MFT sensor. After a limited time shooting with the GH4, I'm glad to have made the switch. The 4K is stunning, and it's great having the options to shoot in DCI 4K, UHD, or 4:3 Anamorphic. The colors look awesome coming straight out of the camera, it handles low light better than expected, and V-Log L (which Adorama threw in as a bonus!) adds 2 more stops of dynamic range and additional grading options. Looking forward to picking up an external recorder/monitor to shoot 10-bit 422. Will also need to pick up a good wide angle lens, as the 2.3x crop in 4K is a factor. All in all, there's a lot of quality and bang for the buck in this package.

This camera has one of the most versatile mounts that can use almost any lens. Unfortunately it does not have an in body stabilizer and makes for shaky video. I would recommend the gx85 for video. This camera can not do video or Stills perfectly and cost is high. Maybe if it was $800 I would consider keeping it.

This is a great 4k capable camera and has received many positive reviews elsewhere. However, there are some issues that increase its cost and these need to be factored in. The main deficiency of this otherwise excellent camera is that it does not do well in low light. This problem can be fixed but requires one, if not two, additional purchases. First, if you get the Metabones Speed Booster, you gain a stop of light, and can also attach non-MFT lenses. The downside is the Booster costs ($) And second, if you don't already own a fast lens, and by fast, I mean f1.8 or faster, then you will need to pony up for that. And sadly, fast lenses aren't usually cheap either, so you can expect to pay another ($) or so for that. But if you do, you will be effectively shooting at f1.2 and that solves your low light problem. However, those purchases are equal to the cost of the camera itself, so it is definitely something to consider. Of course, you can always just add external lighting to deal with low light, but that may or may not be a practical solution (pun intended). My other complaint is that to shoot in the most gradable format, VLOG, Panasonic wants you to pay an additional ($) for that. That seems a bit of a racket if you ask me. I mean they might as well just turn you upside down and shake you to see what falls out of your pockets. If you factor in all these additional costs, the Speed Booster, the fast lens, and V-log, well, that basically puts you in Sony A7S territory, so you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? If you mostly shoot in daylight and rarely in low light, I'd say the GH4 is a no brainer. But if you shoot mostly in low light with little control over the circumstances, then you might as well go with the Sony A7S. Currently, I have the GH4 with the Speedbooster and was able to use an old Sigma 20 mm f1.8 lens, so in my case, this is a reasonable set-up for under 2,000 and I'm pleased with its low light performance shooting in Cinelike-D.
