Like that scanner

The batch scanning feature is great. It takes about 1 hr to scan a full 36 roll of film at 3600 dpi. Had some trouble with overdeveloped color neg film, but probably all scanners do. Scans look slightly soft, but much better after applying USM.

I like it

This was a good tool to digitize the hundreds of old slides we had laying around. The set up was easy, and the plug in for PS Elements (included) was handy. For low budget, personal use this was a good value.

Kodak RFS36000 re-issue?

From the product photo and specs, this scanner is identical to the old Kodak Professional 36000 Films Scanner that I purchased in 2001 for about [$]. That scanner delivered a 4824 x 3231 scan for a file size of about 44.6 megs. The software was almost unusable on Windows ME but worked much better with Windows xp. The accuracy of the autofocus was hit or miss so I often used manual focus, looking for consistant calibration readings. There were some occasional (rare) banding issues. There is no infared dust removal feature (such as Digital Ice) so if you want to do quality work, be prepared to become very familiar with your favorite clone tool. The scanner accepts standard 35mm mounted transparencies through the front and film strips from the side. One problem was loading issues with strips shorter than 4 frames, with 2 frame strips being downright impossible, getting stuck and being very difficult to retrieve. Still, I succeeded in obtaining a lot of commercially usable scans with this scanner. It's certainly worth this much lower price if you need a usable film scanner and you're strapped for cash
