Questions & Answers

Shopper : Does this camera have a swivel LCD?DAVID L : no it does not.BRUCE J : No, it does not. It would be nice to have if you shoot in Live View mode a lot. Because of it's so many deal-making features, this has not been an issue with me. I have the K-5 and a K-7, and am debating which of the K-5 II to get, though I will wait and see if the price goes down any further. That is one great feature of the K-5, it's price considering all that you get with the camera - sensor, solid build, water/dust resistance (I do a lot of my shots in rainforest environment in Costa Rica), and backward ability to use just about any lens Pentax has ever made.JEFF M : No.JEFFREY F : no it does notBERT M : NoKENNETH W : No the Pentax K-5 does not have swivel LCD.DENNIS S : No, A fixed LCD is better for weather sealing. I personally have no use for a swivel LCD or live view for the type of photography I do. If I want video, I use a camcorder for that, which is designed for that purpose.TERRENCE B : NoANDRE Q : No.GEORGE L : No swivel LCD, but does provide live view. BRUCE R : No. LCD is fixed on the backCHARLENE G : The K-5 does not have a swivel LCD.GUY H : Unfortunately, no.BARRY J : No it does not.GREGG S : NoTOM L : Nope! Darn!MARCIA J : NO.
HIEN D D : I have 5 old Pentax Takumar lenses. Can I use these lenses as autofocus lenses on this body ???.DENNIS B : I'm not familiar with those lenses. Sorry. However, I have used Pentax, DA* Series, Sigma, and Tokina with success.JOHN H S : no, manual only...BRUCE M : Unless these lenses are bayonet mount and autofocus lenses, the only way to have autofocus capability is to pair them with an autofocusing teleconvertorMATTHEW L : If your lenses were autofocus on your current body, they will also autofocus on the K-5.ETHAN M : You can use any 'K' Mount on the K5 camera.JOHN H S : No, Manual focus only w//adapter.VERNON P : A K mount from any brand of lens is compatible with the K5. I would imagine that the auto focus would work, too. That said, the K5 does NOT auto focus in movie mode.KAREN V : Yes you can, but you will need a screw mount to PK adapter. You will also need to manually focus and manually set the exposure. PHILLIP D : My understanding is that there were many different versions of lenses with the Takumar label so I will not comment on whether your specific mounts will work on the K-5. I believe adapters can make them fit. What I can tell you is that they will not operate in auto-focus mode. You would have manual mode for exposure and focus. I use an esrly '80s Pentax SMC lens (same K mount as K-5 so no adapter needed) and it is a lot of fun. You can turn on a signal that you are in focus so I would not make manual focus a reason to rule out the fine K-5.LARRY N : No they will be manual focus only. The good thing is that they will have shake reduction since that is in the body. TIMOTHY M : If the lenses are auto focus, then yes they will work as autofocus. If they are manual focus, there will be no autofocus.CLARKE W : If they are Takumar screwmount lenses, you can use them as manual-focus lenses only, with the proper screwmount adapter (Pentax "Adapter B," Adorama SKU: PXAB). If they are "Takumar Bayonet" lenses then no adapter is necessary. Sorry, autofocus will NOT be available in either case. RORY M : Absolutely! This is one of the best features of the Pentax DSLR lineup. PentaxForums can teach you how. You will need a small adapter if your lenses are "M" or thread mount. Be sure you get the true Pentax brand or you will not get infinite focus. I have 6 old lenses that work beautifully on the K-5. Older SMC Takumar lenses contained small amounts of radiation which over time turns the glass yellow. This can be corrected by leaving the lens in UV light for a week or so.STEPHEN F : You can use the old Takumar lenses, but not as auto focus. The camera will, flash a red square in the viewfinder when the center of the lens focuses. Be sure to get a genuine Pentax M42 adaptor for your lenses. The third party versions often don't focus properly at infinity, nor go on and off as easily as the Pentax. The Pentax forums website has some good information on using older lenses. I bought the K5 in part because I wanted use old lenses. I never owned a Penrax before, so picking up old lenses has been a great way to build up my glass collection. The Pentax forums have extensive user reports on various Pentax and third party lenses. Check it out.Marc S : Unfortunately, no. If the lenses were not autofocus to begin with, then they will not be on this body either.FRANCIS G : I don't know what kind of mount those lenses use (K, KA, etc.) You can check the K5 manual, pages 337-339 for lens compatibility info. (Google "Pentax K5 manual"--easy to find.) Looks like any Pentax autofocus lens with an A (auto) setting on the Apeture ring should work. There's also a control in one of the camera menus to enable autofocus without an auto setting on the apeture ring. By the way, I like this camera a lot!KEVIN R : Hein, As far as I know, there aren't any autofocus Takumar lenses: the "auto" on the lenses refers to the automatic aperture feature. Since the lenses don't have an autofocus coupler and helix, you'll be focusing manually. That said, all old Takumar lenses can be used on the K-5 in manual mode, and some can be used in aperture priority mode. Lenses with threaded mounts at the base will require an adapter to attach to the camera's bayonet mount; Pentax sell one for around US $30. Any Pentax-made bayonet mount lens will attach directly to the camera.DAVID D : It depends, you did not mention if they are autofocus lenses. If they are old manual focus lenses then no, using them on this new autofocusing camera will not make these old lenses autofocus. You would still have to manually focus the lenses while in use on this camera.RICHARD M : No, unfortunately not. The older screw mount Takumars (M42 mount) need an adapter and then will still only manually focus.
Shopper : Does this camera body accept the old K-mount Pentax lens?MICHAEL C : Yes, I have used the old K and Ka lenses. FREDERICK K : All Pentax lenses can be mounted to all Pentax digital SLRs.SUSAN H : To my knowledge, yes. I have not used that capability but have read about it online. Plenty of instructions available to guide you through the process.STEVEN A : I have not used any old Pentax K-Mount lenses with mine, but generally, older K-mount lenses can be used with the new SLRs with K-mount attachments, except that obviously you will lose certain electronic functions such as auto-focus, and AE modes for aperture etc. But using manual focus, and so on would be fine.ALBERT Y : Yes.MARK W : Yes, but lens functions will be manually controlled only.JIM P : Generally, yes, but it depends on how old the lens is as it may only be usable in Manual mode.JAMES D : yes. I use 4 old K-mount lenses with my K-5.KERMIT K : Yes! But with the K mount M lenses you will have to set your camera to M for Manual and set bother the aperture and the shutter speed yourself. The camera will tell you when the focus is right and it will choose the ISO for you. The K 5 (actually every dslr since the ^istD) is backwardly compatible (provided you have the old screw mount to K mount adapter) with any Pentax lens made since about 1960! (And that goes for other makers "universal" screw mount or later K mount lenses as well. I often drag out the screw mount adapter with my ancient 17mm "fish eye" lens. When using any compatible lens, remember that because the dslr sensor is smaller than the old exposure area of a 35mm film, field of view of any lens (except DA lenses made just for digital slr's) new or old is about 1.6 times that of the lens when used on a film slr. So my 17 mm fish eye, screw mount lens on a dslr is really a 24mm fish eye lens. I've even dragged out my beloved 105mm screw mount short telephoto lens and used it with my K 5! If you've never used a camera with which you had to sett shutter speed and aperture, a good rule is to set the shutter to twice the effective millimeter of the lens, and the aperture open enough that the effective ISOI the (K5 or other dslr) camera chooses will be no more than 1/2 its highest claimed possible setting. And enjoy your older Pentax lenses again. They were great lenses when manufactured, and they still are! I've stuck with Pentax since 1965 primarily because of its policy of backward compatibility..JARRELL T : Yes, it will. Even the old screw type will work with an adapter. The Manual lenses will work in manual mode. Jarrell TharpCHRISTOPHER W : Yes, it does! I love Pentax dSLRs because they accept have kept the same mount for years!ALLISON V : Yes, Pentax DSLRs are compatible with K mount lenses, including manual and autofocus lenses that were produced for film cameras.MICHAEL L : Yes, it will accept any K-mount lens, even fully manual ones. They'll of course still be fully manual, but they work.MICHAEL F : Yes, but they do not work automatically. You cannot use the camera's internal light meter or auto focus. In addition, the lenses become functionally different lengths because the sensor is not "full frame". So a 50 mm lens becomes a 75, etc. For me this was a problem because my favorite manual lens was 90 mm portrait lens. On the K-5 it is a 135 mm lens, which is not what I want for portraits. I ended up buying a Pentax 55 mm lens. Very good for low light situations. Otherwise I find my Pentax 18-135 (28-200 equivalent) handles just about all my needs.SCOTT B : Yes. All Pentax K mount style lenses will mount directly. M42 screw mount lenses will mount with a K-M42 adapter that attaches to the camera body itself. Obviously, the older lenses such as the screw mount and M series will not take advantage of the auto aperture capabilities of the camera and you will have to run in manual for those. I look at this as a great feature as there is some tremendous old glass available.WILLIAM A : Definitely. I've used a variety. If there is no A setting on the lens, you have to configure the menu to allow you to set the aperture on the lens, but that's just how I leave it set all the time. Great camera!SRINUVASU T : Yes, any K-mount lens will work. For older manual focus lenses, there's a menu option where you can tell the camera it's focal length, which will activate the in-camera Shake Reduction for those lenses. One of the reasons I went Pentax when i got my first digital SLR was for its backwards compatibility with old k-mount lenses. I love being able to grab 30+ year old glass off ebay, or yard sales, and have it workRICHARD K : Yes, K mount. But not the old M42 screw mount.PETER M : YES ... ALL OF THEMVICENCIO B : Yes It does! Full manual controls (Focus and Exposure) only with Non Auto lenses.SRINIVAS G : Yes, Thats what Pentax's claim, that Every Camera body made by Pentax accepts every lens ever made by Pentax. However I have not personally tried them. I do have some DA and FA lenses and they all work perfectly fine. Trust this helps you in your decision making.KENDELL D : Yes. It works with all Pentax Lenses. The screw mount and lenses for the midsize cameras need an adapter but the K-mount do not. Check PentaxForums website if you're a Pentax owner or looking to be. Personally I'd spend the money and get the K5IIs. I have the K5 and it's a good camera but Pentax supposedly made the autofocus better on the new ones.STEPHEN B : Every K-Mount lens ever made by Pentax will fit on the K5.

Pentax K-5

Camera and Lens arrived they are both beautiful. Camera had only 107 pictures previously taken. Great build, awesome results. Still on a steep learning curve with new equipment but am certain this camera will be a solid replacement to my Nikon D200. Right now my two favorite aspects are: In body stabilization and 100% coverage viewfinder. I was tired of the 95% offered by my D200. I want a camera that will show what I shot on the finished product. I am not a fan of "cropping" or off camera edits. What you see is what you get with my shooting. So Far So Good. Highly recommend asking for Frank Brown. He beat the competition by a landslide. The competition offered a refurbished body; however, this unit was as close to New In Box that I could ask for, without the NIB pricetag.

Solid build and solid performance

Use it for general photography and family snaps. So much better than the K-x. The good: * Excellent build * Excellent usability * Very good high iso performance * Very good backward lens compatibility (in body SR) * Good auto exposure * Good auto white balance Not so good: * If you are left eyed: green button placement * Flash exposure blow outs

Outstanding Value

I bought this back at the end of 2010 as my first DSLR. I put a lot of research into this decision, and it came down to the K-5 versus the Nikon D7000. I ended up going with the K-5 due to a lower price, better performance, and access to my father's old k-mount lenses. I don't regret this choice one bit. The k-5 provides outstanding image quality, and fantastic usability. The only thing I really find lacking about it is video functionality and performance, which is not to say it's terrible. It's just not as good as it should be.

Everything you'd want from a camera

The K-5 paired with a WR lens (such as my Pentax DA* 16-50) is an amazing tool for photography in any weather conditions. I've used it successfully rain, snow and extreme cold. It does have problems sometimes locking accurate focus indoors, which can be annoying. Otherwise it's the perfect camera for me.

Pentax K5

I use the K5 for wildlife, still life and portraits. It is a beautiful camera that is fast and the warmness of the photos rival film. I've only used Pentax and stepped up to the K5 from the K20. It was like going from a volkswagon to a Ferrari!

Pentax K5 an outstanding camera

This camera is astonishing, and for the price Adorama sells it for, it is a STEAL. The image quality is amazing, shooting at iso 6400 is incredible, to have relatively noise free images at THAT setting is just insane, and with the two little consumer zoom weather-proof lenses, how could you go wrong? I have a collection of really good Pentax glass (FA* lenses) that REALLY make this camera shine. I see why the review sites scored this camera SO highly. Nikon/Canon buyers, you really need to rethink your decisions; in this price range, this camera cannot be matched. The feature set is astonishing, as is the 400 page owners manual. Lens correction IN the camera, individual noise reduction settings, I cannot say enough about this thing. Weatherproof to boot, and it is built like a TANK; the controls tight, accurate, and obviously made of first class switches and materials throughout. I look forward to their upcoming pro-series cameras.

Pentax does IT for me!!

This camera is my favorite camera of FIFTY years of buying and owning cameras. It is ALL I want in a camera, with the capacity to use every lense of K-mount format. Man,how about HDR built in and image stablization, built in??Is that great or what?? This is a class-act, that gets little recognition, from the Nikanon gang. Love their (PENTAX) glass, too! RJM

Made the right choice

Quite happy with it so far, but hasn't been used much. Biggest con I've seen so far is the quality of video (highest setting). At 70/30fps quality is very good, but at 1080/25fps portions can be a bit choppy. Overall, quite impressed with the camera. Thinking about buying another one.

My First DSLR

This is my first DSLR and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I know that there are newer versions out there but the only big difference that I could tell is that they are better at video. The Pentax easy to use and learn. This is great for a beginner like me. It also has enough features to keep me happy as I develop my skills.

Great Camera

This is a great camera, as the overwhelming majority of all reviews indicate. Easy transition from other Pentax cameras. "Hard" buttons for frequently used functions, easily navigable menus, great low-light performance, quiet shutter, comfortable in the hand, solid, attractive, fantastic image quality, many customizable features. Some will say auto-focus lags competitors, but after a month and a half, I don't see it--it's been very quick and very accurate with all of my lenses, even in low-light.

Worthy upgrade of the K-7

I love the versatility of the K-7. It is a photographer's camera. However, low light noise was just too much. The K-5 carries all the friendliness of the K-7 with a much better sensor. There are also improvements in allowing frequently used controls to be customized.

One of the best camera's on the market.

This camera was for my wife. She's retired now, but was a professional photographer. The pentax k5 Gives her the full ability to take GREAT photos. We Combined the camera with the pentax Fa31mm f1.8 AL Limited edition lens. Both products are FIVE STAR(*****) EXCELLENT. I would like to add the buying experience thru Adorama was also a FIVE STAR(*****) EXCELLENT. Thank you Meyer.

Pro camera at beginner prices

Bought this after comparing it to the likes of Canon T4i and the Nikon D7000. Wanted to get the Pentax 645D but that one was pretty out of budget :-). This camera is great. Two of the best features that no DSLR in this price range offer are image stabilization in the camera body and Pentraprism viewfinder. Add to that this camera is weather resistant and coupled with weather resistant lenses can handle any environmental condition you can throw at it. Does not have fancy features like tilt screen LCD or does not have thousands of lenses available like Nikon/Canon ( but honestly, does anybody buy all lenses made my any mfg). K5 is compatible with all K mount lenses made by Pentax including older manual focus ones and that means to the beginner photography enthusiast, you can really explore the realms of photography without making a hole in your pocket because image stabilized lenses do cost a lot. Overall, great camera excellent construction and great photo quality.

addicting camera

I usually don't write reviews about product but I decided to make an exception for this camera. The K5 is just fantastic, I can't let it down. Image quality is phenomenal, use of the camera becomes second instinct, feels like a camera and not a toy. One recommendation I would make is: get a limited lens to take advantage of both the quality of the camera and the compactness. With the use of prime limited lens, the camera is easy to carry around (remember:"the best camera is the one that you have with you") Well done Pentax!

great body; improvement over K-7

I've had a K-7 since early 2010, and it's a great camera. But when the new K-5 ii models came out, I found the original K-5 irresistably priced. Improvements include a better sensor, faster and more accurate auto-focus, and greatly improved high ISO performance. What's unchanged are the wonderful build quality, great ergomonics, weather-sealing, and compatability with decades of Pentax glass: of the lenses I typically carry, 8 are vintage PK or PKA mount manual-focus, and only 1, my DA 70/2.4, is AF--and I often shoot that manually, too. I still have my K-7, though it serves mostly as a backup now. Unless you need a full-frame sensor and/or even better AF, or have already bought heavily into another system and lens mount, the Pentax K-5 is a great choice.

Wicked better value than Nikon

Pentax cameras are focused on usability. From its entry level, you get in-body stabilization that effectively makes ALL lenses have images stabilization. It works just as well compared to the in-lens stabilizations offered by other brands. Both entry and advanced level bodies are weather sealed. Something other brands do not offer. No more worrying about some rain washing away your investment. The controls are laid out very intuitively and the grips are ergonomically designed. The menu system is very well organized as they put the most frequently used items up front. My main body is a Nikon D700 for professional work. If they had a full-frame equivalent of the K-5, I'd switch in a heartbeat. Check out their WR (weather resistant) lenses. Pentax offers kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) with weather sealing at a very affordable price point. These kit lenses will let you go on travel and shoot in inclement weather unlike other brands. I'm definitely keeping an eye out on the Pentax full-frame body, rumoured to be out at the end of 2013.

Pentax K 5

I upgraded from the Pentax Kx. Really impressed with the K5's ISO range and ability to grab low light shots. Con would be that it is not easy in the beginning to find camera controls but will adapt after getting used to camera. Great price for a camera in this class.

out of the box (update)

By over-the-hill

I've had the camera for two weeks now. While a nasty cold has kept me from trying everything I wanted to test the camera with I have had opportunity to test its latitude, color accuracy and freedom from digital noise. Poor light conditions (especially on cloudy days) often mean pictures with digital noise in deep blues, greens and blacks. One thing I like to do is to photograph trains, so a shutter speed of 1/500 is about as slow as I dare go. With the lens open to f4.5 and 1/500th second...

Pentax steps up and delivers a top-of-the-line APS-C camera--the K-5 Digital SLR Camera Body, featuring a low-noise 16.3MP CMOS high resolution sensor, sensitivity up to a best-in-class ISO 51200, 7 frames-per-second shooting capability and a responsive, high-precision 11-point auto-focus system. A high performing PRIME II imaging engine produces rich-gradation, very high resolution digital images. Plus, full HD video at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The K-5 makes advances in plenty of other areas as well, such as faster autofocusing speed and an upgraded High Dynamic Range (HDR) function that can even be used without a tripod. A bright, clear 3" LCD display with 921,000 dots resolution makes it easy to compose and review your images, or use the bright viewfinder for composition, secure in the knowledge that the highly accurate 77-segment metering system will deliver the goods every time. Shake Reduction image stabilization makes it possible to shoot at 2.5 to 4 shutter speeds slower without seeing camera shake in your photos. A lens is not included.

And all of this photo goodness is packed into a body of sturdy, lightweight magnesium alloy on a chassis of stainless steel. The 77 special seals in the body give you a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant camera, for reliable operation in harsh conditions, at temperatures as low as 14 deg.F (-10 deg.C). An extremely reliable shutter unit provides a top shutter speed of 1/8000 second and is tested to 100,000 shutter releases.
