Questions & Answers

GILLES A : Does the Pentax MX-1 have a step zoom?MR. C : It seems to me that the MX-1 has a stepless zoom. It can zoom to, for example, 1.13X, etc.ROBERT M : Hi Talia No, it does not. This is a great feature, though. The Panasonic Lumix LX-7 does have it! Thanks RobertGUILLERMO P : The MX-1 doesn't have step zoom function like the Canon S95.GARY M : No, the MX-1 does not have a step zoom.PAUL H : Hi: By step do you mean by focal length? It is "infinitely" adjustable with the W/T lever next to the shutter release. I have really enjoyed this camera and I really like its fast lens. I used it last week during a conference in a large ballroom to pull the speaker in close for pictures. Great camera. I hope this helps.JEFFREY P : No, the power zoom is continuous.GRANT J : Not in the sense that it stops at each stage of the zoom in millimeters. The screen does indicate how much you have zoomed the lens (1x, 2x, etc.). The zoom can be accurately controlled in this way.FRANK H : No step zoom, hopefully that will be added in a firmware update.RONALD Y : No; just a variable zoom. I have a LX5 from Panasonic that has that capability. Makes it very convenient to visualize standard focal lengths.GLEN M : This option is not available on the MX-1. However, the zoom lever on top of the camera is very easy to use.VICTOR C : MX-1 has a stepless zoom. It has a horizontal bar that shows you where you are between the W and T range.ERIC H : No, it doesn't.KENNETH B : No.
Shopper : can you change lenses?TRAVIS D : No. The lens is fixed to the body, think of it like a point & shoot.JORGE DE S : Unfortunately no, it has a fixed lens.ALEX R : Nope its all built in, but it is a very sharp and quick lens.CARL B : No, it is a fixed 4x zoom lens. There is an 58 mm slip on filter adapter where you can attach aftermarket add on lenses, but the bulk and the quality of those after market products is questionable and I would not want to degrade the superb sharp optics that Pentax put in the MX-1.RYAN J L : NoRAYMOND M : No you can't change lenses. It's a fixed zoom lens.John K : No you can not change lens. The one it comes with is very good, sharp, excellent color and contrast. It retracts back into the body to make it more compact.TIM S : You cannot change lenses on this camera. This is part of the reason I purchased it. I was looking for a new experience where i didn't have to lug around my DSLR with all the lenses, everything in one place. It has served me well in my photo a day project so far. The most noticeable shortcoming is the processor that takes forever to save down a picture after a snap. Basically looking at a 2 second delay after every picture before you can review it. That being said I still love it. The range with this lens is pretty fantastic and the macro is out of this world given the price etc.RICHARD G : No...lens is a zoom but non interchangeable.STEVEN C : No, this is a fixed lens camera.JUSTIN K : No, it has a built in zoom lens.ALLISON S : No, the lens zooms but does not come off.RUO X : No. This is not an interchangeable lens camera.JEROME W : No, it is a fixed lens camera.STEVEN W : No, it's a fixed zoom lens. This is not an ILC.DANIEL C : No.
norm s : does the mx1 come with a printed users guide with detailed instructions , or do you have to download them from a CD?John K : Yes it comes with a printed Manuel.RUO X : Yes, it has a printed manual.ROBERT C : Yes, it has a printed guide.

What an amazing camera

I can't believe its low light ability, fast focusing and overall competence. I haven't tried the video yet, but i'm sure it's up to the standards of Pentax. I can't believe you can get a camera like this for under $250. It's also a perfect companion to my Pentax K-r dSLR. P.S.; Adorama has gone to the top of my camera vendors list.

Classic beauty - serious potential

A beautiful camera. Beyond the really attractive classic design, this camera just feels good and substantial in the hand. Nicely laid out, very usable Pentax menus. The lens if fast, quick focusing, accurate, and features incredible close macro(1cm). I would have liked a hot shoe for the option of an OVF or external flash, but the camera's on board flash is well designed and very adequate. A great alternative to my (Pentax)SLR - this is an excellent street camera and is good enough to please the serious shooter. It has been discontinued by Ricoh - too bad. A lot of camera for the dough!

Pentax mx-1

I was looking for a compact camera to use when it was not convenient to use my DSLR. While it will only fit in a larger pocket it is still considered a compact. It is quite heavy though compared to most compacts so if something of a mass bouncing around in your pocket bothers you a case on a belt will do. This is truly a great camera. It is loaded with features comparable to my Pentax K-5. As many reviews state it is a bit slow writing to the card especially in RAW but in my opinion the 2 seconds or so that it takes are not too bad. The focus though is quite fast and accurate. The pictures are sharp and the lens focal length is more than adequate for most situations. Although it does not have a viewfinder the LCD screen is clear and bright. The fast aperture (1.8 to 2.5) is a real plus. Overall I found a camera I can use for lots of years. The only real drawback for me is the size. For the money though this kind of quality cannot be touched in a smaller camera so what is given up in size is more than made up for in features, versatility and image quality.

Awesome camera

This isn't the lightest or smallest camera to carry around, but I like the heft of the brass plates used in the build of the camera. The way the paint wears off to show off the brass will be something cool I'll be expecting as I use the camera. There's no viewfinder, but considering I wear glasses and they always seem to get in my way, I don't particularly miss it. The macro is quiet impressive. The lens can focus as close as 1cm, and the zoom, digital I think?, gets you x1.95. My photo is a close up of a silver quarter at maximum zoom. The lens are not capable of much zoom, but that's the tradeoff for the wide aperture at both wide and tele. One thing that really bugged me are the lug mounts. Where they are located makes the camera tilt upwards rather than hang flush with your body. I have no clue what Pentax/Ricoh was thinking... The camera doesn't seem to use a standard USB port of some variant to connect to a PC, so replacing a cable won't be as easy as using another USB cable, which I have plenty of. After taking a photo, the camera is a bit slow to write to memory. Not only that, it can often lock oyu out of doing anything else for the next 1-2 seconds. Overall, I love my new camera and hope to have years of fun with it.

Great camera

Great carry camera. I use it to replace my SLR when I need to travel light. Image quality is very good, easy to handle. Gives you creative control over your picture taking. Great built quality.

Excellent advanced point & shoot camera

I use the MX-1 as a lightweight backup camera when I do not want to carry the K-5 and lenses. The high quality and fast lens of the MX-1 produces sharp and detailed images. I especially like the macro function of the camera.

Amazing sharp pictures

For the price, I don't think you can get a more capable compact camera. The HDR mode and the Night Handheld modes are great also.
