Finding a compact camera with a wide angle lens can be a challenge. Finding one with manual controls and optical image stabilization that takes great pictures is almost impossible, but Ricoh managed to pull it off. I wish I could've given the camera 4.5 stars instead of 4 because it's better than good, just not perfect. The GX100 has the versatility to produce everything from smooth, highly saturated images reminiscent of slide film to gritty black and whites; it's all in the settings. If you're the type of person who likes some semblance of photographic control then you should find the GX100 rewarding.

As with many of us, the move away from a viewfinder is akin to the loss of a friend; dependable, performs in a pinch and renders wonderul reflections from immediate histories; our specular story-teller. Although the transformation has been excruciating (and, there will always be a need for the Leica), the Ricoh Caplio GX100 has lifted me from my malaise and provided a window of wonderment. The manual dexterity of the camera is excellent; the image quality is refined and will become better as I learn; its scale is fine for my linen jacket pocket and it weighs just enough to remind me of its presence next to my hip. It would be easy to critique certain fetures, but then I can also find my own inadequacies. Nothing will relplace the Leica, but the Caplio is quickly finding its way into the alleys and backwaters of my travels, and, at this point it is close.
