Landscape usage ... Resolution ..corner to corner at any aperature. color accuracy, Ease of use and size. What is great about it ; is the size and weight that produces remarkable images. Also a fair price No negatives about this lens

sharp as a razor

from saint george  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This thing is amazing, super small and lightweight! Sharper than my 45 mm tse canon lens! except that there is no tilt. Every picture I take is razor sharp.the bokeh is dreamy!

Excellent compact lens

from Houston, TX  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought this lens to use with my Sony A7. Autofocus is not the fastest, but it's precise. The picture is sharp sharp sharp, and the bokeh is dreamy. I would really reccomend this lens to anyone who has Sony A7 or Sony A7R

Great so far

from Philadelphia PA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have only had the lens a few days but it seems to be working out well. I am not that keen on the lens hood as it make it awkward to have a polarizing filter on at the same time. Aside from that the focus is nice and sharp.

sharp & good color lens

Awesome! What else to say?

Ideal les

from Houston  -  Photo Enthusiast

The 55mm Zeiss truly lives up to the branding with great contrast and color rendition. The DOF goes from a creamy bokeh to a true depth, and if you are looking for the special lens; this is it.

Right On The Mark

from California  -  Pro Photographer

The lens has not been in my bag long enough to give a complete review but first day out in the field; 1) very sharp 2) quick auto focus 3) small and lightweight 4) everything one would expect from a 'Zeiss' product. The lens cap and included sunshade are innovative but allows one to keep the shade on the lens in the camera bag as well as conveniently on the camera when in use.

Excellent prime

from San Francisco, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

I bought the 35mm prime with the Sony A7r. I think they are both great partners in crime. For one, this 35mm is the right size to match the small body of the A7's. Perfect for on-the-go and travel photographers. Lens is crazy sharp and all around excellent build quality (metallic and solid). Even though it is a f/2.8 and which it had one more stop to go, for the size, quality, and weight, I can forgive Sony for not trying for faster specs. It really is hard to implement faster specs without creating bulk. It is after all autofocusing. If you want, Zeiss also makes a line called Touit. YMMV. One of the cons with this lens is it doesn't do macro but you shouldn't be shooting macros with it anyway.

Questions about this item:

PHILIP K  I use the Sonnar 55/1.8 on a Sony A7R and I don't know if it will work on a NEX 7. Sorry. I assume it will but you need to check with someone who knows Sony mounts and the use of this lens on the NEX bodies. It will focus down to about 20 inches but I would not consider it to be a macro-capable lens. But with the 9 blade aperture and wide open, one gets terrific bokeh effects so that it certainly conveys a sense of macro images when shooting in its close-up range. I have a Canon FD macro 100mm lens that I use for macro with the A7R so I seldom try to get into the macro realm with the 55/1.8 lens.
Gerald B  Hello, Faut-il régler la TVA? merci
JAMES K  I do not speak French. The 55mm Sony FE is the best optic I have ever used. Absolutely magnificent.
