  • SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor): Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion): Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration for sharp, clear images with well defined colors.
  • Superb Minimum Focusing Distance: With the ability to focus as closely as 3.9 feet (1.2m), this telephoto lens also lets you move in for dramatic shots of people, natural subjects and close-up details.
  • In-Camera Image Stabilization: Works with the SteadyShot INSIDE. image stabilization built into Sony a DSLRs.
  • Focus Range Limiter: Used when you need the quickest possible autofocus response within a certain focal range. The lens will only autofocus within the set range eliminating AF atfocal lengths outside.

Exceptional Pro Fast Mid-tele lens

By

from Chicago, IL  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I use this lens on my A99, and shoot it at f2.8 or 4 whenever possible. It's tack sharp, from f4 on down, and f2.8 is as sharp or sharper than either the new Canon or Nikon 24-70 f2.8. This is also an excellent portrait lens for in the field (I use its shorter Zeiss counterpart in the studio), but it is large and heavy. The color rendition, contrast and sharpness of this mid-tele rivals that of several primes due to its new coatings. Flare and CA are non-existent. The weather-sealing is excellent, and tempts you to take it into the rain-forest (and make you trek with it for hours) for some awesome images. The autofocus is silent and near-instant, great for sports tracking, hot-air balloons, concerts. This is a top-notch hunk of glass that will render images as well or better than what you can imagine, but it is very heavy. Exceptionally well made.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  is this lens image stabilized ?
SUZANNE L  It uses in body image stabilization. It is the best lens I've ever owned. I bought it for indoor sports and it's great in low light. I use a monopod because it's heavy but my pictures are always in focus.
