About Sony A7R

No other full frame, interchangeable-lens camera is this light or this portable. 36 MP of rich detail. A true-to-life 2.4 million dot OLED viewfinder. Wi-Fi sharing and an expandable shoe system. It's all the full-frame performance you ever wanted in a compact size that will change your perspective entirely

World's smallest lightest interchangeable lens full-frame camera
Sony's Exmor image sensor takes full advantage of the Full-frame format, but in a camera body less than half the size and weight of a full-frame DSLR.

Ultimate full frame 36.3 MP resolution with gapless sensor lens design
The unrivaled 36.3-effective-megapixel resolution and outstanding optical lens performance are optimized by removing the optical low-pass filter. In combination with the new BIONZ X image processing engine, this design enhances the reproduction of the finest of details. In addition, the sensor includes a new gapless lens design that fills the space between neighboring pixels to significantly increase light collecting efficiency and realize high corner-to-corner image quality.

Fast Intelligent AF for responsive, accurate, and greater operability with full frame sensor
The high-speed image processing engine and improved algorithms combine with optimized image sensor read-out speed to achieve ultra-high-speed AF despite the use of a full-frame sensor.

New Eye AF control
Even when capturing a subject partially turned away from the camera with a shallow depth of field, the face will be sharply focused thanks to extremely accurate eye detection that can prioritize a single pupil. A green frame appearsover the prioritized eye when focus has been achieved for easy confirmation. EyeAF can be used when the function is assigned to a customizable button, allowing users to instantly activate it depending on the scene.

Fully compatible with Sony's E-mount lens system and new full-frame lenses
To take advantage of the lightweight on-the-go body, the 7 is fully compatible with Sony's E-mount lens system and expanded line of E-mount compact and lightweight full-frame lenses from Carl Zeiss and Sony's premier G-series.

Direct access interface for fast, intuitive shooting control
Quick Navi Pro displays all major shooting options on the LCD screen so you can rapidly confirm settings and make adjustments as desired without searching through dedicated menus. When fleeting shooting opportunities arise, you'll be able to respond swiftly with just the right settings.

High contrast 2.4M dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing
View every scene in rich detail with the XGA OLED Tru-Finder, which features OLED improvements and the same 3-lens optical system used in the flagship a99. The viewfinder faithfully displays what will appear in your recording, including the effects of your camera settings, so you can accurately monitor the results. You'll enjoy rich tonal gradations and 3 times the contrast of the a99. High-end features like 100% frame coverage and a wide viewing angle are also provided.

3.0" 1.23M dot LCD tilts for high and low angle framing
The tiltable 3.0" (1,229k dots) Xtra Fine LCD Display makes it easy to photograph over crowds or low to capture pets eye to eye by swinging up approx. 84° and down approx. 45°. Easily scroll through menus and preview life thanks to WhiteMagic technology that dramatically increases visibility in bright daylight. The large display delivers brilliant-quality still images and movies while enabling easy focusing operation.

Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi® or NFC
Connectivity with smartphones for One-touch sharing/One-touch remote has been simplified with Wi-Fi®/NFC control. In addition to Wi-Fi support for connecting to smartphones, the a7 also supports NFC (near field communication) providing "one touch connection" convenience when transferring images to Android smartphones and tablets. Users need only touch devices to connect; no complex set-up is required. Moreover, when using Smart Remote Control a feature that allows shutter release to be controlled by a smartphone connection to the smartphone can be established by simply touching compatible devices.

PC control w/ remote video capture control
Remote Camera Control allows you to control your a7 from your PC using a USB cab l e. Feature control has also been updated to include video capture control.

14-bit RAW output for rich tonal gradation
14-bit RAW image data of extremely high quality is outputted by the a7. This data fully preserves the rich detail generated by the image sensor during the 14-bit A/D conversion process. When developed with Sony's Image Data Converter RAW development software, these images deliver the superb photographic expression and rich gradation that only 14-bit data can offer.

New BIONZ X image processing engine
Sony proudly introduces the new BIONZ X image processing engine, which faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, via extra high-speed processing capabilities. Together with front-end LSI (large scale integration) that accelerates processing in the earliest stages, it enables more natural details, more realistic images, richer tonal gradations and lower noise whether you shoot still images or movies.

Full HD movie at 24p/60i/60p w/uncompressed HDMI output
Capture Full 1920 x 1080 HD uncompressed clean-screen video files to external recording devices via an HDMI® connection in 60p and 60i frame-rates. Selectable in-camera AVCHD codec frames rates include super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p. MP4 codec is also available for smaller files for easier upload to the web.

Up to 5 fps shooting to capture the decisive moment
When your subject is moving fast, you can capture the decisive moment with clarity and precision by shooting at speeds up to 5 frames per second. New faster, more accurate AF tracking, made possible by Fast Hybrid AF, uses powerful predictive algorithms and subject recognition technology to track every move with greater speed and precision.

Multi-interface Shoe for flash and microphone flexibility
Unlike conventional cameras, the a7 features the advanced Multi-Interface Shoe that dramatically expands compatibility with Sony digital imaging accessories, thus raising the potential for photo/movie shooting.

4K Still image output by HDMI8 or WiFI for viewing on 4K TVs
Enjoy Ultra High Definition slide shows directly from the camera to a compatible 4K television. The a7 converts images for optimized 4K image size playback (8MP). Enjoy expressive rich colors and amazing detail like never before. Images can be viewed via an optional HDMI or WiFi.

TRILUMINOUS color outputs wider color gamut to compatible devices
TRILUMINOS Color technology, allows you to experience photos and movies in rich, natural colors on any TV equipped with a TRILUMINOS Display. The expanded color gamut immerses you in those unforgettably colorful moments, from the complex shades in a shimmering blue sky to the delicate skin in a baby's face.

PlayMemories Camera Apps allows feature upgrades
Personalize your camera by adding n ew features of your choice with PlayMemories Camera Apps. Find apps to fit your shooting style from portraits, detailed close-ups, sports, time lapse, motion shot and much more. Use apps that shoot, share and save photos using Wi-Fi that make it easy to control and view your camera from smartphone, and post photos directly to Facebook or backup images to the cloud without connecting to a computer.11

Image Data Converter
Advanced features enable manipulation, conversion and management of full-resolution RAW images. You can expertly adjust exposure, white balance, tonal curves, saturation, contrast, hue and sharpness as well as apply DRO and vignetting compensation. Bundled Remote Camera Control software also lets you remotely activate and deactivate still/movie recording and control various camera settings from a PC.

rust in Sony 7r

An announcement that Sony 7R is moisture protected is false. My camera never being under the rein, no spills, but it is rusty all over. I spent 2 weeks in Madagascar in moist climate, and it is all rusty. Sony void my warranty and it costs me a small fortune. The picture quality is outstanding, but it is better to use the camera inside. Who want to do outdoor - not recommended. There are plenty complains in Internet.

Great camera, needs lenses!

By

from Miami Fl.  -  Pro Photographer

I'm not a pro photographer but a pro filmmaker and a pro artist/painter. I bought the camera because it's outstanding 36 megapixel resolution with which to photograph my work. Great camera, outstanding definition, light weight but solid build. My only 'but' is that there are very few lens choices for a 'full frame' Sony E mount camera, hopefully that will change with time.

Lovely images, a couple of snags

By

from New York NY  -  Professional

In high contrast situations, the camera succeeeds better than my Canon 5D Mark III capturing highlight and shadow detail. Good auto and semi-auto settings. Not much noise at high ISOs. (I try to stay at 6400 and below, but it can make credible images at 10,000.) The LCD screen got scratched badly almost instantly after I bought it (and I'm nice to my equipment). It is soft as butter. It needs a hard protector, wish the Adorama guy had told me instead of giving me protectors that are like Saran Wrap. Battery life is bad--I bought three. And the usb from the camera method of recharging is ridiculous. I bought an external charger--come on, Sony. And here's the problem with the external charger. It lies. It shows the battery as charged, but sometimes the battery is just empty, according to the camera, and you have to flip the charger in the socket, spin around three times and say some magic words, and the battery will actually recharge. The phone support guy at Sony said to put it in the wall socket right side up. I am in a house in Mexico where all the plugs are sideways. So, which way is up in Mexico? Some of the menus are baffling and the manual is sketchy. I've been learning to set custom features with online searches, not from Sony. Despite the irritations, this is a beautiful, lightweight camera that takes dreamy images. I've got the 24-70 Zeiss lens and the big flash for jobs, and it's a good kit.

A Provisional Assessment

By

from Washington, DC  -  Photo Enthusiast

My evaluation is somwhat provisional because even though I have a full-frame camera, I don't have a compatible lens as yet. The images are great -- sensor is as good if not better than my Nikon D600, however, the reviews that I read are accurate -- it is slow to focus - perhaps the major drawback- and the shuuter is quite noisy making candid street photgraphy s bit of a problem. In retrospect, I probably should have tried to a7 before purchasing the a7R

Wow

By

from Hummelstown, PA  -  Photo Enthusiast

Not a sports or action camera.....but for landscape it is sublime. Great resolution and dynamic range. The initial Sony/Zeiss FE lenses are phenomenal. I also am using my Canon EF mount lenses via the Metabones Smart Adapter III. Autofocus is slow, but accurate and usable. Love this camera.

Rewards the patient photographer

By

from Syracuse  -  Pro Photographer

I love this camera already- but it's not perfect for everyone. It really does deliver mind blowing resolution, great color and dynamic range in smallest full frame package yet. It's a little slow and fiddly to operate if you are coming from a DSLR but if you are used to the NEX system it will feel familiar once you settle on the configuration of the many customizable buttons. Mastering the functions of this thing takes some time and effort but with a bit of patience it's quirks can be overcome & this camera will reward you with stunning images. Its a substantial feeling camera that is still small enough to take everywhere so while it may not match the speed of operation or the range of AF lenses of a high end DSLR, it will be with you more of the time, and the image quality it enables will blow away most bigger cameras.

Great for some uses

By

from Long Island NY  -  Photo Enthusiast

The image quality is exceptional when taking static subjects so long as you use speeds at least 2 times the focal length (Shutter vibration) Hard to get clear pictures of Grandkids when they're running around. Will keep my Cannon 5D mark 2 for fast moving subjects. EVF is a pleasure to use. Menu is a mess but you can customize important settings. Bottom line - You get Nikon 800 quality in a package half the weight and much lower price.

Quite simply, outstanding

By

from Bowling Green, OH  -  Photo Enthusiast

I graduated from the NEX 7 to the A7r. I thought I'd see a relatively subtle improvement in image quality, ease of use, etc. I'm happy to report that the improvements are many and striking. I'm still waiting for my first FE lens and have been using my E 18 to 200mm zoom until then. The auto cropping feature (which works very well) limits the image size to about 15MP, which is still a very workable product. But, I've yet to experience the full 36 MP potential of the camera. So, my comments will be limited to factors other than image detail. The low light performance is amazing. I've taken handheld shots of outdoor Christmas lights and gotten near perfect images every time. That's because the camera, set to Auto ISO, goes up to ISO 6400, allowing shutter speeds that are practical. Colors of Christmas lights are remarkably accurate. Shadow detail is excellent. Overall, it'a a "Wow" experience. The OLED viewfinder is as good as advertized, which is, again, exceptional. Of note, the image in the viewfinder, compared to an image that has just been captured, matches precisely, in nearly all situations. As with all cameras and other devices I've used, the LCD visibility in bright light is marginal, making the bright, sharp OLED particularly welcome. The menues are much easier to use than those of the NEX. I've not set up any of the custom buttons, but don't expect any difficulty with doing so. The shutter sound is jarring, especially the first couple of times you fire the camera. I've come to use it as a reminder to hold the camera steady, not that the camera shakes (it doesn't)but that it's heavier than I'm used to and easily moved while shooting. In general, focusing is fast and accurate. Low light focusing, however, is not always reliable, but is better than the NEX. I dislike the position of the on-off switch and shutter, which are to high on the camera to match up with the alignment of the grip. I have to struggle to hold the camera tight, while using the shutter. I often spin the front dial when trying to turn off the camera. I'm probably just used to the layout of the NEX 7, where everything just falls right where my fingers do. Is this camera over twice as good as the NEX 7, as would be implied by the price? My asnswer is a resounding "YES". It is in a different league. I've given it 5 stars, though it is not "perfect" (that requirement is unrealistic for any camera). I sure am perfectly happy with it! This is a camera that I'll often leave set on Auto, with confidence that I'll get consistently great images.

Questions about this item:

Saeed A  Do it had "back focusing" function or button?
STEVE H  I am not familiar with the term "back focusing".
Richard G  I have just received my a7R. I am trying to lock the focus using the AEL button rather than pushing the shutter button halfway down. I can do that, but when I let go of the AEL button the automatic focus kicks in - it is not locked. I do not want to keep holding the AEL button (or for that matter the shutter button if I were using that method). How can I lock the focus and let go of the AEL button? Thanks.
FRED P  I do not seem to have this problem, however, I use Alpha lens with an adapter on my 7R.
Shopper  Can someone just confirm that the NEX emount lenses fit onto this body? I got a NEX-7 camera with emount lenses but would want a full frame camera.
BOGDAN S  Yes, absolutely, all E-mount lenses fit the camera. In addition the camera will detect those lenses and automatically switch to a lower crop factor that will eliminate the vignetting effect but give you a reduced resolution. Of course you can switch the crop factor off but then you get nasty images with severe vignetting effect.
