Bad First Impression

I bought this camera and I have to continually take the lens off to get the camera to read that I have one attached. What's up with that?

Excellent camera

This camera is a workhorse - it takes very high quality images and does so with minimal adjustments needed to the settings.

Great Camera, May be I got a defective piece.

Its been almost an year since I have transitioned myself from canon user to Sony, I am really happy with the product except for the fact that since I have bought there are always dust particles on the sensor . Unfortunately this was a huge defect because you dont get to see these dots on lcd (and for the price), but when u take print or view it on a large screen these dots were all over the place especially when you take HDR picture or under exposed picture. I tried talking to sony customer service and they said they would help me on this. Hopefully they will figure this out!

NFC, WIFI do not work

I purchased this product new just before the Christmas holidays and did not get to try all the features right away. By the time I got to try everything it was past the store's return period. The NFC and WIFI remote would not work. The PlayMemories Mobile would not work with the latest Android upgrade, on a Sony phone! Service advised me to send the camera in for repairs, to Whitby. Not sure why the service centre is an hour and a half away from where most customers live! As far as I am concerned, the product was defective out of the box. Why do I have to now be inconvenienced because of poor quality assurance, especially given the price of the camera? Very disappointed, especially as support can see the number of Sony products I have registered.

What todays camera should strive for

I'm glad I made the switch. This has options galore! focusing is much faster than I had expected even in low light. It takes some getting used to but with practice, I've got it down. The only negative is the menu system.

Unbelievable Quality-Super Sharp Images

On a whim I changed from a 20 year Nikon user to the Sony A7RII. My first shots blew me away. I have printed pictures as large as 24 X 40 and the detail is amazing. I am using sony's professional glass for my travels. I will never go back to a standard DSLR again.

A Great Camera

I bought this about 2 months ago and just love it and all the features. The only thing I feel that the Sony A 99ii has over this one is the automatic settings are not adjustable. Like the scene select setting. Other than that this is definitly a great camera for the value!

Overall - The Best Camera I've Owned

I decided to move to Sony's platform from shooting Nikon's D810 and I'm really glad I did. While the controls might not be quite as intuitive as my Nikon D810 and this camera definitely wouldn't work well as a weapon in a pinch, the image quality is so perfect and amazing that it's forgivable. Here are the pros and cons as I see them to owning the SonyA7rII: Pros: Amazing image quality - the best I've ever seen - and I did a lot of side by side with the D850. When dealing with high end camera's that occupy very top of the DxoMark scale, it really comes down to specific needs and personal preference. The EVF is absolutely fantastic to use. It's clear, the colors are wonderfully vibrant and true to life, and the ability to zoom in on far away objects from the viewfinder for perfect focus is a great benefit worth the extra demand on the battery. Silent mode which uses an electric front shutter is great and now (after upgrading to the latest firmware version) appears to work when uncompressed RAW is selected Though small, this camera feels solid and, with the grip, fits my large hands comfortably Though Sony doesn't have a large lens selection, the lenses they do have are insanely sharp and bar none among the best I've ever owned, particularly their Zeiss lenses and new Sony "G" lenses. To give some perspective - the best lens for Nikon ends at a 36 sharpness rating, Sony's lens lineup almost starts where Nikon leaves off and goes up to an insane 46 rating (per DxoMark). I can use this camera with ALL of my vintage glass including Nikkor AI and NAI MF lenses, Helios, Pentacon, Zeiss, and INDUSTAR, etc. All that's needed is a simple adapter and each of every one of theses lenses benefits from Sony's 5-axis in-body image stabilization. the shallow depth of the camera body ensures it's compatible with virtually every 35mm camera lens ever made - something that I ran into trouble with on my D810 because Nikon actually has the widest body of all camera makes. My M42 mount lenses (for example) would have to be mounted slightly inside of the D810 body to get the right magnification and infinite focus. And that's not even an option because doing this risks destroying the mirror. Even vintage Nikkor AI and NAI lenses can't be used without fairly major modification which also ruins the lens value. A lot of people seem to really dislike the A7 line UI. I personally kind of like the interface. Maybe it’s because I work with a lot of technology, but I find it pretty simple to use and after owning my camera for a few weeks have the placement of everything committed to my long-term memory. It also looks more modern than Nikon or Cannon’s UI. It might seem a little segmented at first, but in the end, everything kind of makes sense as a whole so I’m counting it as a pro. Love that Sony included two batteries and a charger. This really makes me feel like I bought a high-end camera. If they’d throw in a screen protector (see my grumble below), I’d be completely happy with the included accessories. Cons: The battery life could be better I'd love to see the build quality be just a bit more robust. I.e. I wouldn't take this on out in sub zero weather, do a photo-shoot in a sand storm, or bring it with me white water rafting. Even decent weather sealing would be a nice gesture. This one is probably on the top of my list - I'd love to see dedicated controls for all major settings that I use every day. I can set the aperture from the back dial and the exposure from the front dial, but it would be great to have a control for the ISO. I virtually always shoot in full manual mode and having to right click on the wheel to bring up an ISO dialogue before selecting the ISO is just the tiniest bit annoying. The camera should come with a snap on screen protector like Nikon provides. When you spend this much on a camera and don't get basic protective equipment, you feel like Sony is being a tad on the penny pinching/apathetic side. Some tips: Knowing how short the battery life would be I loaded on six batteries and bought a grip for the camera so I can use two at a time. With the grip I can shoot about half of what I used to get away with using my D810, which is workable Get a good protective carrying case/backpack for this camera to keep it safe. My final verdict: It's overall the best camera I've ever owned. While it is quirky in some way, some of the quirks are starting to grow on me. Now we'll see about longevity. The shutter is rated at 500,000 actuations (which isn't everything), but I'm hopeful.

Sony 7Rii

Recently upgraded to Alpha 7R ii from Pentax K5 II, i was amazed at overall performance of this camera. Great picture quality even in low light, how well the camera body fits in your hand, battery life could be better, still lot to learn what this camera can do. Pricey, but not disappointed with the purchase. Lens: Sony FE 2.8/24-70 GM and amazing lens

The perfect stills camera!

I mainly take landscape photos and this camera delivers and then some! The only thing I would like to see is a better touch screen and a flip out screen with enough brightness to see in daylight.

Nasty side efect under LED light.

Are you aware of this problem? Is there a solution for it? I took these photos inside a museum in Seville, Spain. It uses LED lights to illuminate the sculptures and got this nasty effect. Only there and only under that illumination. Any comments?

Best Camera I have ever owned

I have used the A7r II for about 3 months now. Its my first mirrorless camera and I love it. I chose it because I like to shoot landscapes in the back country. Its light weight, shoots great in low light, and the 5-axis steady shot performs incredible. The mirrorless sensor is amazing but because its mirrorless the sensor is so close to the lens it gets dirty easily. My only other criticism would be that it isn't the most durable camera. At the end of the day it is a dream camera for what I like to shoot which is landscapes and street photography.

The Camera with all the Excellent Features!

After reading and watching reviews online for 9 months, I finally took the plunge and bought my first A7R2. (With the 24-240 lens). I took it to DisneyWorld and tested it out in bright sun, low light, rain, fog, alligators! OK, maybe not alligators but it passed all my tests with flying colors! After that I couldn't even pick up my Nikkon D4 or Df anymore.....so I sold all of my 10 years worth of Nikon top of the line gear! It's been a year now and I've not looked back. Instead I now own just about all the Sony FE lenses and two A7R2's!

A great camera

I have had my a7rII for just over a year and I am extremely happy with it. My photographic specialty is live insect macro photography and when i do my part the camera yields excellent photos. Be aware the extremely high pixel count can extenuate motion unsharpness, so a very steady hand is necessary to get the best results.

Favorite Camera

I've been a Canon user for awhile.Ive seen the a7 series for some time now.I had the new Canon 5D Mark IV before i switched to this. Couple of reasons i switched was 1) The weight was a huge Factor. Im a Landscape,Astro and Portrait photographer. So with all the traveling I due It became such a burden.2) Biggest reason I switch was due to the fact I can switch from full frame to crop and able to put my canon lenses on this was a no brainer and I would call a win win. Amazing!

Just Short

I am a professional photographer. I am now vested in this camera after dealing with Canon and Nikon systems, medium format and view cameras. What I like about this camera is the image quality. I wish it would track and respond as quickly as both the professional Canon and Nikon cameras do. It's just short of being perfect.

Amazing!

Sony a7RII- BSI sensor architecture

Until now, back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensors could only be found on compact digital cameras, and were smaller. Their advantage? Better image quality and improved resolution in lower light. The Sony a7RII is the first 35mm-format camera to boast a BSI sensor architecture—and is the first Sony camera to offer 42.4MP resolution. Sony claims a 40% faster AF acquisition time, thanks to 399 focal plane phase detection AF points, and boasts an expandable top ISO of 102,400.

When Sony first announced the a7 series of mirrorless interchangeable lens system cameras, the concept of a full-frame camera in a more compact body was a pipe dream. The a7 series was a first in the world. Now Sony has once again created a world first – the Sony a7R II is equipped with the world’s first back-illuminated full-frame sensor pushing a whopping 42.4 megapixels.

The Sony a7R II is packed with the latest technological advancements from Sony; it’s more than just about packing megapixels onto a camera, Sony’s new Exmor R CMOS sensor is the world’s first full-frame sensor that incorporates a back-illuminated architecture that combines a gapless on-chip lens design and anti-reflective coating. The wiring layer upgrades the typical aluminum wiring design with copper wiring for faster transmission speed. All this amounts to some truly remarkable and incredibly detailed 42.4 megapixel stills and 4K movies incredible low-noise performance even at ISO 102,400.

Sensor advances

Sony claims the a7R II’s sensor will dramatically improve light collection thanks to the sensor’s new structure and material, with what they say is remarkable low noise performance that allows for incredibly detailed stills and 4K video with very little noise and a wide dynamic range that they say is superior to previous models. Low-light performance is further improved by the 5-axis in-body image stabilization system, which is fine-tuned for the larger, high-res sensor and compensates for vertical, horizontal, pitch, yaw, and roll.

The 42.4 MP sensor combines gapless on-chip lens design and AR (anti-reflective) coating on the surface of the sensor’s glass seal to dramatically improve light collection efficiency, resulting in high sensitivity with low-noise performance and wide dynamic range. This allows the camera to shoot at an impressive ISO range of 100 to 25600 that is expandable to ISO 50 to 102400. Sony claims image data will clear the buffer 3.5x faster than the original a7R.

Video Star

The camera is the world’s first to offer 4K movie recording in full-frame format, and its architecture offers direct pixel readout and no line skipping. The bottom line? Cleaner, more dramatic 4K video, with higher resolution and less moire and jaggies than typical 4K movies.
The camera utilizes the advanced XAVC S7 codec during video shooting, which records at a high bit rate of 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting. The camera offers a variety of functions to support a professional video workflow including Picture Profile, S-Log2 Gamma and S-Gamut, 120fps high frame rate movie shooting in HD (720p), time code, and clean HDMI output.

Focus Phenom

With 399 focal plane phase detection points covering 45% of the image area, the a7R II is said to raise the bar for speed and accuracy for autofocus performance in a full-frame digital camera. The camera can capture up to 5fps in burst mode, a remarkable achievement given its high resolution. Additionally, the focal plane phase-detection AF system on the α7R II works well with Sony A-mount lenses via the LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 mount adapter. This is the first time that the AF system of a mirrorless camera can achieve high performance with lenses originally designed for DSLRs, according to Sony.

Clear View

The a7R II’s 2.4 million dot electronic viewfinder offers the world’s highest EVF magnification, at 0.78x, and a special coating has been applied to reduce reflections. For videographers, Sony has also announced a new LCD monitor, model CLM-FHD5, which offers 1920x1080p resolution, and features enlarging and peaking functionality, false color and video level marker.

5-axis image stabilization system

Fine-tuned for high-resolution sensors and accurately compensates for blur caused by camera shake. The 5-axis system can compensate for camera shake vertically, horizontally, pitch, yaw, and roll as opposed to the previous version’s two-directional stabilization. The Sony a7 RII 5-axis stabilization is so advanced that it can even compensate for blur caused by the camera operator’s movement – even if they’re running.

4K-movie recording to internal media

The world’s first camera to offer 4K-movie recording to internal media in a full-frame sensor. Shoot 4K in the super 35mm format with full pixel readout and no line skipping or pixel binning, resulting in images with higher resolution and less jagging. Keeping in line with the professional workflow needed for high quality video production, the Sony a7RII includes high bit-rate 4K recording to the XAVC S format, S-Log gamma, and time code/user bit for easy editing and synching with multiple camera setups.

Auto-focusing technologies

A fast hybrid AF system with a densely packed 399 focal plane phase-detection AF points that delivers tack-sharp images both in stills and movie modes. The Sony a7RII is moisture and dust resistant with improved sealing of the dials, buttons and a double-layered structure that tightly interlocks panels and components. It may not be waterproof but it’s definitely tough enough to handle most situations.

Plenty of Options

For the studio set the Sony a7R II offers plenty of capture and transfer options including the ability to tether your camera to a PC for remote capture and instant upload. An added benefit is the ability to even charge via USB cable – extending the battery life for those marathon studio sessions.

The Sony a7R II continues to push the envelope and deliver the tools needed to create captivating images, superb high-resolution 4K video all in one compact system. The Sony a7 series continues to set the bar for what photographers and videographers should expect from a full-frame camera system – all of the benefits of a large sensor and none of the compromises.
