Sony DSC-HX100V Features

  • Carl Zeiss Vario-SonarT Lens with 27mm equivalent wide angle lens and 30x Optical Zoom: The Lens with 30x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for video recording as well as for outdoor, sports and travel photos and Close Focus shoots close-ups within a 1/2" of the subject
  • Backlight Correction HDR: Don't miss a single detail in high contrast shots. The built in backlight correction analyzes the image and automatically adjusts accordingly to give you a perfectly lit shot
  • High resolution iSweep Panorama mode: With high resolution iSweep Panorama mode just press the shutter, pan the landscape and let the camera do the rest. It automatically links together each frame to produce a high resolution panoramic image providing the ability to zoom in on small details
  • Digital Zoom: Capturing the right shot at the right moment has never been so easy. Digital zoom brings the action up close to get that perfect shot, every time
  • Natural Flash: Conventional point-and-shoot camera flash shots just don't capture colors the way the eye sees them. Natural Flash mode takes a reference shot without flash and then uses that reference to correct the color, for far more lifelike images
  • Face Detection technology: Sony's Face Detection technology can automatically distinguish between children and adults. Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts flash, focus, exposure and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends
  • Sweep Multi Angle mode: In Sweep Multi Angle mode, the camera takes 15 images at different angles as it sweeps across the scene. By tilting the camera during playback, the camera's Gyro Sensor detects motion and displays the image in a 3D-like view on the camera's LCD
  • Includes Sony PMB (Picture Motion Browser) Software ver. 5.5: Sony Picture Motion Browser software offers a simple, intuitive way to transfer, sort and view your video and still images on your compatible PC
  • 3.0" XtraFine LCD: 3.0" XtraFine LCD with TruBlack technology gives you deeper blacks and more color in your display, all while being thinner than most LCDs
  • Hi-speed Linear Focus: Life moves fast, your camera's focus needs to move just as fast. The Hi-speed linear focus achieves dramatically clearer images with an auto focus that moves just as fast as your life
  • Background Defocus: DSLR photographs are often beautiful because they blur the background, putting the emphasis on the subject. Now point-and-shoot cameras can deliver this signature DSLR benefit
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization: Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality
  • HDMI output: The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams
  • Motion Detection: Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces
  • Includes Sony PMB Portable software: With the pre-installed Picture Motion Browser (PMB) Portable software the DSC-HX100V makes it easy to pre-select videos and images in the camera and conveniently upload them from the camera to a compatible PC and popular Internet sharing sites
  • Full HD 1080/60p: Record crystal clear movies at the highest resolution available with capabilities for 60p in 1080 Full HD. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your Blu-ray Disc players, Sony PlayStation3 systems and compatible PCs and HDTVs
  • 3D still images: Produce awe-inspiring images with 3D still image and 3D Sweep Panorama capabilities. Images will take on a new dimension of creative capabilities for viewing the world in a whole new way
  • Superior Auto mode: Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots
  • Soft Skin mode: Portrait subjects will love the results. Soft Skin mode recognizes skin tones and reduces the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles without affecting the rest of the shot
  • Smile Shutter technology: Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest
  • Anti-blink Function: It's frustrating to capture the perfect shot, only to review it later and discover subjects blinked during the photo. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking
  • TransferJet technology: TransferJet technology, developed by Sony and advanced and promoted by a consortium of 18 other companies, allows you to transfer up to ten files between two TransferJet enabled devices just by touching their TransferJet logos together

I just got back from a two-week trip in Europe with my new Sony DSC-HX100V Camera and wanted to add my feedback to help others and thank everyone who helped me choose this camera. In summary, this is a fantastic camera and was a pleasure to use. It is a large step up from my older version from Sony. I took more than 6,000 photographs in two weeks. and put the camera through about every test that it could have. In more detail, here are the key aspects and my two cents on them. Overall Camera Performance: This camera is a work horse and had many features that made it a dream to work with and a couple that are major issues in my opinion (which I will cover later). I used the Superior Auto automatic feature almost exclusively with the hand dial located near the shutter release I quickly tweaked the EV levels when necessary. It also does this for you automatically by taking three bracketed photographs. I chose to have the instant control which worked very well for me. The battery life was very good. I had three batteries which lasted longer than I anticipated. I would charge them daily which more than met my needs. Only once did I run out of batteries and used my new Sony DSC-H70 at that time. I actually switched between cameras depending if I needed a really wide angle or wanted to be less obvious. Picture Quality: Picture quality was outstanding even at the longer focus distances. What an incredible range of framing options with the 30x Zoom. In many cases, since I was shooting at the highest 16M size I simply made minor edits in the camera after the shot. I was totally amazed at the picture quality at all ranges day and night. Even though I took a monopod, I never used it. All photographs were either hand held or I found a natural tripod at night to add some minor stability. I was more than impressed with the picture quality and so were the people I was traveling with. At the far end of the zoom it can be difficult to get a 100 percent steady shot. I used whatever I could find to heal steady the camera. Ease of Use: This is a very easy camera to use. Most things are well placed and there are great features. It is lightweight, very user-friendly and was a joy to use. The weight is well distributed and makes it an easy camera to keep with you at all times. I just enjoyed using this camera and it just got easier. Two Major Flaws: Again, this is my opinion, but I found two flaws in the camera design that impacted my work with the camera. First and most important, this camera will allow you to delete an entire days worth of photographs without asking you if you are sure you want to do this. Click and they are gone! Paris at night...gone. I went back out until 5:00 a.m. to re-shoot. Before the trip, my son deleted some photographs and I was furious - not at him but that it could have happened. And then I did it. I was tired and looking at photographs and deleting some and then a day's worth were gone. This is a huge flaw and I would by no means let it stop you from getting the camera. I ended up manually protecting all of my photographs before I would look at them. Just be careful. Second, is that I kept turning on the movie function which is a small button located in the wrong place for me apparently! I missed a few shots stopping the movie. Very Highly Recommended: I would highly recommend this camera. This trip and this camera were both dreams come true for me. Watch the delete button and you should be very happy.

Amazing camera, but....

I really liked this camera, loved it, until i realized there is no way to turn off the auto preview. I've already missed a lot of good pictures because of this. I sold a Hx1 and buy a Hx100V, sorry but i just can't understand why sony would removed this feature for this camera. It's definitely a step back, now I really miss my Hx1.

perfect for what I needed

By

from Albany, NY  -  Casual Photographer

I purhcased this last minute for a trip. I have outgrown my slim cybershot but not quite ready for the big leagues. Took it to my stepdaughters choir recital, was able to take video of her like I was sitting right in front of her!! photos have been amazing adn very easy to take. If you want high quality photos and don't know what you are doing...thsiis your camer! I chose this particular model mainly for the Zeiss lens, figured 16.2mp is really as good as 18mp.

Exceptional Camera

By

from Alameda, CA  -  Semi-pro Photographer

I learned to do photos and videos over the last 8 years, seriously doing shooting and editing for the last 3 years. I own and use 4 Sony camera/camcorders. (DSC-HX100, HDR-HC9, HDR-TG1 and MHS-CM5) This is the BEST from Sony. Right out of the box, or after learning to use the many features, the HX100 gives consistently superb photos and videos. I bought this one for the 30X optical zoom, the 60p field/frame rate and the excellent low-light image quality. I'm not disappointed with any of these features. I was blown away by the panoramic sweep-stitch together photo feature. As with all new cameras there are some adjustments in shooting and editing. Playing and editing AVCHD at 1920 X 1080 (28 Mbps) and 60p requires some changes for my computer, editing software and monitors. I shoot a lot of tripod, wildlife, outdoors at sunrise and sunset. This camera gives excellent results in all lighting conditions and at fast or slow pan rates. No more 'combing,' 'tearing,' or 'double sets of wings' on birds in flight. The only two additional things I would want from this camera? A remote input to trigger the shutter/video record operations. And, a user manual (it comes with one) that has an INDEX. At 300 pages the user manual is only searchable when viewed on a computer. You can print the manual out, but have to create your own index (page number for looking up a specific feature or operation). The attached photo (first from this camera) was taken right out of the box, no manual settings, just a hand-held, point-and-shoot (after sunset!). Great price from Adorama.

Great Camera

By

from Brandon, MS  -  Photo Enthusiast

I love the zoom lens; very effective for wildlife photos. Took great pics of hummingbirds this summer and use shutter priority to stop the action - worked great. I own a Sony a580 and wanted a good compact superzoom as a grab-and-go camera. It is excellent for times I don't want to lug around the DSLR. I love Sony cameras. I have owned a a300, and HX1. Loved them both but wanted more MPs for enlarging photos and cropping.

I had to have this camera.

By

from Newport, Oregon  -  Casual Photographer

I wanted a camera that was easy to use but took great pictures, I use it to take wildlife pictures around our house, the shutter is very fast and the zoom and lens focus are great. I wish it was a little smaller but I will get used to it-I was using a smaller camera before.

Good for event lighting

By

from San Diego  -  Casual Photographer

I bought this camera mostly for work (event lighting). The picture quality is really good with very low level light. It also did fairly well with the extreme color saturation from my lights, the recorded images were similar to what the eye would see. I have not yet tested this camera with LED sources. I have not learned how to change all of the settings to see what works the best, but the auto settings work well as is.

Review of DSC-Hx100V compare to Older's

By

from Calexico, Ca  -  Casual Photographer

This is a change made to DSC-H9 on which have few experiences on high speed shoots and need a change. So I look for a faster shooter and found on the same budget range than my previous buy this one. Considered to be great in speed compared to other digitals without being an SLR you will feel like. I don't have any longer to control the flash so you will have only automatic and no flash, which I consider a reverse, but their intelligent mode looks like works at least in my first shoots. Thank you.

Great Camera for the money!

By

The camera is great, feels good, looks good and performs very good. Much better pictures than compact point and clicks but much more user friendly than DSLR's. We love the rechargeable battery and large, pivoting LCD screen.

Questions & Answers Powered by TurnTo®

Questions about this item:

Glen W  What is a histogram and what does it do in a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100 camera? How do you get it not to show on the LCD screen? It shows on the screen and we do not want it to show.
STEPHEN L  The Histogram is a graph that indicates the exposure of an image. If the bars are primarily to the left, your picture will be dim; if they are more on the far right, it will be very bright. Keeping the bars in relative balance assures a good exposue. Turn the feature on by clicking the DISP button and choose "Detailed Info." To turn it off, use the DISP again, and select either setting EXCEPT "Detailed Info."
Glen W  Thank you, Stephen. I do appreciate your taking the time to answer my question. I thought maybe I could get rid of the Histogram only and keep the other info on the LCD screen. However, it seems like it is an everything including histogram or nothing, right? In view of the very good explanation you gave, it may be a good thing to keep on the screen.
Shopper  is this camera new?
JUNE L  The camera I purchased is new. Now it is even cheaper that the price I paid for about a month ago.
Mariam M  What type of batteries?
MARC K  It has its own proprietary battery that charges while in the camera when plugged in with supplied charger. NP-FH50 is model on battery (lithium rechargeable)
