Questions & Answers

Shopper : Does it come together with the memory card or it does not need a memory card?PETER W : I did not get the NEX 5N. but rather settled for the A 35. But whatever the camera, a good memory card is absolutely necessary. The question is what you wish to do. For stills, you will need at least a 4GB card. If you do continuous shooting or movies, I would start with an 8Gb card, and more likely get a 16 GB card. They all should be a minimum of class 6, and for movies at least class 10. The NEX should work well with that. My change to the A35 was occasioned by a number of lenses in my posession already and not needing to buy them new that way. But my next camera is going to be one of the NEX series. It is the lesser weight and also the compactness that I am looking for. A point: the memory cards I have are all purchases. Sometimes there may be a deal and it includes a usable starter. You will have to ask.wayne l : It does not come with a memory card, you must buy one.DAVE K : No memory card from Sony. And you definitely need one, a fast, decent one I might add. But look for Adorama's bundle/kit offers. That is what I did - memory card and a Lowepro bag for not much more money.JOHN W : Yes, it needs a memory card; and no, it did not come with one.BORIS S : I believe the basic kit does not come with a memory card. The package I bought from Adorama though included an 8 GB card, as well as a camera bag.HAL H : Mine did come with card. This is one of the best compact cameras on the market. It takes photos almost equal to my canon mk ll and my 7 D.TAMAS D : You need to buy a memory card. The camera itself doesn't come with it, but most vendors sell SD cards separately. Adorama is selling a bundle, a kit that includes a card and a case. If you don't see the card explicitly listed, it doesn't have one.GREG K : It needs a memory card. Go for a 8 or 16 GB card that is rated Class 10 or better. If you plan to shoot some video, go for at least 16GB.YUNJIA C : No. You will need to purchase a memory card separately. It takes SD cards. Tandy H : Hello, Yes, it will need a memory card. I suggest a 16-32g Class 10 SD card..Hope this helps!!
E S : I read in other websites that the box includes an external flash. In Adorama under "What's included", there's no mention of it. So, is there one in the box?DOUGLAS B : Yes, flash was included with the kit.WILLIAM C : Yes. There is a small, minimally articulating flash with the kit. It was a surprise to me, too, not having seen it on the packaging. It's servicable but tends to wash out scenes and causes red eye like smaller point and shoots with built ins. For several situations I've cut a small strip of white construction paper to tape lightly over the flash to soften the effect. It works well but doesn't really travel well. A miniature diffuser would help. Alternatively, Somy offers a larger add on articulating flash (think mini speed light) for around $250. And it has a diffuser add on. Might be worth the money as the NEX defaults to very high ISO in even the slightest low light situations if you stay in auto mode.CHENG B : It is includedGARET W : Yes, there is an external flash included in the box.
Shopper : Did it have famous clicking issue?Hari N : I just backordered Sony Nex5N for Adorama..Can I safely assume the camera will come with the latest firmware upgrade or any other fixes?...Please advise..Much appreciated.....Thanks...Hari....CHRISTOPHER L : No clicking noise.JOHN W : No it did not. I preordered my camera and got it the week it came out. I was worried since I had read about the issue. I contacted Adorama and they said I could return it under their return policy. I never did have the issue and use the camera all of the time. I love it by the way.SCOTT C : I did notice some clicking, but only on a small percentage of some clips. However, the way I shoot (I only keep a few) it has not really been "an issue" as of yet using the camera for a month or so.GARET W : No. From what I read, the clicking issue is only apparent if you take video and shake it around like it's a salt shaker.ETHAN A : Yes it did when I first bought it, but sony fixed the problem pretty quickly and it shouldn't be an issue anymore.

Great lightweight camera

I have only used the camera twice in daylight settings and am still getting used to it. I traded in a Canon T1i. So far the picture quality is great with the standard 18-55 lens. Easy camera to learn, and tons of great features. The screen tilt is limited and seems pretty useless. The camera does not come with a strap.

So-So

This item does not fit my NEX 5N as well as I had hoped it would. It just makes the camera heavier and bulkier. Not worth the money.

Fantastic Surprise

I own two top Nikon DSLRs, the Nikon D7000 & D800. The NEX-5N competes on an equal basis with the D7000 and admirably up against the D800 if large prints are not your goal. Really sharp photos can be had easily with this camera. I love its light weight & VR. I highly recommend this camera.

Easy to use and High quality

Easy to use as a point and shoot camera right out of the box. Auto mode rarely lets you down on picking the best settings, but if you want to tweak some settings, thats easy too after a bit. Battery life is good, video is unreal for a camera. Have had other mirrored DSLR's. This camera beats them and is half the size. The 18-55 lens works just fine for family functions and sports, but if you like to take pictures from afar you'll have to get a more powerful lens. Sensor is HUGE! captures lots of detail.

Remarkable Camera

The high ISO performance is outstanding, especially in this price range. The 10 eps is almost comical it's so fast and it works flawlessly... one RAW/on Jpeg at 10 eps! Fastest shooting camera I've ever had! I had the 3c version but the 5n is so much better it's hard to talk about it! I have the Sony 18-200mm zoom and I just don't ever take it off... I did order a lens adapter for Canon lenses so I will play with that a little... I have several very wide angle lenses I'd like to try with the 5n and see how it works! All in all, one of the best and most fun cameras I've acquired in years! Build quality is excellent and I haven't had any problems at all with it, in any manner. It's fast, works as promised, and delivers outstanding image quality.

Great walk around camera

This is a Good camera, not great. Not because of the picture quality, but because menu's are not laid out in a intuitive manor. The best way around this is to program the two favorite buttons although there is only two. Although there is only two it's better than not having the programmable buttons. Once you start to get use to where the options are it gets a little easier. Just a gripe on Sony's lay out. Battery life on the camera is average roughly getting about 200 shots before you have to recharge. Now on to the good of the camera. The size of the camera is very impressive. To be able to fit the AP-C chip into the body. Although I'm a Nikon person at heart. I have to say that picture comparison between the two are very close. Giving the edge to Nikon, but keeping in mind that I'm comparing a 300 dollar lens to a 1200 dollar lens. Focusing on the Sony is very quick meaning mili seconds. I have tested some ¾ cameras and the focusing on those seam to be a bit slower. Two very neat options on this camera is HDR ( Takes three photos and compares than pieces the three photos into one ) and DMF ( Fine focusing ). Although this is not the smallest camera out there. It is very small not pocket able, but for travel this would be a great choice. If you are coming from the compact world and looking to upgrade this camera is highly recommended. If you're a from the DLSR world you may want to think about what or why your consisting this camera for. If your looking for an semi automatic camera secondary maybe back up ( not really ) look at the Olympus EPL 3 or the New Panasonic GX1, Fuji x-pro1. I bought this camera for a walk around camera with a little flexibility , size, weight, and it's a , AP-C Sensor. Youtube is a great source of information.

A remarkably good little camera!

The NEX-5N is a truly remarkable little camera. Beautifully built (very solid, great fit and finish) Fantastic screen and incredibly sharp picture quality (IQ) Brilliant low-light capability But, for me, the very BEST feature, is it's almost purpose-designed ability to use the many, many, fantastic manual-focus lenses from legacy mounts such as Leica M-mount, Leica R-mount, Leica Screw-mount, etc. This camera is STUPENDOUSLY good for manual focusing with these lenses (Leica/Leitz, Voigtlander, Zeiss, etc). The manual focus capabilities are special due to the built-in multi-level zoom capability when focussing (similar to "Live View on DSLR but much, much quicker, easier to use due to multi-zoom levels, touch-screen selected focus areas, and, especially, the excellent "focus-peaking" feature where hard edges are highlighted in color when correctly focused. Additionally, all of the key shooting parameters (Shutter speed, ISO, WB, Metering, etc) are configurable to be selected from the main dial. This is so much faster and easier than even my Canon 5D, it's amazing! I spent a lot of time comparing image and sharpness using the same target subjects with various focal lengths between this little NEX-5N and three legacy lenses (Voigtlander 15MM, Voigtlander 28MM and Leitz 70-210MM zoom) against my Canon 5D with Canon 17-40mm L and Canon 100-400mm L lenses), and the little Nex-5N absolutely DOMINATES the Canon for sharpness, IQ, clarity and micro-contrast. Obviously, the NEX-5N cannot compare to a modern DSLR for AF speed and so for fast moving targets, it's not as good. But, I took all my Canon gear and my NEX gear to South Africa for a 2-week vacation recently, and never used the Canon ONCE! The NEX did it all....travel pictures, landscapes, wildlife, etc.

Poor measurement for the NEX-5N

Sony NEEDS to re measure the this product and remodel it so that it would fix the NEX camer BETTER!. Installing the cover was easy but I have realized that this cover does not fit perfectly to protect all components. Especially the Left side of NEX Camera has a metal part pushes the cover so that it cannot come in to contact with body of the camera. This product had poor measurement and poor product development to start with!

A decent product...but

Not much in the way of assortments so ordered it along with the great camera. One annoying feature is that it is not form fitted on the sides as the camera's built in strap loops leave a space despite the attempt to indent the interior of the case. As it is, the tripod screw is the only anchor that must be trusted, but it's tightly screwed on. I purchased another one I found online with this feature so will see if it is more form fitted. Also, I see snap buttons on the bottom so assume that there is another piece to this product (?)

Great travel camera

After weeks waiting for the NEX-7n release date to be announced, I decided that the NEX-5n with its stellar reviews would be a great addition to my equipment set. I also own a Canon 60D and Canon 5D Mark 2 but both are bulky to travel with. With two days under my belt with the NEX-5n, it has been a pleasure to shoot with. Yes, the menus can be somewhat odd to navigate and you discover that some of the options don't exist with others (HDR with JPEG+RAW for example) but bear in mind, the average knowledgable user can take it out of the box, charge the battery and shoot. I do like the small compact flash it comes with. I also don't find the omission of a viewfinder that much of an issue (one of the reasons I was going to wait for the 7). Tilt screen is a pleasure to use. Lens correction profiles already exist in Lightroom so I'm a very happy camper. Will I give up my 5D? Perhaps. But only for the next 5D, whatever that might look like. Meanwhile, the NEX-5n will be by my side more of the time. My only regret is virtually no one has the 16mm lens which I may spring for in the future (would have to see how much wider it really is). Waiting for the package to become available (you save $100) was not an option. I will also be interested to see how the macro lens performs. With the 5D and the 100mm macro, it's a high bar to hit but already I think the Sony might do very well.

Great camera

Great little camera and the image quality is better than any of the other mirrorless cameras I have tried. Close to and better in some ways than my E5.

Mirrorless Wonder

I use the camera for mostly family, vacations, and scenery. Ultra small (especially coming from using an Olympus E-30). It is very convenient to carry and use. The video is phenomenal and with the touch focus, photos are great. I enjoy the build quality of my E-30 a little better but I can see that Sony has a superb grasp of what a prosumer tweener camera should be. At this price, I do not think one could find a better fit between an SLR and a point and shoot.

BEST CAMERA UNDER $1000!

I traded the already great NEX5 for the newer NEX 5N, and it was TOTALLY WORTH IT! the added controls like manual video, and touch screen add a whole new layer of usability. What was already a great camera just got better!
