Or you can get a knock-off from ebay.WEMC Hennessy L : Hi Ramaamurthy, I can help your question and it is yes to do external charger and that would be more great, you can also charge by using micro USB cable (if you lazy to pull the battery out or on a long trip that you need to charge external battery) So I personaly own NEX-5R and NEX-7 I love both of them and they are great, the NEX-7 is for me to take a detail picture and fast response and the NEX 5R is great. For the 5R is also perfect I can do daily taking pictures and I love the 5R because it got 1 of the dial from tri-navi NEX-7, so I can do a quick setting and also wifi feature which you probably already know it can add more feature and wireless controller with smartphone, 5R is great for hang out with the 180 till screen do self shot and touch screen with it. Now I would like to point the disadvantage of the 5R is there won't be a viewfinder which that a add on you have to buy separate. Now is the part that u will need to think, what level photography are you at right now. 5R would be great for beginners and medium photography If u care about viewfinder than you could buy add on part which it would be 230$ for viewfinder now at amazon and it will be annoying for till screen for self portrait, another option is NEX-6 would be same as 5R but it will be and it better because it have 2 level dial and OLED viewfinder build in and a hot shoe for external stuff, but it will not have 180 till screen for self portrait. For me here how's it work in NEX line NEX 3N, F3 is beginners NEX 5R is for medium Photographer which have 2 price is 499 $ body only and 599 $ with 18-55mm lens but I would recommend get to pack 5R with 16-50mm electronic zoom which it could do a wide angle shot and phase shift detection, add for 230 $ or 300 $ for OLED viewfinder. NEX-6 is for semi Pro photographer Also have 2 price 699 $ body only and 799 $ with 16-50mm lens kit NEX-7 is for Pro photographer If u have any question ask me :)STEVEN P : Yes, and it's highly recommended -- I have found that charging the camera through the USB port is slow and unreliable, particularly if you try to charge it with the USB port of a laptop computer. I'd recommend getting Sony's own charger, which is more robust and reliable than 3rd party brands.ROBERT P : Yes it is safe. I bought extra batteries and charger from third party manufacture, and have been using them regularly. Any third party brand should work fine. Sony's 5-series NEX compact interchangeable lens cameras boast a new addition, the NEX-5R. Inheriting the same high-quality imaging and ease-of-use of which the Series is renowned, the NEX-5R builds on these strengths. It is the first E-mount camera with Fast Hybrid AF, which includes phase-detection AF to deliver highly responsive, DSLR-like AF tracking for shooting up to 10 fps.
